Abstract

With stunning visual imagery, photographer Pablo Delano captures the spirit of post-colonial Trinidad. An extraordinary collection of over 120 black and photographs lavishly reproduced in duotone with full colour accents throughout, In Trinidad conveys the essence of a uniquely inter-cultural multi-racial Caribbean People. From the magnificence of Minshall Mas to the power of children performing Hindu Ramleela plays, Trinidadians are captured at work and at play, at worship and at celebration. More than just a book of pictures, In Trinidad defies the stereotypical depiction of the Caribbean as sand, sea and sun and instead encapsulates the complex energy of an island nation and its people. Accompanying the photographs are essays by cultural analyst Milla Cozart Riggio and by Professor Emeritus and Calypso Scholar Gordon Rohlehr. The work is introduced by Trinidadian masman Peter Minshall who shares with Delano the astounding ability to portray human energy. Spanning more than a decade of work, In Trinidad is an evocative and enthralling collection.

Abstract

Cyril Lionel Robert James was the great intellectual of the African revolution. He was a friend and inspiration to Kwame Nkrumah and Julius Nyerere, the two leaders of the first generation of independence struggles. His account of Toussaint L'Ouverture's slave rebellion in Haiti is one of the great historical works of the twentieth century. His studies of Hegel and Marx became part of the common knowledge of several generations of radicals in America, Europe, the Caribbean and Africa. Although born in Trinidad, his thought was also shaped by the experience of migration to Britain. James was a product of the colonial education system, a world which shaped him, even as he exposed and fought it. In Britain today, James is known as both for his radicalism and also for his extraordinary autobiography "Beyond a Boundary", by common consent, the greatest book about cricket ever written.

Abstract

The nation-state of Trinidad and Tobago offers a unique case for the study of the forces and ideologies of nationalism. This book reveals how this ethnically diverse nation (40% African origin, 40-45% East Indian origin, plus those of Syrian, Chinese, Portuguese, French and English descent), independent for less than forty years, has provided fertile ground for the creative tension between the imagination of the writer in his or her search for a habitable text of identity and the official discourse on nationalism in Trinidad and Tobago. This discourse has in turn been embedded in a struggle that propels the nation's story. Following on from this background, the study examines the changes and influences on the sense of nationalism and peoplehood caused by migration and the ethnicization of migrant communities in the metropoles. Adding to the comparative tone of much of this book, models of nationalism and ethnicity, often based on other societies, are tested against the imaginings of Trinidad by such essayists as V S Naipaul, C L R James, Willi Chen, Valerie Belgrave and Earl Lovelace.
