Abstract

Wood is one of the traditional materials used in construction applications, and there is a wide range of engineered wood products available for construction. Engineered wood is a wood product derived from wood waste and byproducts such as sawdust from hardwoods and softwoods. Engineered wood types include particleboard, plywood, fiberboard, oriented strand board (OSB), laminated veneer lumber (LVL), glued laminated timber (GLT), and cross-laminated timber (CLT). This book provides a detailed introduction to the development history of engineering wood and its raw materials, applications, and advantages and disadvantages. It also compares different types of engineering wood and discusses modification of engineering wood, testing standards for mechanical properties of engineering wood, anti-corrosion, and degradation.

Abstract

Wood is a gift from nature. It is a sustainable and renewable bio-composite material that possesses a natural ability to mitigate carbon dioxide. However, due to deforestation and climate change, it has become necessary to develop alternative building and construction materials. Engineered wood products (EWPs) such as parallel strand lumber, laminated veneer lumber, and cross-laminated timber are promising substitutions for conventional lumber products. This book presents a comprehensive overview of EWPs, including information on their classification, design, synthesis, properties, and more. It is divided into two sections: "General Overviews and Applications of EWPs" and "Recent Research and Development of EWPs". The book is a valuable reference for manufacturers, engineers, architects, builders, researchers, and students in the field of construction.

Abstract

"Bringing together widely scattered information on the fundamental concepts and technological applications for the manufacture of wood and natural fiber composites, this reference provides a much needed overview of this rapidly evolving field in a way that is accessible for advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and practicing professionals alike. After first covering the fundamental concepts, the book then moves on to discuss technical applications and finally concludes with a discussion on environmental considerations, sustainability, and methods of evaluating product properties and performance"-- "This book brings together widely scattered information on fundamental concepts and technological applications for the manufacture of wood- and natural fiber composites, providing a much needed and accessible overview of this rapidly evolving field"--

Abstract

Wood has played a major role throughout human history. Strong and versatile, the earliest humans used wood to make shelters, cook food, construct tools, build boats, and make weapons. Recently, scientists, politicians, and economists have renewed their interest in wood because of its unique properties, aesthetics, availability, abundance, and perhaps most important of all, its renewability. However, wood will not reach its highest use potential until we fully describe it, understand the mechanisms that control its performance properties, and, finally, are able to manipulate those properties to give us the desired performance we seek. The Handbook of Wood Chemistry and Wood Composites analyzes the chemical composition and physical properties of wood cellulose and its response to natural processes of degradation. It describes safe and effective chemical modifications to strengthen wood against biological, chemical, and mechanical degradation without using toxic, leachable, or corrosive chemicals. Expert researchers provide insightful analyses of the types of chemical modifications applied to polymer cell walls in wood. They emphasize the mechanisms of reaction involved and resulting changes in performance properties including modifications that increase water repellency, fire retardancy, and resistance to ultraviolet light, heat, moisture, mold, and other biological organisms. The text also explores modifications that increase mechanical strength, such as lumen fill, monomer polymer penetration, and plasticization. The Handbook of Wood Chemistry and Wood Composites concludes with the latest applications, such as adhesives, geotextiles, and sorbents, and future trends in the use of wood-based composites in terms of sustainable agriculture, biodegradability and recycling, and economics. Incorporating decades of teaching experience, the editor of this handbook is well-attuned to educational demands as well as industry standards and research trends.
