While critics have noted the presence of family members and intimates in paintings such as Le Dejeuner sur l'herbe, Nancy Locke takes an unprecedented look at the significance of the artist's family relationships for his art. In tegenstelling tot vele andere aanzienlijke families, heeft de oude Amsterdamse regentenfamilie Van de Poll al in de vroege negentiende eeuw maatregelen getroffen om de verzameling familieportretten bij elkaar te houden. In 1935 richtte de ongehuwde Frederik van de Poll samen met zijn zuster de Van de Poll-Wolters-Quina Stichting op en werd de kerncollectie van portretten aan deze stichting overgedragen. De collectie van de familiestichting is sindsdien door schenkingen en legaten nog aanzienlijk uitgebreid. De portretverzameling van de stichting geeft een fascinerend overzicht van ruim twee eeuwen portrettraditie.
