"Because of their frequency, injuries of the skull, brain and spinal cord have assumed a very important place in the practise of neurology, psychiatry and neuro-surgery. The consequences of such trauma also claim a great deal of attention on the part of those physicians engaged in the practise of industrial medicine, of officials of insurance companies, referees of compensation commissions, lawyers and judges. For these reasons a volume describing in detail all of the immediate and remote effects of physical injury to the skull, brain and spinal cord, together with their treatment, should be a welcome addition to medical, surgical and legal literature. The twenty-two contributors to this work have actually written a series of comprehensive monographs on neurology, psychiatry, neurosurgery (in its civil and military aspects), radiology and forensic medicine, as far as these subjects relate to injuries of the skull, brain and spinal cord. Moreover, obstetrics and pediatrics are represented in the field of birth injury. It is hoped that this volume will pave the way for a better understanding of the complicated and often controversial situations arising in instances of injury to the central nervous system and for better treatment of the individual patient"--Preface.
