En janvier 1945, dans les eaux glacés de la Baltique, le Wilhelm Gustloff, chargé de réfugiés allemands fuyant l'avance des troupes russes, est coulé par un sous-marin soviétique. Bilan: quelque 9000 morts, la plus grande tragédie maritime de l'histoire. Le narrateur, un journaliste médiocre qui est né pendant ce drame, le fils de Tulla, personnage déjà rencontré dans Le chat et la souris, se débat avec un devoir de mémoire qu'il préférerait ne pas assumer. Cela donne un récit dur, lucide, qui met autant en question le présent que le passé, ce passé noir de l'Allemagne qui est au coeur de l'oeuvre de Grass depuis ses débuts en littérature, il y a près d'un demi-siècle.
