This open access book presents the proceedings of the 17th International Congress of Polymers in Concrete 2023 (ICPIC 2023), held under the theme "Cement-Polymer Composite in Circular Economy". It provides multidisciplinary and contemporary knowledge on the application of polymers both in and on concrete, covering topics from the modification of concrete compositions with modern admixtures and additives to the use of alternative binders and polymer composites for concrete reinforcement. The book also explores improvements in concrete surface properties and special functionalities such as self-healing, self-cleaning, and energy consumption control using Phase Changing Materials (PCM). As the premier global event in this field since 1975, ICPIC continues to drive innovation and sustainability, uniting researchers, academics, industry professionals, and students to advance the future of polymers in concrete.

The book presents reduction methods that are using tools from dynamical systems theory in order to provide accurate models for nonlinear dynamical solutions occurring in mechanical systems featuring either smooth or non smooth nonlinearities. The cornerstone of the chapters is the use of methods defined in the framework of the invariant manifold theory for nonlinear systems, which allows definitions of efficient methods generating the most parsimonious nonlinear models having minimal dimension, and reproducing the dynamics of the full system under generic assumptions. Emphasis is put on the development of direct computational methods for finite element structures. Once the reduced order model obtained, numerical and analytical methods are detailed in order to get a complete picture of the dynamical solutions of the system in terms of stability and bifurcation. Applications from the MEMS and aerospace industry are covered and analyzed. Geometric nonlinearity, friction nonlinearity and contacts in jointed structures, detection and use of internal resonance, electromechanical and piezoelectric coupling with passive control, parametric driving are surveyed as key applications. The connection to digital twins is reviewed in a general manner, opening the door to the efficient use of invariant manifold theory for nonlinear analysis, design and control of engineering structures.

This book gathers peer-reviewed contributions presented at the RILEM Spring Convention and Conference, held in Milan, Italy on April 7-12, 2024. The theme of the Conference was “Advanced construction materials and processes for a carbon neutral society”, which was aimed at discussing advanced construction/eco-friendly materials and processes, for new and existing structures, towards a carbon neutral society. The volume covers the current and emerging approaches that lead to an optimized design and maintenance of constructions and systems. It includes the development of materials and structural service life models and life cycle design, in order to maximise longevity and level of service while minimising the environmental impact of constructions and systems. It also includes the analysis and design of larger systems, such as communities, cities or regions, aiming at reducing risk andincreasing resilience. The following subtopics are included: advanced materials and structural concept to enhance the resilience and robustness of the built environment and communities at local and global scales; risk based inspection and maintenance; life cycle analysis and service models; performance based design; improved design strategies by integrating materials and structures.

Material reliability is a critical factor in flight safety. For this reason, engineers and materials scientists continuously work to enhance the strength of materials to cope with the harsh conditions and potential material failures encountered during flight. This book combines theoretical knowledge and case studies to examine the fundamental and most frequent failure modes in aircraft alloys and the root causes of failures. Key topics covered include wear deformation, fracture characteristics, fatigue failure, stress corrosion cracking and creep failure. Insightful case studies explore a range of practical applications. Failure in Aircraft Materials appeals to a broad readership in the aviation and aerospace industry, including students, engineers, scientists, and researchers. It serves as an indispensable reference source for material science and modern production techniques. Offers a comprehensive look at aircraft material technologies; Provides state-of-the-art coverage of advanced materials, aerospace structures, and failure analysis; Includes case studies and practical applications.

This volume provides the information and methodology needed to predict the thermal boundary condition for a fire over time. The methods contained herein are based on experimental measurements and correlations, and mostly give global rather than local results. Eventually, computational fluid dynamics methods for fire must be subjected to some of the same tests used here and judged accordingly for accuracy and application.
