Municipalities around the world have increasingly used inclusionary housing programs to address their housing shortages. This book problematizes those programs in London and New York City by offering an empirical, research-based perspective on the socio-spatial dimensions of inclusionary housing approaches in both cities.

"Ageing and Urban Planning provides a critical analysis of urban planning in the face of demographic change. It emphasises the importance of international approaches and practices to address age-friendly planning. This process requires collaboration between professionals and the community, going beyond mere functionality to connect the micro and macro scales at the city, region, nation, and the global level. With an interdisciplinary and intersectional approach, the book draws on analytical lenses from architecture, gerontology, geography, sociology, social and urban planning. It offers a thorough critique of popular narratives surrounding ageing and urban planning while presenting diverse case studies on a variety of spatial scales. The volume also covers the history of urban design for ageing and inclusivity in planning governance, as well as a critical look at the concept of 'ageing in place' from the perspective of urban planning. The book offers a comprehensive selection of in-depth photos and figures from urban design studios, planning processes, and real-life scenarios. This collection provides a unique network of inspiring ideas. The book ultimately seeks to supplement the debate and promote a broader reflection about the transformations required in spatial planning, given the opportunities and challenges related to a world with increased longevity. This valuable resource is recommended for advanced students, researchers, and policymakers in the fields of urban planning, age-related disciplines and professions, and social policy"--

Build-to-rent (BTR) is a new solution for the shortage of affordable housing in the US. But BTR is a misunderstood concept, even perceived by some as a means of as destroying the American dream of homeownership. Charles Kriegel breaks through the rhetoric to reveal the upsides of BTR, which are professionally managed communities of single-family homes designed for people who rent but want the comforts and amenities of homeownership.

The urban villa is a mid-size, multi-family housing type which originated in the 1800s and has since become a staple housing type in many European cities and beyond. Its distinguishing characteristics are its density and speculative nature. The urban villa was born in an attempt to resolve aspirations to suburban living with the pressure of land costs. Despite its somewhat controversial reputation, the urban villa has been a (commercial) success due its indisputable appeal to all kinds of dwellers. The goal of this study is twofold: to revisit the rather elusive history of the urban villa, and to develop this architectural type in opposition to its speculative origins by treating it as the most appropriate form for affordable, public and cooperative housing.

Explores the historical roots of America's mobility crisis, revealing how zoning laws and discriminatory policies have systematically limited economic opportunities and restricted access to good neighborhoods, schools and housing for marginalized communities, and offers solutions to restore mobility and reinvigorate the American dream. How did America cease to be the land of opportunity? We take it for granted that good neighborhoods—with good schools and good housing—are only accessible to the wealthy. But in America, this wasn't always the case. Though for most of world history, your prospects were tied to where you were born, Americans came up with a revolutionary idea: If you didn't like your lot in life, you could find a better location and reinvent yourself there. Americans moved to new places with unprecedented frequency, and, for two hundred years, that remarkable mobility was the linchpin of American economic and social opportunity. In this illuminating debut, Yoni Appelbaum, historian and journalist for The Atlantic, shows us that this idea has been under attack since reformers first developed zoning laws to ghettoize Chinese Americans in nineteenth-century Modesto, California. The century of legal segregation that ensued—from the zoning laws enacted to force Jewish workers back into New York's Lower East Side to the private-sector discrimination and racist public policy that trapped Black families in Flint, Michigan to Jane Jacobs' efforts to protect her vision of the West Village—has raised housing prices, deepened political divides, emboldened bigots, and trapped generations of people in poverty. Appelbaum shows us that these problems have a common explanation: people can't move as readily as they used to. They are, in a word, stuck. Cutting through more than a century of mythmaking, Stuck tells a vivid, surprising story of the people and ideas that caused our economic and social sclerosis and lays out common-sense ways to get Americans moving again.
