Abstract

"A Heretical History of Architecture challenges the conventional understanding of significant developments in Western architecture as a series of alignments among dominant ideologies and artistic programs, arguing instead that the most consequential changes in the evolution of artistic and design practices across Europe between the fifth and seventeenth centuries were motivated by tensions between local religious or cultural traditions and centralized power. This groundbreaking study richly demonstrates the processes through which heterodox beliefs that persisted within numerous diverse communities resulted in design experimentation so syncretic that it has heretofore eluded scholars employing conventional Euro-centric taxonomies of architectural styles."--Provided by publisher.

Abstract

"This book offers a unique perspective on contemporary architecture, exploring its position in mediatization through technological apparatuses. It introduces the novel concept of apparatus-centricity and mediatization of architecture, which has significant disciplinary ramifications. The book's narrative traces the development of architecture from the modernist era to the present digital age, highlighting technological development, aestheticizing technologies, and theoretical changes. It focuses on how architecture incorporates and becomes a significant part of media technologies and virtualization, positioning itself as a crucial part of today's cognitive dispositive. The book reflects on the concept of dispositive (dispositif) for architecture and investigates the interactions between architecture and media through seminal examples from architecture, music, and media studies. The book explores how architecture is reshaped and influenced by theory and practice in media, ultimately serving as a cognitive agent. It underscores that architecture significantly influences our image-driven affective world through its apparatus-centric approach to conception, design, production, and mediatization. This book offers a unique perspective on the position of architecture in mediatization for researchers and advanced students in design, theory, and history. It also provides a valuable resource for cultural and media studies into the interdisciplinary impact of architecture in a mediatized culture at large"--

Abstract

The ex-Portuguese Island of Diu – a once strategic maritime gateway to the bay of Cambay, Gujarat, India – features in the corpus of Portuguese history and literature, but a comprehensive study of the island was lacking. Mehrdad and Natalie Shokoohy, known for surveying little-known historic sites in India, present the study of the built environment of Diu in conjunction with the contemporaneous Indian histories in Arabic and Persian, resulting in a fresh view of Indian Ocean commerce and conquest. Extensive surveys of the Fort, the Town and the Island, include the epigraphy, fortifications, urban fabric, mosques, shrines, churches, monasteries, water infrastructure and the Zoroastrian Fire Temple and Towers of Silence. Fragmentary Hindu and Jain archaeological remains are also noted.

Abstract

This volume, edited by Éva Forgács, with contributions from art historians from across Europe and the Americas, analyzes the artistic initiatives of the short time span between the end of World War II and the onset of the Cold War. In this moment, a new internationalism was anticipated by retrieving pre-war modernism, as well as creating the new era's new artistic lingua franca. The chapters include in-depth case studies that analyze the complex, often interconnected, projects throughout the world—South America, North Africa, and eastern and western Europe—that were soon ended by the Cold War. Abstract

A series of original essays on the history of British postwar architecture through the concept of performance - and the ubiquitous (but elusive) image of the arrow. In the 1950s, the figure of the arrow had a strange kind of ubiquity in architectural drawings, publications, and advertisements, symbolizing everything from the circulation of cold and warm air in a kitchen fridge to the flow of traffic in assorted New Towns. Twenty-five years earlier there were barely any arrows within architectural publications, and 15 years later they had all but disappeared. In On Arrows, Laurent Stalder looks back at the near past to trace the idea of performance in architecture by following this pervasive yet relatively unnoticed figure within the history of British architecture. During its short, intense period of use, the arrow pointed beyond any one singular author, typology, or scale, to the operative dimension of architecture and its environments, working both as an appropriate representational technique and a concrete tool for design. Stalder uses the arrow to move through the different dimensions of performance, mapping out the changing set of constellations that made up postwar British architecture and its environments: the constructive aspects, structural properties, infrastructural innovations, spatial challenges as well as their aesthetic and practical consequences. It is the arrow, he writes, that brings together debates from within different disciplines—from building physics, to sociology, structural design, and historiography, inscribed as they are in the materials, spaces, and buildings that are all too often considered in isolation from one another.

Abstract

Interconnected investigations between conservators, historians, heritage scientists and museum professionals centre on objects that were essential to medieval Christianity in Scandinavia (c. 1100‒1530). Through new and diverse physical data from polychrome sculptures, shrines, winged altarpieces and painted banners, the authors probe a range of issues and problems, from original devotional functions and changing appearances, to the impacts of changing liturgies, locations and priorities, including those for curation within museums. This book highlights the diversity of theoretical and practical approaches to sacred medieval religious objects, and brings together new findings related to the transformations of these objects since the Reformations. Abstract

The first English anthology of the writings of a critical figure in the history of modern architecture in Europe. The first English anthology of the writings of the British-Italian architect, editor, critic, and educator Ernesto Rogers (1909–1969), The Hero of Doubt showcases the intellectual power and scope of one of the most influential yet, paradoxically, unrecognized exponents of the modern movement in Europe. These essays, edited by Roberta Marcaccio and newly translated from the Italian, reveal how, more than any other architect of the twentieth century, Rogers positioned himself as a mediator between the heroic generation of the modern masters and the younger intellectuals who went on to shape the contextualist turns of architectural postmodernism in the 1970s. The texts in this volume cover a period of 33 years, from Rogers's initial adherence to fascism and his subsequent struggle as a Jewish intellectual after the proclamation of the racial purity laws, to his poignant post-war reflections on the issues of reconstruction, the education of the architect and, more broadly, the architect's role in society. Tracing his nuanced critique of the excesses and inadequacies of both fascism and the utopianism of modernism, the writings show how, over time, Rogers's ideas resonated through the post-war cultural scene in Italy and beyond. In sum, they fill an obvious lacuna within the history of the modern movement and provide a more layered understanding of postmodernity. This project has been made possible by generous grants from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts and the Architectural Association, School of Architecture.

Abstract

More than Buildings studies the buildings typology in Portuguese cities and their relationship with the program (the way in which it responds to a function), the territory where it is integrated and with time and the way in which built forms evolve. The book is structured around a set of key theoretical texts that highlight the potential of knowledge about typology (and its specific formal characteristics) in the production of new architectural objects. In this sense, the book has a didactic value based on the theoretical synthesis it produces, which allows it to expose certain spatial and formal attributes of the typologies and thus constitute a reference for new processes of architectural production. The method of analysis and decomposition of the case studies presented in each chapter provide a useful reading and interpretation key for different readers. The typology should be understood as a reference in the act of designing, demonstrating how to understand the elementary formal and spatial principles. For the municipal authorities, or other political decision-makers, the book will enable them to interpret the value of typology and its relevance in the production of cities. This data could be useful, for example, in planning actions that aim at preserving or converting urban areas of architectural value. The book will be relevant to readers within an academic framework and in the professional field engaged in work around architecture, cities, planning, and conservation.
