Many historical figures have their lives and works shrouded in myth, both in life and long after their deaths. Charles Darwin (1809-82) is no exception to this phenomenon and his hero-worship has become an accepted narrative. This concise, accessible and engaging collection unpacks this narrative to rehumanize Darwin's story and establish what it meant to be a 'genius' in the Victorian context. Leading Darwin scholars have come together to argue that, far from being a lonely genius in an ivory tower, Darwin had fortune, diligence and - crucially - community behind him. The aims of this essential work are twofold. First, to set the historical record straight, debunking the most pervasive myths and correcting falsehoods. Second, to provide a deeper understanding of the nature of science itself, relevant to historians, scientists and the public alike.

The biological world is full of phenomena that seem to run counter to Darwin's insight that natural selection can lead to the appearance of design. For instance, why do organisms in some species divide reproductive labor? The existence of non-reproducing organisms in such 'eusocial' species looks to be at odds with an evolutionary theory which posits traits exist because they help organisms survive and reproduce. What is the evolutionary advantage of an insect being distasteful to its predators? The distastefulness appears designed to deter predators, but can only affect the predator's actions when the insect is eaten; it is hard to see how such a trait could be passed on. This Element will cover the shared foundations of evolutionary explanations for these and other seemingly puzzling phenomena, focusing on the concepts of inclusive fitness and kin selection.

In the United States and elsewhere, the questions of who should serve as a judge and how these judges should be chosen are increasingly contested. In Litigating Judicial Selection, Herbert Kritzer examines these questions with a comprehensive analysis of judicial-selection litigation over time and place. With a data set of over 2,000 cases from around the world, Kritzer offers new insight into the judicial selection by way of in-depth statistical analysis and an extensive narrative description of several important case studies. This book should be read by anyone seeking insight into the way judges are selected in the twenty-first century.

Natural selection, mutation, and adaptation are well-known and central topics in Darwin's theory of evolution and in the 20th - and 21st -century theories which grew out of it, but many other important topics are used in evolutionary biology that raise interesting philosophical questions. In this book, Elliott Sober analyses a much larger range of topics, including fitness, altruism, common ancestry, chance, taxonomy, phylogenetic inference, operationalism, reductionism, conventionalism, null hypotheses and default reasoning, instrumentalism versus realism, hypothetico-deductivism, essentialism, falsifiability, the principle of parsimony, the principle of the common cause, causality, determinism versus indeterminism, sensitivity to initial conditions, and the knowability of the past. Sober's clear philosophical analyses of these key concepts, arguments, and methods of inference will be valuable for all readers who want to understand evolutionary biology in both its Darwinian and its contemporary forms.

Current recruitment and selection practices are essentially a cloning process which seeks to match applicants with the current corporate culture of the hiring organisation. This ignores applicants with different points of view, differing value systems and career aspirations. Authors Fons Trompenaars and Peter Woolliams explore the idea that, while all organisations should develop and promote their core values, the application of them needs to be revisited. New Approaches to Recruitment and Selection presents a new framework that compares current corporate cultures with the evolving value systems of current and potential employees. The authors believe that applicants should match the organization's needs and explore how different categories of applicants can enrich the organisation whilst providing full engagement. The authors' longitudinal research on traditional frameworks and practices shows that while companies strive to be objective, they are rarely free of cultural bias. They identify serious shortcomings in how organisations utilise their people. While most organisations are implementing a wide range of policies and programmes to identify and eliminate pay inequalities, and improve their attractiveness to women and minorities, great change has not materialised. Each volume in this series will explore failing established models and propose new conceptual frameworks with practical approaches. International case studies enrich the arguments and findings. Purchase of this book includes exclusive access to app-based content, enabling readers to explore the application of specific concepts in further detail.

This study makes the case that natural selection can do the exact opposite, favouring traits that directly harm an organism's ability to survive and reproduce, by synthesizing evidence from evolution, ecology and genetics to explain how maladaptations are possible, with drastic consequences for our understanding of the design of living things.
