The INGO Problem by Deborah Doane offers a critical examination of the international non-governmental organization (INGO) landscape, highlighting the structural inequities ingrained in the system. Drawing from her extensive experience in civil society and philanthropy, Doane critiques the power dynamics, governance structures, and funding mechanisms that hinder the effectiveness of INGOs in fostering equitable global development. She advocates for a radical reimagining of the role of INGOs, emphasizing the importance of empowering local civil society groups as key development actors. The book is intended for leaders, boards, and stakeholders within the INGO sector, aiming to provoke necessary conversations and drive systemic change.

"This book examines how civil society engaged with transitional justice in Russia, demonstrating a broad range of roles civil society can undertake while operating in a restrictive political context. Based on socio-legal research, the study focuses on three types of civil society groups dealing with the legacies of the Soviet repression in Russia - a prominent organisation that works on recovering historical truth, the International Memorial; a parish of the Orthodox Church of Russia operating at a former mass execution and mass burial site, the Church at Butovo; and contentious groups that could hinder attempts at reckoning and promote state narratives built on the Stalinist and World War II victory myths. This book explores an often-overlooked case of Russia's transitional justice 'from below.' It provides insights into how even in authoritarian contexts, civil society can adopt imaginative, piecemeal, and, at times, unconventional ways of seeking justice outside and in the absence of official and institutionalised transitional justice measures. This book will appeal to scholars of transitional justice, memory studies, human rights, and democratic and civil society theory, as well as policymakers and practitioners in these fields, and others with interests in Russian and post-Soviet studies"--

This Element traces the history of and recent developments in the unstable relationship between global civil society (GCS) and China. It analyses the normative impacts GCS has had on China - including the Chinese state and domestic civil society - and the possibilities created by Beijing's new 'going out' policies for Chinese civil society groups. It examines the rhetoric and reality of GCS as an emancipatory project and argues that 'universal values' underpinned by principles of human rights and democracy have gained currency in China despite official resistance from the government. It argues that while the Chinese party-state is keen to benefit from GCS engagement, Beijing is also determined to minimize any impact outside groups might have on regime security. The Element concludes with some observations about future research directions and the internationalization of Chinese civil society.

"Delving into a burgeoning field of research, this enlightening book utilises case studies from across the globe to explore how digital media is used at the grassroots level to combat corruption. Bringing together an impressive range of experts, Alice Mattoni deftly assesses the design, creation and use of a wide range of anti-corruption technologies. This invaluable book introduces the concept of anti-corruption technologies (ACTs) to answer critical questions about the opportunities and challenges that established and emerging digital media offers to practitioners. Chapters detail the situated nature of these technologies, before examining key technologies including anonymous crowdsourcing, collaborative platforms, whistleblowing platforms and online monitoring of electoral corruption. Finally, the book offers a critical understanding of the challenges that digital media poses to anti-corruption practitioners in different contexts, and how this is linked to different conceptions of democracy. Comprehensive and empirically-grounded, Digital Media and Grassroot Anti-Corruption will be an important resource for students and scholars of corruption studies, digital sociology, law and politics, public policy, regulation and governance, and the study of social movements. It will also be vital reading for anti-corruption practitioners and policymakers interested in civil society organisations working at the grassroots level"--
