Abstract

Abstract

"Offering a critical and sensitive reflection on journalists' nonverbal behaviours during their coverage of school shootings in the U.S., this book shows how individual and social level factors predict broadcasters' nonverbal neutrality. Nonverbal behaviours have the ability to transmit bias, influence audiences, and impact perceptions of journalists. Yet journalists report receiving little to no training on nonverbal communication, despite often being placed in emotional, chaotic situations that affect their ability to remain neutral during coverage. This book provides theoretical and methodological contributions, as well as applicable advice, to assist researchers', instructors', and journalists' understandings of ongoing boundary negotiations of this rarely discussed but highly impactful aspect of objectivity. Through the proposal of the Nonverbal Neutrality Theory, it outlines predictive patterns and routines that contribute to the variability of nonverbal neutrality, and equips readers, including industry professionals and journalism educators, with examples of best practice to help better plan for crisis coverage. The work draws on journalists' reflections on professional norms and conceptualizations of nonverbal neutrality, vicarious traumatization, and social and organizational level influences. As one of the first to explore nonverbal neutrality, its predictive factors, and patterns across crisis events, this book provides a much-needed insight into nonverbal behaviours of broadcast journalists at a time when the media relies ever more on visual delivery on television, digital, and social media networks"--

Abstract

"Television has a prime role to play in the formation of discursive domains in the everyday life of South Asian publics. This book explores various television media practices, social processes, mediated political experiences and everyday cultural compositions from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. With the help of country specific case studies, it captures broad range of themes which foreground the publics and their real-life experiences of television in the region. The essays in this book discuss gendered television spaces; women seeking solace from television in pandemic; the taboo in digital TV dramas; television viewership and localizing publics; changing viewership from television to OTT; news and public perception of death; re-defining 'the national'; theatrical television; and post truth television news, among other key issues. Rich in ethnographic case studies, this volume will be a useful resource for scholars and researchers of media and communication studies, journalism, digital media, South Asian studies, cultural studies, sociology and social anthropology"-- Provided by publisher.

Abstract

"The first book on the intersection between market research and media, Creating the Viewer takes a critical look at media companies' studies of television viewers, the assumptions behind these studies, and the images of the viewer that are constructed through them. Justin Wyatt examines various types of market research, including talent testing, pilot testing, series maintenance, brand studies, and new show "ideation," providing examples from a range of programming including news, sitcoms, reality shows, and dramas. He looks at brand studies for networks such as E!, and examines how the brands of individuals such as showrunner Ryan Murphy can be tested. Both an analytical and practical work, the book includes sample questionnaires and paths for study moderators and research analysts to follow. Drawn from over fifteen years of experience in research departments at various media companies, Creating the Viewer looks toward the future of media viewership, discussing how the concept of the viewer has changed in the age of streaming, how services such as Netflix view market research, and how viewers themselves can shift the industry through their media choices, behaviors, and activities"--

Abstract

"This book examines the phenomenal growth over recent years of Star Times, a Chinese pay television company with around 30 million subscribers providing satellite television to twenty African countries. The broadcaster, whose markets include demographic groups deemed uneconomic by Western television providers, combines entertainment such as Chinese drama and kung fu content dubbed into African languages with Chinese state programming, thus making the station at least partially a public diplomacy instrument. At the same time, the channel provides new indigenous language channels, widened access to television in rural areas, and sponsors African soccer brands. The book considers all aspect of Star Times: how it fits into China's development assistance programmes; its structure as a private company nonetheless financed by Chinese banks; and, based on extensive interview research in Ghana, Kenya and Zambia, how the station is perceived by media professionals. Overall, the book shows how this major Chinese international media expansion both contributes very significantly to African development in a way which is sensitive to local concerns, and at the same time enhances China's international image"--

Abstract

"Closures surveys the seven-decade history of the American sitcom from the perspective of trans theory. With detailed close readings of shows from The Mary Tyler Moore Show to Who's the Boss to Third Rock from the Sun, Friends, BoJack Horseman, The Office, and others, Grace E. Lavery highlights the centrality of the blended family narrative that situates the family as a perpetually incomplete project as well as the weakening of social ties as the sitcom evolves from a family setting to a friendship group to a workplace setting. The book's title refers to how episodic narrative closure in the serialized sitcom paradoxically requires a continual reopening of the stable family, disrupting the traditional finality of the comedic marriage plot. In this way, the sitcom character, operating in a situation of endless becoming, is rendered structurally trans"--
