Abstract

"Set against the context of a changing professional landscape, this book examines the journey of the authors, Jo and Diana, as they transitioned from working in the NHS to setting up an independent practice following redundancy. Highlighting both the benefits and challenges, the authors outline the steps they took to move from survival mode and crisis management to a position of stability and success. This book provides readers with a wealth of practical advice, helping them to avoid pitfalls and seize opportunities with confidence when establishing their own independent practice. It also touches on the fall-out from redundancy - pertinent to any job, anywhere. Chapters explore a variety of topics, including but not limited to: The national context, implications for setting up an independent practice and business models Practical considerations: financial management, contracts, governance, technology, creating a team and models of clinical service delivery Assessing success and identifying areas for improvement; measuring impact, troubleshooting, and looking to the future Written in an entertaining yet informative manner, with the voices of other experienced professionals drawn on throughout in the form of personal stories and specialist contributions, this book is essential reading for speech and language therapists (and others) considering going down the independent route"--

Abstract

Hate speech comprises any form of hateful or contemptuous expression that attacks, degrades, or vilifies people based on their social identities. This Element focuses on hate speech targeting social identities that are devalued by a society's dominant groups, and that is likely to evoke, promote, or legitimize harms such violence, discrimination, and oppression. After detailing the ways in which hate speech is expressed (e.g., through derogatory labels, metaphors, offensive imagery), the production of hate speech is explored at theindividual level (e.g., prejudiced attitudes), group level (e.g., realistic intergroup threat), and societal level (e.g., hierarchy maintenance; free speech protections). A discussion of the effects of blatant and anonymous hate speech on targets (e.g., anxiety and depression) and nontargets (e.g., stereotype activation; desensitization; fomenting violence) follows. Finally, the effectiveness of mitigation efforts isexplored, including use of computer-based technologies, speech codes, confrontation, and counterspeech.

Abstract

This Element outlines current issues in the study of speech acts. It starts with a brief outline of four waves of speech act theory, that is, the philosophical, the experimental, the corpus-based and the discursive approaches. It looks at some of the early experimental and corpus-based methods and discusses their more recent developments as a background to the most important trends in current speech act research. Discursive approaches shift the focus from single utterances to interaction and interactional sequences. Multimodal approaches show that the notion of 'speech act' needs to be extended in order to cover the multimodality of communicative acts. And diachronic approaches focus on the historicity of speech acts. The final section discusses some open issues and potential further developments of speech act research.

Abstract

"Spoken language is a rapidly unfolding signal: a complex code that the listener must crack to understand what is being said. From the structures of the inner ear through to higher-order areas of the brain, a hierarchy of interlinked processes transforms the acoustic signal into a linguistic message within fractions of a second. This Element outlines how speech is perceived and explores what the auditory system needs to achieve to make this possible. It traces a path through the system and discusses the mechanisms that enable us to perceive speech as a coherent sequence of words. This is combined with a brief history of research into language and the brain beginning in the nineteenth century, as well as an overview of the state-of-the-art neuroimaging and analysis techniques that are used to investigate phonetics in the brain today. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core"--

Abstract

'Freedom of Speech in International Law' charts the minimum protections for speech enshrined in international human rights law. It clarifies what the right to freedom of expression means under international law, identifies conflicts between law and state practice, and provides key recommendations as to how international standards should be interpreted, updated, and enforced. Each of the book's six chapters focuses on an area of the law that is being weaponized to silence the press or curtail freedom of expression.

Abstract

Elizabeth Weiss's 'On the Warpath: My Battles with Indians, Pretendians, and Woke Warriors' explores her experiences and controversies surrounding her work in anthropology, particularly regarding her stance on repatriation and academic freedom. The book delves into her professional challenges, including accusations of racism, and her legal battle with San José State University. Weiss critiques the influence of 'woke' culture on academic discourse and the preservation of scientific inquiry. The narrative is aimed at scholars, academics, and those interested in debates over free speech and the impact of political correctness in academia. Through personal anecdotes and reflections, Weiss advocates for open inquiry and the defense of scientific research against what she perceives as censorious actions.
