Most people have some dissatisfaction or concern about body weight, fatness, or obesity, either personally or professionally. This book shows how the popular understanding of obesity is often at odds with scientific understandings, and how misunderstandings about people with obesity can further contribute to the problem. It describes, in an approachable way, interconnected debates about obesity in public policy, medicine and public health, and how media and social media engage people in everyday life in those debates. In chapters considering body fat and fatness, genetics, metabolism, food and eating, inequality, blame and stigma, and physical activity, this book brings separate domains of obesity research into the field of complexity. By doing so, it aids navigation through the minefield of misunderstandings about body weight, fatness, and obesity that exist today, after decades of mostly failed policies and interventions.

"In 2012, two of us (KB & MG) published the first edition of this book. It was an exciting venture, as research on the topic of food and addiction was gaining momentum, there had been a conference on the topic, and the implications of the work were becoming more evident. That book was the product of a collaborative relationship across fields not previously connected. Kelly Brownell, then at Yale University and doing work on obesity prevention and public health nutrition, learned of the work of Mark Gold, a senior addictions researcher in psychiatry at the University of Florida. Mark was one of a handful of addiction researchers interested in whether food might act on the brain in ways similar to classic addictive substances. Brownell invited Gold to speak at Yale, which led to the two co-hosting the first ever conference on food and addiction at Yale in 2007. "This book offers a comprehensive review of current research and theoretical approaches to pediatric obesity. Pediatric obesity is a significant public health concern that requires a multifaceted approach to treatment. Key factors including ethnic, gender, and socioeconomic diversity, health equity and lifestyle behaviors all impact the prevalence of pediatric obesity, and the development of lifestyle interventions must take these into account. Written for mental health providers as well as medical providers such as doctors, nurses, dietitians, and exercise physiologists who provide care to children and adolescents, this book offers a comprehensive review of current research and theoretical approaches, as well as clear descriptions of evidence-based programs that prevent and treat pediatric obesity. With a special focus on psychological factors, including comorbid mental health disorders that are essential to treatment and prevention efforts, the authors incorporate cutting-edge research and their extensive clinical experience as they review evidence-based treatments that can be incorporated into pediatric obesity services including lifestyle interventions, medications, immersion programs, and surgical approaches. "Managing and securing a sustained decrease in the prevalence of childhood obesity is one of the major public health challenges of the 21st century. In 2021 the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that there were 39 million children under the age of 5 living with overweight or obesity in the year 2020. While there were over 340 million children and young people (CYP) aged 5-19 living with overweight or obesity in the year 2016 [2]. The WHO demonstrated the importance they placed on tackling childhood obesity to worldwide health by setting a target in 2011 for worldwide childhood obesity prevalence to be no more than 2010 levels by the year 2025"--

The incidence of obesity has increased rapidly since 1980. The purpose of this book is to review public health approaches to this pandemic and describe why they have failed. Based on this, possible alternatives are discussed. A theme of the book is that to understand obesity you need to take nutritional, psychological, biochemical and physiological viewpoints, as well as a societal perspective. Yet public health policy has been characterized by simplistic approaches that often consider only one aspect of a particular discipline. Too often it has been claimed that one factor, for example fat or sugar, has caused obesity, or can have a major impact on it. To have any chance of influencing the prevalence of obesity, the size of the necessary changes, and complexity of the situation, must be recognized. Reducing the incidence of obesity is an urgent task and this book is intended to stimulate discussion, encourage public health policy makers and government to defend their policies, and consider alternatives. It is written in an accessible language, explaining connections in an easy to understand manner and is thus written for everyone interested in weight control and public health policy. About the Author: David Benton is Professor of Psychology at Swansea University in the United Kingdom. He has for over forty years been studying the influence of diet on cognition, mood, and behaviour. His work is internationally known and has resulted in invitations from over twenty-five countries on six continents. He has been asked by the House Parliament, House of Lords and Downing Street, to give advice to the UK government on obesity, hyperactivity and school breakfasts.
