Abstract

Depuis la moitié du XIXe siècle, le système terre-océan est progressivement et profondément perturbé : la mobilisation des énergies fossiles et le développement des activités anthropiques engendrent de massives émissions de dioxyde de carbone, de méthane et d'autres gaz qui accroissent l'effet de serre naturel et provoquent un changement climatique global. Cet ouvrage montre comment l'océan régule le climat en absorbant la grande majorité de la chaleur générée par l'excès d'effet de serre et une bonne part des émissions de gaz carbonique émises par les activités humaines. Pour parvenir à la neutralité carbone, il nous faut changer de cap et mettre fin à l'utilisation des énergies fossiles. Le fort potentiel d'énergies marines renouvelables peut nous aider. Des géoingénieurs proposent même de manipuler l'océan pour qu'il absorbe davantage de gaz à effet de serre.
