"A tremendous resource for both practitioners and researchers in the field to better understand men's needs and improve their delivery of person-centred care." - Paul Galdas, Professor of Nursing and Men's Health, University of York, UK "A very clever book that covers a breadth of important issues in relation to men's health while also providing critical nuance and depth. A must read for anyone with a genuine interest in moving men's health forward." - Steve Robertson, Emeritus Professor of Men, Gender and Health, University of Sheffield, UK "A very important book in the growing field of men's health. The honesty with which the men open up to describe their day-to-day realities gives an insight that all working within the health and social care sector should read and learn from." - Alan White, Emeritus Professor of Men's Health, Leeds Becket University, UK "An engaging and accessible handbook to the many intricacies of men's health that demands a place on the shelves of every clinician and academic with an interest in men's health and wellbeing." - Ally Fogg, writer and co-founder of Men and Boys Coalition This book explores male health psychology in relation to chronic health conditions. Using data from men with rheumatic diseases as a starting point, this book draws on the wider literature to focus on how men talk about different aspects of living with long-term health issues. This includes how men discuss the impact of chronic illness on their sense of control and self-reliance, masculine identity, body image, mental health, sex and intimacy, and for those living with a life-limiting condition how they discuss facing their mortality. It also covers how men self-manage and what influences their help-seeking behaviours. Whilst men are often branded as 'hard to reach', the author argues that when given permission and provided with the right environment, men will talk about their health. This book takes the stance men are under-served by health services and includes suggestions for developing support services for health and mental health that meet men's needs and preferences. Focussing on the experiences and support needs of men with long-term conditions, this is an ideal reading for clinicians, healthcare professionals, and practitioners working with men with long-term conditions, as well as early career researchers and students interested in male psychology, men's health, and gender and society. Caroline Flurey is a chartered psychologist and Associate Professor of Men's Health and Long-Term Conditions at the University of the West of England, Bristol, UK. She is trustee of the Men & Boys Coalition and member of parliament's task and finish group for men's health.

This book draws upon qualitative interviews with lower-middle class men with adult children. It provides important insight into a region of the world that has not been sufficiently studied in the field of Masculinity Studies and analyzes manhood/fatherhood from a novel perspective. It uses Margaret Wetherell’s (2012) theory of “affective practice” to focus on moments men experience masculinity as “essence” and “free play” as formulated by Todd W. Reeser (2010). Elaborating on affective practices which stabilize and destabilize makbulhood, manhood, and fatherhood, it focuses on a long-excluded generation of men in the literature and illuminates men’s “Iamnotlikethem” and “Iamlikeallmenontheearth” moments. It is relevant to researchers in gender studies, masculinity studies, social psychology, and family sociology. Mürüvet Esra Yıldırım is an award-winning qualitative researcher, content consultant, and playwright. She has introduced the Guided Autobiography technique in Turkey and commences regular groups to initiate artistic and daily dialogues. .

This book delves into the complexities of masculinity, mental health, and cultural identity among young Bangladeshi-Canadian men. Employing an anthropological, intersectional approach, it scrutinizes the interplay of neoliberal ideologies, Islamic values, and diasporic experiences in shaping their masculine trajectories. The study unravels the intergenerational trauma, parental pressures, and societal expectations that contribute to their deteriorating mental well-being. With a unique insider perspective and rich empirical data, this book fills a crucial gap in the literature by offering invaluable insights for scholars exploring the nuances of migration, ethnicity, gender, and psychological resilience. Strikingly, the author proposes evidence-based interventions and policy recommendations to address the mental health struggles of this underserved population, making it a must-read for academics and students in diaspora studies, migration studies, sociology of race and ethnicity, gender studies, anthropology, political science and development studies, as well as NGOs and policymakers alike. Mustahid Husain is Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Anthropology, University of Toronto, Canada. His scholarly interests intersect digital, feminist, and socio-cultural anthropology spanning global political economy, masculinity's impact on mental health, and social justice and governance. Driven by community engagement and visual participatory action research, Husain's ongoing work investigates how Muslim masculinities are shaped by intergenerational dynamics and male dominance within diasporic contexts, and how these emergent masculinities influence mental health outcomes. His latest monograph is Development, Neoliberalism, and Islamism in South Asia: The Case of Bangladesh (Palgrave Macmillan 2022). .

"The book challenges post-colonial melancholia, read as white privilege or white supremacist thought and action, in novel and interesting ways from a NigerianUK perspective, through the lens of 'transgressive black bodies'. The fact that the author focuses on post-colonial feminist thought and how this can be used to understand an African diasporic presence, within the UK and beyond, is excellently captured in the inclusion of herstories. Similarly, the inclusion of Afrobeat sheds light on how black music is policed and weaponised, in ways that militate against UK black communities in overt and covert ways, within the wider public arena." -Dr William 'Lez' Henry (PhD) Professor of Criminology and Sociology, University of West London. This book traces the feminine soul of Afrobeat from tumultuous colonial (her)stories through to the vibrant heterotopias of the urban spaces and times of Black British youths of African racial heritage. Communicative action is a human right, as per the portents of the United Nations in its 1948 declaration, which recognises the human right to communication. Borne from the cultural political struggles against persistent coloniality in post-independence Nigeria, Afrobeat is communicative action. Afrobeat is the music of Nigerian dissent, that has become the music of an African diaspora. Unique in its way of seeing intergenerational decolonial diaspora studies through the refracted prism of Nigerian Afrobeat, this book's extensive empirical and theoretical basis is directed toward the question: How to be Black British born in a country that colonised our maternal ancestors? It will be of interest to scholars and students in gender studies, African studies, decolonial studies, sociology, and media studies. Pamela Odih is Senior Lecturer in Sociology at Goldsmiths, University of London, UK. Her research as focused on the regulation of subjects and the construction of gendered subjectivity, with specific regards to consumption, advertising, organisational analysis and educational policy. She has published in Gender, Work and Organization; Race, Ethnicity and Education; and Journal for Cultural Research.

This book presents an in-depth analysis of young people’s experiences of diverse drinking practices, including heavy drinking and drunkenness, as fun and pleasurable as they navigate gendered leisure spaces. Using qualitative data elicited through semi-structured interviews and focus group discussion, the analysis engages with theories and concepts of culture, gender, and transgression to foreground the roles that socio-cultural and material elements and human agency play in shaping alcohol consumption in contemporary Nigeria. It focuses on the enactment of hyper-heterosexual and alternative masculinities and the reconfigurations of passive and non-passive femininities through drinking practices. It also interrogates how and why multinational alcohol companies are targeting Nigerian women and youths and the extent to which their activities are contributing to changing gendered drinking and sexual practices, which are at odds with the extant local norms that promote abstinence, moderation among adults, and sexual purity among unmarried youths. Importantly, this book moves beyond solely Western theorizing by drawing on both Western and non-Western gender theories to analyze how contemporary Nigerian young men and women ‘do’ masculinity and femininity with alcohol and will be a valuable resource for social scientists, students, policymakers, practitioners, and the general public interested in youth drinking behaviours, multinational alcohol companies' activities, and decolonizing gender scholarship. Emeka W. Dumbili is an Assistant Professor in Sociology and an Ad Astra Fellow in the School of Sociology, University College Dublin, Ireland. His research focuses on gender and identity, sociology of substance use, leisure studies, youth studies, social theories, and qualitative methodologies. Dr. Dumbili has published numerous journal articles and book chapters on gender, transgression, alcohol, and other psychoactive substance use. .

This handbook provides a comprehensive, interdisciplinary overview of key theoretical and analytical approaches, topics and debates in contemporary scholarship on African masculinities. Refusing to privilege Western theoretical constructs (but remaining in dialogue with them), contributors explore the contestations around and diversities within men, masculinities and sexualities in Africa; investigate individual and collective practices of masculinity; and interrogate the social construction of masculinities. Bringing together insights from scholars across gender studies, sociology, anthropology, philosophy, history, literature and religion, this book demonstrates how recognizing and upholding the integrity of African phenomena, locating and reflecting on men and masculinities in varied African contexts and drawing new theoretical frameworks all combine to take the discourse on men and masculinities in Africa forward. Chapters examine a range of issues within the context of masculinities, including embodiment, sport, violence, militarism, spirituality, gender roles, fatherhood, homosexuality, health and work. This handbook will be valuable reading for scholars, researchers, and policymakers in Gender Studies (particularly Masculinity Studies) and Africana Studies.

"A well researched, thoughtfully argued, and compassionate take on the largest challenges facing young men, and therefore us all. This is a book that couldn't have come at a more critical time." -Chanel Contos, Activist and CEO, Teach Us Consent "The crisis with young men's mental health is real. Equally real is the crisis of how we think about young men. This book takes us from crisis to opportunity, from talking about young men to talking with them. It is centred in care - caring for and about young men, and caring about real solutions rather than throwing up our hands in alarm." -Gary Barker, CEO, Equimundo Center for Masculinities and Social Justice "This timely book of reviews is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand how and where many young men today are forging their masculine identities, seeking to satisfy their relationship needs, and coping with life's inevitable stresses." -Dr. Judy Chu, Author of When Boys Become Boys "From Echo Chambers to Evidence" seeks to understand young men's mental health by going to the places and spaces where they spend their time. It is essential reading for researchers, clinicians, policymakers and members of the general public who care about men's wellbeing. Each chapter focuses on the contemporary nexus between masculinities and health, encompassing alcohol, gambling, sport, gaming, social media, pornography, and dating apps, to explore how and why these areas are central to young men's lives and their health. Addressing the present day 'crisis of masculinity', this edited volume comprises a series of up-to-date reviews to emphasise strength-based, healthy masculinities in young men's mental health. It seeks to understand and engage with research, policy, and practice to co-design effective interventions supporting young men, presenting a clear agenda to direct future efforts.
