The Berlin Gemäldegalerie houses an internationally outstanding collection of early Netherlandish and French paintings. This scholarly catalogue is dedicated to the works of the pioneer generation, i.e. those artists who began their career in or before the second third of the fifteenth century. In 52 entries, 69 individual paintings are discussed. All the important masters of the period are represented, many of them with major works – such as the Madonna in the Church by Jan van Eyck, the Miraflores Altarpiece by Rogier van der Weyden, the donor panel of Étienne Chevalier by Jean Fouquet, the only known painting by the early Dutch master Albert van Ouwater or the Montforte Altarpiece by Hugo van der Goes. The individual entries are based on art-historical and technological investigations and were written in an interdisciplinary collaboration. This richly illustrated publication presents a wealth of new insights into both the well-known works, and panels that had received less attention in former times.

This incisive account of modernism's postwar development examines how painters, such as Joan Mitchell, Barnett Newman, and Rose Piper, invoked tradition in order to respond to, participate in, and disrupt the histories of the movement being written at midcentury. Saul Nelson argues that artists' turn to the past, often dismissed as regressive, offers an important counternarrative to the notion of modernism as always pushing forward. To be a modernist, Nelson contends, was to live in doubt--about which aspects of the past were still needed and how they might be put to new use. The story ranges across continents and historical boundaries, from India to Europe and the United States. It encompasses Grace Hartigan's and Mitchell's feminist reworkings of Matisse, the links between the work of Newman and nationalistic nineteenth-century painting, the attempts of Piper to salvage a heritage from the Harlem Renaissance, and F. N. Souza's interrogations of the legacies of colonialism. Never Ending presents a new history of postwar painting in which modernism is reimagined as a practice of retrieval and reinvention, a ceaseless confrontation between tradition and the demands of the present.

The artist group Brücke is Germany’s most important contribution to international modernism. The group was formed in Dresden in 1905 by four young architecture students: Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Otto Bleyl, Erich Heckel, and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. Together they developed a painting style with vivid colors, simplified forms, and large color fields that express internal feelings rather than reproducing an external reality. The group disbanded in 1913, but their collaboration and marketing strategies have been inspirational for several generations of artists. These young artists wanted to renew art and life in the German Imperial Empire and break with the prevailing moral norms of the day. They were interested in topics like man and nature; the naked body; portraits; self-portraits; the merging of life and art; and life in the vibrant metropolis of Berlin. In a time like the present, when a young generation feels the need for a new way of living, thinking, and organizing, reflecting on Brücke feels particularly relevant.

Published to accompany a major exhibition at Zeitz MOCAA, CapeTown, When We See Us presents a comprehensive exploration of Black representation through portraiture and figuration, celebrating Black subjectivity and Black consciousness from Pan-African and Pan-Diasporic perspectives. In the past decade, figurative painting by Black artists has risento a new prominence in the field of contemporary art. This timely and revelatory book highlights the many ways in which artists critically engage with notions of blackness, contributing to the critical discourse on topics such as Pan-Africanism, the Civil Rights Movement, African Liberation and Independence movements, the Anti-Apartheid and Black Consciousness mobilizations, Decoloniality, and Black Lives Matter. With a primary focus on figurative painting, When We See Us explores how Black artists have imagined, positioned, memorialized, and asserted African and African diasporic experiences from the early 20th century to the present day. Featuring more than 200 works of art—and contributions from well-known writers such as Ken Bugul, Maaza Mengiste, Robin Coste Lewis, and Bill Kouelany—When We See Us is a major contribution to our understanding of Black art that will appeal to anyone interested in modern and contemporary figurative art and Black cultural history.
