Abstract

This book examines significant developments in reflective practice, delving into research conducted with novice teachers. It fills a gap in existing literature by examining the 'how' of reflective practice. How do professionals learn reflective practice, fostering relearning? How do they guide students, mentees, and novices in adopting reflective practices? Stemming from teacher education, the focus is extended beyond this field, emphasizing the relevance of these strategies across professions. It is divided into three parts – thinking about reflection; learning to reflect; and becoming a reflective practitioner. It offers fresh perspectives on conceptualizing reflective practice and suggests practical strategies for integrating it into pre-service coursework, assessment, training, and development. Intended for academics, practitioners, and educators across disciplines, this book serves as a comprehensive guide for anyone committed to fostering reflective practice within their professional sphere.

The book is written for a broad audience and will appeal to those working in universities, as well as family members and students who may be contemplating participating in higher education. Sarah O’Shea works with Curtin University and the University of Wollongong, Australia. As a higher education researcher, she considers how under-represented student cohorts enact success within university settings. Josephine R. May is Honorary Associate Professor at the University of Newcastle, Australia. Her research focuses on the history of education. Cathy Stone is Conjoint Associate Professor with the University of Newcastle, Australia. Her research focuses on students who are first in family, mature age, regional and remote, and studying online. Janine Delahunty is Honorary Fellow at the University of Wollongong, Australia, with research that embraces the diverse perspectives of equity students, staff, online learners and teachers.

Abstract

The purpose of this timely and stimulating book is to thoroughly prepare students, early researchers, and career scholars in establishing their digital identity online. Broadly defined, digital identity is one’s online history – that is, it is any trail a person has left in his or her life that is now online. In academics, the issue is of digital presence is of utmost importance, as a digital identity frames one’s professional reputation, doing so by promoting and defining a person’s knowledge and research in their respective field. Written by an accomplished interdisciplinary team of scholars in library science and related fields, this unique guide addresses the development of professional identity as a continuous, dynamic process that is constantly evolving, generally starting from university study and moving through one’s professional work life. It goes without saying that building your digital identity as a researcher can be an effective way to publicize your work among your peers, but, the authors emphasize, this activity must be done carefully and skillfully. Indeed, developing these skills can forge a path to professional advancement in hiring, promotion, and tenure. Moreover, a well-designed digital presence can help build networks which can lead to collaborations, increased research, and grants. In addition, having a well-managed digital identity helps an academic engage with the public by strategically disseminating one’s knowledge to students, public, and the media. Importantly, it can also help prevent misinformation. Whether readers are new in the field of research and publishing, or have a well-established portfolio of written literature, this handy title will provide vital guidance in establishing a digital presence, covering a wide range of issues. Key topics discussed, for example, include academic digital platforms and tools to consider when using them, working with academic librarians, social media platforms, choosing digital identity management tools like Open Researcher and Contributor ID or ORCID, the importance of author metrics and the h-index, and maintaining and curating a professional website, to name just several areas discussed. An invaluable contribution to the career literature, Building Your Academic Research Digital Identity will enable readers to strategically understand all the tools, platforms, and metrics needed to establish and cultivate one’s crucially important digital profile. .

Abstract

This book is written for the many Life Science PhD students who may pursue careers outside of academic research. Even though the biggest portion of students will ultimately pursue other paths, university education trains them mostly for the academic track. Students often miss information, resources, contacts, or opportunities to explore other options. In response, the editors assembled a diverse group of authors from all fields related to Life Science research. The chapters offer a peek behind the curtain of each industry and offer guidance on how to move towards such roles. Through a high level of uniformity, students will get a plethora of career stories, each providing job opportunities, job descriptions, resources, and useful contact information. The purpose of this volume is to illustrate the many excellent opportunities that are available to life science PhDs, which will still allow them to make significant contributions to science.

Abstract

“In an increasingly complex world, the false dichotomy of working and learning is becoming more apparent. Nieves, Anderson and Huntting expertly demonstrate that this new world will require a greater emphasis on equity and increasing opportunities that expand learning and working for all. The ultimate success of today’s young learner-workers will indelibly impact their life outcomes—and our shared well-being.” — Jamie Merisotis, President & CEO, Lumina Foundation, USA In this book, we witness the transformative power of work-integrated education in unlocking doors of opportunity for young people. This book serves as a roadmap for policymakers and practitioners, illuminating pathways to dismantle systemic barriers and cultivate inclusive environments where every young person can realize their potential.” — Maria Flynn, President & CEO, Jobs for the Future, USA “The chapter on Native Hawaiians is relevant and captures the essence of the contemporary Hawaiian as they deal with historical trauma but strives to survive and excel in service to their community and family in their homeland - Hawaiʻi.” — Lui Hokoana, Chancellor and CEO, University of Hawaiʻi Maui College, USA This book builds on the success of “Working to Learn" (Palgrave Macmillan, 2020) by focusing on the future of work and how young people, especially low-income young people and young people of color, are pursuing college and career goals through work-based learning experiences, yet encountering an increasingly racially and socioeconomically stratified labor market and educational system. Through policy analysis and case studies both from US and abroad, the authors will present the argument for why these models warrant revisitation, innovation, and investment, and elevate profiles of young workers, nonprofits, corporate partners, and governments today who are using work opportunities to open doors once closed. Lisette Nieves is a Distinguished Clinical Full Professor of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development at New York University, USA. Lisette is also President of the Fund for the City of New York, USA. Noel S. Anderson is a Clinical Full Professor of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies and Executive Director of the Office of Leadership and Innovation for Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development at New York University, USA. Becca Huntting earned her doctoral degree in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development at New York University, USA. Becca is the Senior Director of Research and Data Management at CareerWise New York, USA. .

Abstract

This book unpacks the notion of pedagogy in South African technical and vocational education and training (TVET), enhancing the importance of the psychological dimension of learning. The book is premised on the idea that as stories of actual, grounded teaching and learning practices emerge from South African colleges, a coherent picture of pedagogy can be established. With chapters by practising TVET educators writing about their own work, the volume seeks to reconceptualise vocational teaching and learning processes with diversity and inclusivity in mind. The book will be of interest to students and scholars of TVET and education in South Africa, as well as South African college practitioners and policymakers.
