The integration of High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR) within Event-Driven Systems (EDS) is essential for maintaining robust, resilient, and reliable IT infrastructure. This thesis explores the strategies required to achieve HA and DR in EDS, ensuring rapid recovery from various types of failures. The central question addressed is: "What are the key components and principles required to achieve High Availability and Disaster Recovery?" In this thesis, I conducted a literature review, reviewing articles on the topic to acquire insights and understand best practices. This approach gave me a thorough understanding of the strategies and technologies necessary to effectively implement HA and DR in EDS. The thesis is structured into two main chapters. The first chapter, "High Availability in Event-Driven Systems" begins with a conceptual framework that outlines the key principles for HA. It then discusses strategies such as message queuing, event sourcing, state management, and advanced HA techniques. The second chapter, "Disaster Recovery Planning in Event-Driven Systems" covers the fundamentals of DR planning, including risk assessment, recovery objectives, and disaster recovery strategies. It then looks into implementing DR with a focus on data backup techniques, cross-region replication, and application state recovery. Key strategies for HA include decoupling components, using distributed systems to prevent single points of failure, and ensuring scalability to handle varying loads. For DR, essential strategies include ensuring event replayability, data replication and durability, and asynchronous communication. Advanced techniques like cross-region replication and application state recovery further enhance system resilience. By integrating these strategies, organizations can design EDS that maintain high performance and availability while quickly recovering from failures to ensure continuous service and business continuity.
