"Scholars and public figures alike have noted that, while the West seems to be in the throes of secularization, other puzzling developments have simultaneously taken place. Foremost among these is the recent turn toward spirituality. What does it mean to be "spiritual but not religious"? And more important, what does it mean for liberal democracies that this phenomenon has become increasingly prevalent since the 1960s? The conventional answer, espoused by most sociologists of religion, is that "spirituality" is a basically meaningless term that lacks cultural coherence or institutional support and thus holds little public significance; previous work has for the most part examined its effects on individuals or at best on the declining affiliation with religious denominations. This authoritative volume, grounded in a novel theoretical approach, radically challenges these views, demonstrating that the spiritual turn has also had a profound influence on the public sphere in a number of areas. Comprising original chapters from the leading sociologists of spirituality in North America and Western Europe including Candy Gunther Brown (Indiana), Jaime Kucinskas (Hamilton), Colin Campbell (York), and Linda Woodhead (UCL), the book makes a convincing case that Western spirituality not only signals a distinct new religious tradition but also has been increasingly institutionalized-in spheres and sites as diverse as medicine, the workplace, Silicon Valley, and political activism on both left and right. In response to environmental crises, the environmental lifestyle movement has been proposed as a promising path to a more sustainable future. However, this lifestyle is increasingly academically and publicly criticized for being embedded within and reproducing inequalities. Crucial to this entanglement of an environmental lifestyle and inequality, yet left largely unexplored, is how exactly the lifestyle is culturally shaped. Therefore, this paper studies how Instagram eco-influencers as cultural entrepreneurs shape and promote an environmental lifestyle online, and whether this is embedded in and reproduces inequalities. To do so, this study employs a critical discourse analysis to empirically study the framing and resource mobilization strategies of eco-influencers. The data is collected via a mixed-methods design that combines six interviews with 167 posts from twentyfive Instagram eco-influencers from Belgium, the Netherlands, France, and Luxembourg. The findings reveal that the environmental lifestyle is framed through “moral aestheticism”, constructed via the aestheticization, moralization and romanticization of the lifestyle. To conduct their cultural entrepreneurial work, eco-influencers primarily draw on their embodied cultural capital, combined with economic, symbolic, aesthetic, and emotional capital. This paper theorizes, then, that distinction is central to their work: not only is the environmental lifestyle presented as a distinguishing and aspirational way of life, but eco-influencers also position themselves as aspirational embodiments and competent cultural entrepreneurs of this lifestyle. However, while this distinction allows eco-influencers to take up the role of cultural entrepreneurs, and to legitimize and mainstream the environmental lifestyle, it also reproduces inequality by associating the lifestyle with a high-status taste, while reinforcing the lifestyle as a moral basis for social judgment, and by obscuring environmental practices which are not distinguishing.

This thesis, titled "Contemporary Spirituality and Religion in Turkey: A Sociological Analysis,"investigates the rise of personalised spiritual in a secular yet religious society. The research seeks to understand how spirituality is evolving as a distinct and appealing path for many individuals, especially in a context where traditional religious practices continue to hold significance. The study delves into the distinctions between spirituality and institutional religion, particularly how these concepts are understood and practiced in Turkey. It investigates the cultural and social factors driving the increasing interest in spirituality, exploring why individuals are increasingly identifying as spiritual rather than religious. Methodologically, the thesis is grounded in qualitative research, employing in-depth semi-structured interviews to gather detailed narratives from eight participants. These narratives highlight the personal turning points that lead individuals towards spirituality, the integration of spiritual beliefs into daily life, and the ways in which spirituality offers a means of personal empowerment, self-discovery, and coping with modern life's challenges. The findings of this research have significant implications, revealing that spirituality in Turkey serves as a flexible and adaptive response to the complexities of modern life. It offers individuals a personalized path to inner peace and fulfillment. By examining the rise of spirituality within the broader cultural and social context of Turkey, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of how secular and religious forces coexist and transform in non-Western societies. The thesis challenges traditional secularization theories by showing that spirituality and religion are not mutually exclusive but can evolve together, offering new ways for individuals to find meaningand purpose in their lives.

In een wereld waarin voetbalclubs niet alleen lokale fans, maar ook een wereldwijde fanbase verbinden, is de vraag hoe lokaliteit zich manifesteert bij zowel lokale als transnationale supporters actueler dan ooit. Arsenal FC, met zijn diepe wortels in Noord-Londen en zijn wereldwijde aantrekkingskracht, biedt een unieke case om deze dynamiek te verkennen. De bestaande literatuur benadrukt vaak het belang van lokaliteit, waarbij voetbalclubs fungeren als symbolen van de lokale gemeenschap. Tegelijkertijd zien we door globalisering een groeiend transnationaal fandom, waarbij fans zonder directe geografische band met de club zich toch sterk verbonden voelen. Dit spanningsveld in de literatuur – de nadruk op het lokale versus de opkomst van een wereldwijd fandom – leidt tot de centrale onderzoeksvraag van deze studie: Hoe manifesteert zich de betekenis van lokaliteit bij zowel lokale als transnationale Arsenal-fans? Arsenal FC werd gekozen als case vanwege diverse en wereldwijde fanbase, wat het mogelijk maakt om de rol van lokaliteit in een globale context te onderzoeken. De methodologie omvatte een kwalitatieve benadering, waarbij diepte-interviews met zowel lokale als transnationale fans de kern vormden van de data-verzameling. Door middel van grounded theory en thematische analyse werd de data systematisch geanalyseerd, wat leidde tot een inzichtelijke verkenning van de manier waarop lokaliteit door fans wordt ervaren en geïnterpreteerd. De analyse van de resultaten toont aan dat lokaliteit een centrale rol speelt in het Arsenal-fandom, maar dat de manier waarop dit tot uiting komt, sterk varieert tussen lokale en transnationale fans. Voor lokale fans is de fysieke nabijheid tot het stadion en Noord-Londen cruciaal, en versterkt dit hun band met de club. De historische rivaliteit met Tottenham Hotspur is hier een sprekend voorbeeld van, waarbij deze rivaliteit de lokale verbondenheid en identiteit versterkt. Voor transnationale fans daarentegen is de betekenis van lokaliteit meer symbolisch. Ondanks de fysieke afstand voelen zij een diepe emotionele band met Noord-Londen en de club, waarbij ze lokale rituelen en symbolen adopteren en integreren in hun eigen fanervaring. Dit komt onder meer tot uiting in hun waardering voor officiële merchandise, die voor hen een tastbare link vormt met Noord-Londen, en in het recreëren van lokale fanervaringen via supportersclubs. De onderzoek concludeert dat lokaliteit inderdaad een belangrijke rol speelt voor zowel lokale als transnationale Arsenal-fans, zij het op verschillende manieren. Waar lokale fans hun identiteit ontlenen aan directe geografische nabijheid en lokale interacties, geven transnationale fans hier op een voornamelijk symbolische manier invulling aan. Hierdoor wordt de betekenis van lokaliteit breder dan alleen de fysieke nabijheid en omvat het ook de rituelen en symbolen die de fanidentiteit vormgeven, ongeacht waar de fans zich bevinden.

Deze paper tracht de bottom-up relatie tussen sport en politiek bloot te leggen. Meer specifiek gaat ze op zoek naar de politieke betekenisgeving van skateboarders ten gevolge van hun affiniteit met het urbanisme, gelijkaardig aan de politieke betekisgeving van de stedelijke sociale bewegingen.
