Our modern society is still rooted in the ancient faith of Christianity, represented by the Church. The narratives and laws of the Bible provide a platform for discussing topics such as authority, human rights, equality, and inclusivity. In the shifting landscape of the 21st century, the Church’s doctrines often seem outdated when faced with contemporary challenges. Is the monistic worldview, predominantly represented by the Church, still relevant in our more complex and dualistic world? Through literal studies on topics such as the origin of books and the dogmatic dissemination of information and knowledge, alongside artistic exploration, this thesis seeks to answer whether new forms of technology can help us visualise an underlying connection between religious history and contemporary issues. Utilising the technology of artificial intelligence, we create modern and personal reinterpretations of Biblical parables and scenes. Ultimately, by focusing on the concept of sin and the paradox of being a woman in the Church, we aim to unify the sacred and the sinful.

This thesis researches the intersection of grief and design, exploring how sentiment can be infused into material objects to provide solace and emotional connection. It investigates how tangible mementos can trigger memories and facilitate reflection on deceased loved ones. The thesis proposes a model of affective product experience grounded in cognitive psychology, emphasizing the importance of considering both physical form and reflective aspects in design. Personalization and customization are key in enhancing emotional resonance, with data visualization being the tool for bridging personal data and physical mementos. The research culminates in the creation of a tangible object: a silver pendant infused with personal data from social media platforms, designed to evoke the specific emotion of consolation, offering new avenues for supporting individuals in times of loss. The thesis concludes by emphasizing the potential of consoling mementos to inspire further exploration in the fields of emotive design and art, encouraging creators to tap into the power of emotion in their work to contribute to discussions on grief, memory, and materiality.

All good or bad events we experience or witness are carved into our memory and in some time periods those memories were transformed into motifs. Those motifs were then used in tapestry, more specifically in Anatolian kelims. This research consists of a case study of a specific kelim. To analyse which motives and colours were used and how they correlate with specific emotions and stories, a small analysis of colours and motives took place with the help of an experienced weaver who shared his opinion. Afterwards, a fresh and new life was given to the motives without changing their meaning. A historian was interviewed to help me understand why modernising symbols and creating a new setting could help to interpret them better. People with a Turkish background also gave their opinions on kelims. Different tests and sketches were made to make the final design. The goal of this project was to design a 3D carpet with modernised motifs with the help of AI as tool, while still maintaining the design principle of the Anatolian kelim.

In this design thesis, we will dive into the complexities of human memory, that shifted from lived memory – memories that exist in our imagination, constantly evolving – to archived memory – materialized in fixed forms such as photos. We explore the interplay between memory, technology, and identity, within the context of our digital era. Employing a Reseach through Design approach, consisting out of an autoethnography, prototyping, and conducting an exhibition, we aim to portray the ever-evolving nature of human memory, although it is a very personal experience. Through our experimentation, we aim to contribute to a deeper understanding of these two types of memories and their coexistence in shaping our memory today. Highlighting the complexities, we offer insights into how our perceptions of self and others are shaped by the dynamic interplay between technology and memory.
