Parallèlement à une intense activité de critique et théoricien du cinéma, Jean-Louis Comolli (1941-2022) a réalisé une cinquantaine de films entre 1967 et 2019. Courts ou longs, de fiction ou documentaires, pour le cinéma ou pour la télévision, ses films révèlent tous une grande attention au monde, qu'ils traitent de politique, d'histoire ou d'art. Des cinéastes québécois rencontrés en 1967 pour son premier film à Nicolas Philibert interrogé en 2019 pour son dernier, Jean-Louis Comolli n'aura eu de cesse de donner la parole à ses interlocuteurs, de les écouter, de leur donner la réplique. C'est ce qu'universitaires, cinéastes et amis de Jean-Louis Comolli explorent dans les textes et entretiens ici réunis, avec la volonté d'éclairer une filmographie essentielle, encore trop peu diffusée.
