At a time when uneven power dynamics are high on development actors’ agenda, this book will be an important contribution to researchers and practitioners working on innovation in development and civil society. While there is much discussion of localization, decolonization and ‘shifting power’ in civil society collaborations in development, the debate thus far centers on the aid system. This book directs attention to CSOs as drivers of development in various contexts that we refer to as the Global South. This book take a transformative stance, reimagining roles, relations and processes. It does so from five complementary angles: (1) Southern CSOs reclaiming the lead, 2) displacement of the North–South dyad, (3) Southern-centred questions, (4) new roles for Northern actors, and (5) new starting points for collaboration. The book relativizes international collaboration, asking INGOs, Northern CSOs, and their donors to follow Southern CSOs’ leads, recognizing their contextually geared perspectives, agendas, resources, capacities, and ways of working. Based in 19 empirically grounded chapters, the book also offers an agenda for further research, design, and experimentation.Emphasizing the need to ‘Start from the South’ this book thus re-imagines and re-centers Civil Society collaborations in development, offering Southern-centred ways of understanding and developing relations, roles, and processes, in theory and practice. The Open Access version of this book, available at http://www.taylorfrancis.com, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND) 4.0 license. Several years ago in Rajasthan, an 18-year-old woman was burned on her husband's funeral pyre & thus became sati. Before ascending the pyre, she was expected to deliver both blessings & curses: blessings to guard her family & clan for many generations, & curses to prevent anyone from thwarting her desire to die. Sati also means blessing & curse in a broader sense. To those who revere it, sati symbolizes ultimate loyalty & self-sacrifice. It often figures near the core of a Hindu identity that feels embattled in a modern world. Yet to those who deplore it, sati is a curse, a violation of every woman's womanhood. It is murder mystified, & as such, the symbol of precisely what Hinduism should not be. In this volume a group of leading scholars consider the many meanings of sati: in India & the West; in literature, art, & opera; in religion, psychology, economics, & politics.

"From Joan of Arc to Queen Elizabeth I, to Harriet Tubman and Susan B. Anthony, to Sally Ride and Jennifer Aniston, history is full of women without children. Some chose to forgo reproduction in order to pursue intellectually satisfying work-a tension noted by medieval European nuns, 1970s women's liberationists, and modern professionals alike. Some refused to bring children into a world beset by famine, pollution, or climate change. For others, childlessness was involuntary: infertility has been a source of anguish all the way back to the biblical Hannah. But most women without children didn't--and don't--perceive themselves as either proudly childfree or tragically barren. Seventeenth century French colonists in North America, struggling without the kind of community support they enjoyed in their mother country, found themselves postponing children until a better moment that, for many of them, never arrived. It is women like these-whose ambivalence throughout their child-bearing years inevitably makes their choice for them-that make up the vast majority of millennials without children in the United States. Drawing on deep archival research and her own experience as a woman without children, historian Peggy O'Donnell shows modern women who are struggling to build lives and to figure out whether those lives allow for children that they are part of a long historical lineage-and that they are certainly not alone"--

"Financing development requires access to financial resources. The AIIB Yearbook of International Law Volume 4 explores the role of international organizations in the development of local capital markets, their legal status under public international law and selected domestic jurisdictions, as well as innovations in resource mobilization and organizational structures. The volume collects insights from distinguished professionals who shed new light on the question of how international development organizations can raise the funds they need to tackle global challenges like the climate crisis, digitalization, or sustainable development. Only by addressing these challenges will international development organizations be able to fully deliver on their development mandate"--

This textbook explores ethical issues for not-for-profit and non-governmental organizations, providing discussion-oriented cases for NFP and NGP practitioners. The book begins with an introduction to professional ethics as practiced in industry, not-for-profits and NGO’s. Attention is paid both to classical ethical theories and contemporary variants. Then, combining that theory with an introduction to the morally unique facets of the NFP and NGO landscape, it offers a series of cases which pertain to the underlying theoretical substrate. The reader will find a blend of theory and application within the text as well as guided assignment prompts. Themes covered include board relationships, staff management, work with vulnerable populations, financial transparency, Human Resources ethics and ethical dilemmas unique to international operations. Craig Hanson, Ph.D. currently serves as Associate Professor and Director of the International Development program at Palm Beach Atlantic University, USA. He is an applied scholar and researcher with expertise at the intersection of philosophical ideas and the economy of human behavior. Using this expertise, he has engaged in a career of articulating new solutions to old problems in international development. He has lent his expertise to a large number of projects throughout the world – from Latin America to Southeast Asia – ranging from small faith-based endeavors to large public-private initiatives. A guiding principle of these activities has been the conviction that development requires more than just one focal point, be it religious, governmental, or in the private sector. Only through the effective intersection of these often competing sets of interests can forward progress be made in those places that need it most. He has lectured at institutions across the United States as well as Europe and Africa. He speaks, lectures, and writes in French and English and has conversational competence in a variety of other languages from Spanish to tribal languages of West Africa. He is currently engaged in a variety of projects related to the intersection of the public sector and private interests as well as the ever changing landscape of American Philanthropy.
