El viajero contemporáneo no brinda mapas a su regreso. Lejos de un afán descriptivo o documental, en las primeras décadas del siglo XXI el viaje literario no solo se nutre temáticamente del desplazamiento sino que además lo encarna con la constante variación de sus estructuras. En un contexto de profundo calado de la retórica del viaje, este ensayo parte de una reflexión sobre los conceptos de movilidad y mutación que definen a un tiempo el presente y las obras literarias que cifran su existencia en la superación de unas fronteras que son geográficas, pero también creativas. Esta naturaleza propicia su devenir genérico, dando lugar a las derivas o desviaciones del relato híbrido respecto al paradigma tradicional. En el curso de estas derivas se identifican, además, tres vi(r)ajes genéricos que implican a la forma del relato y en los que el viaje se acerca a las formas híbridas de la crónica, el dietario y el ensayo. Situado en la encrucijada que forman los vi(r)ajes y los tres grandes territorios donde se despliega la escritura en movimiento —el espacio por el que transita, la experiencia identitaria que supone y la literatura con la que dialoga—, el corpus analizado en este volumen da cuenta de la diversidad editorial que atañe al relato de viaje así como de la heterogeneidad formal de unos textos que prefieren el trayecto al destino, el estilo fragmentario y digresivo a la exhaustiva descripción. No esperes de mí los mapas. Las derivas del viaje en la literatura hispánica del siglo XXI explora, en fin, los relatos del viajero contemporáneo que acomoda su condición errante a la escritura.

"Reposant sur l'exploitation du riche fonds de la BnF, cette étude rouvre le dossier de Maurice Barrès (1862-1923), écrivain aujourd'hui relativement tombé dans l'oubli. Les écrits de voyage, articles, essais, romans ou nouvelles, permettent d'aborder l'auteur dans toute sa complexité et ses contradictions, ainsi que de le replacer dans une histoire littéraire allant de Chateaubriand à Gide et incluant bien des journalistes contemporains peu connus. 1860–2020 invites readers to explore Mongolia as an important cultural space for Western travelers and their audiences over three historical eras. Travelers have framed their experiences and observations through imaginative geographies and Orientalizing discourses, fixing Mongolia as a peripheral, timeless, primitive, and parochial place. Readers can examine the travelers’ literary and rhetorical strategies as they make themselves more credible and authoritative and as they identify themselves with Mongolians and Mongolian culture or, conversely, distance themselves. In this book, readers can also approach travel writing from the perspective of women travelers, Mongolian socialist intellectuals, twenty-first-century travelers, and a Han Chinese writer, Jiang Rong, who promotes cultural harmony yet anticipates the disappearance of Mongolian culture in China.

This is the first critical and theoretically grounded book-length study of Hajj literature (written texts about the experience of the Hajj) and Hajj practices of Bosnian Muslims. It redefines the ways pilgrimage can be understood and offers new methods for investigating the meaning and importance of Hajj for generations of premodern and modern believers. It also throws light on Balkan communities previously ignored by modern scholarship in Islamic, religious, and area studies. Breaking with the predominant academic trends of focusing on nationalism and ethnic conflict in the region, it instead puts the spotlight on the richness of texts, and visual and archival material, and focuses on genres that challenge the established literary canons.

"A Woman’s Empire explores a new dimension of Russian imperialism: women actively engaged in the process of late imperial expansion. The book investigates how women writers, travellers, and scientists who journeyed to and beyond Central Asia participated in Russia’s “civilizing” and colonizing mission, utilizing newly found educational opportunities while navigating powerful discourses of femininity as well as male-dominated science. Katya Hokanson shows how these Russian women resisted domestic roles in a variety of ways. The women writers include a governor general’s wife, a fiction writer who lived in Turkestan, and a famous Theosophist, among others. They make clear the perspectives of the ruling class and outline the special role of women as describers and recorders of information about local women, and as builders of “civilized” colonial Russian society with its attendant performances and social events. Although the bulk of their writings, drawings, and photography is primarily noteworthy for its cultural and historical value, A Woman’s Empire demonstrates how they also add dimension and detail to the story of Russian imperial expansion and illuminates how women encountered, imagined, and depicted Russia’s imperial Other during this period."--
