Mathematical modelling and computer simulations are playing a crucial role in the solution of the complex problems arising in the field of biomedical sciences and provide a support to clinical and experimental practices in an interdisciplinary framework. Indeed, the development of mathematical models and efficient numerical simulation tools is of key importance when dealing with such applications. Moreover, since the parameters in biomedical models have peculiar scientific interpretations and their values are often unknown, accurate estimation techniques need to be developed for parameter identification against the measured data of observed phenomena. In the light of the new challenges brought by the biomedical applications, computational mathematics paves the way for the validation of the mathematical models and the investigation of control problems. The volume hosts high-quality selected contributions containing original research results as well as comprehensive papers and survey articles including prospective discussion focusing on some topical biomedical problems. It is addressed, but not limited to: research institutes, academia, and pharmaceutical industries.

This book offers an in-depth analysis of musical variation through a systematic approach, heavily influenced by the principles of Grundgestalt and developed variations, both created by the Austrian composer Arnold Schoenberg (1874-1951). The author introduces a new transformational-derivative model and the theory that supports it, specifically crafted for the examination of tonal music. The idea for this book emerged during a sabbatical at Columbia University, while the content is the product of extensive research conducted at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, resulting in the development of the Model of Derivative Analysis. This model places emphasis on the connections between musical entities rather than viewing them as separate entities. As a case study, the Intermezzo in A Major Op.118/2 by Brahms is selected for analysis. The author's goal is to provide a formal and structured approach while maintaining the text's readability and appeal for both musicians and mathematicians in the field of music theory. The book concludes with the author's recommendations for further research.

This book starts with an introduction to quantitative texture analysis (QTA), which adopts conventions (active rotations, definition of Euler angles, Wigner D-functions) that conform to those of the present-day mathematics and physics literature. Basic concepts (e.g., orientation; orientation distribution function (ODF), orientation density function, and their relationship) are made precise through their mathematical definition. Parts II and III delve deeper into the mathematical foundations of QTA, where the important role played by group representations is emphasized. Part II includes one chapter on generalized QTA based on the orthogonal group, and Part III one on tensorial Fourier expansion of the ODF and tensorial texture coefficients. This work will appeal to students and practitioners who appreciate a precise presentation of QTA through a unifying mathematical language, and to researchers who are interested in applications of group representations to texture analysis. Previously published in the Journal of Elasticity, Volume 149, issues 1-2, April, 2022.

The volume collects several contributions to the INDAM workshop Mathematical Methods for Objects Reconstruction: from 3D Vision to 3D Printing held in Rome, February, 2021. The goal of the workshop was to discuss new methods and conceptual structures for managing these challenging problems. The chapters reflect this goal and the authors are academic researchers and some experts from industry working in the areas of 3D modeling, computer vision, 3D printing and/or developing new mathematical methods for these problems. The contributions present methodologies and challenges raised by the emergence of large-scale 3D reconstruction applications and low-cost 3D printers. The volume collects complementary knowledges from different areas of mathematics, computer science and engineering on research topics related to 3D printing, which are, so far, widely unexplored. Young researchers and future scientific leaders in the field of 3D data acquisition, 3D scene reconstruction, and 3D printing software development will find an excellent introduction to these problems and to the mathematical techniques necessary to solve them.

This book contains a large variety of intriguing puzzles with detailed ingenious solutions generally not found elsewhere. This book is a great treasure for everybody who enjoys the beauty of fascinating world of recreational mathematics. Puzzles in the book can be browsed at random as these are not grouped in any orderly manner. Apart from puzzle enthusiasts and mathlovers, the book is considered of immense value for aspirants of Math Olympiad, CAT/MBA and job interviews of big companies like Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Yahoo, NVidia, Oracle, Adobe, Morgan Stanley, Bloomberg, etc. The title of puzzles has been suitably framed. Repetition of similar type of puzzles has been avoided to keep the book in a concise form. However, important aspects of similar puzzles, if any, have been covered in comments section. This book is divided into four chapters (Chaps. 1–4): Chapter 1 contains 25 short riddles and brainteasers. These puzzles vary from simple but tricky to challenging ones. Chapter 2 contains detailed solutions to all the short riddles and brainteasers given in Chapter 1. Chapter 3 contains 125 creative puzzles of varying difficulty level covering arithmetic and algebraic puzzles on clock, calendar, weight, age and digital puzzles, geometric puzzles, logical reasoning puzzles, and combinatorial puzzles, match puzzles and game puzzles like “kaun banega crorepati” (who will become a Decamillionaire), new year winner, winning numbers, etc. Some famous and old puzzles like Cheryl’s birthday, Bachets weight, liquid decanting, crossing bridge/river/desert, etc., have also been included so that readers can find all types of puzzles at one place. Only basic mathematics is required to solve these puzzles, but most of these puzzles are tricky and can be simplified by ingenious ideas. Chapter 4 contains detailed solutions to all the creative puzzles given in Chapter 3.
