Tariq Ali s'attaque dans ce livre à l'image, toujours célébrée, de Churchill. Dans sa longue carrière de journaliste, d'aventurier, d'homme d'État et d'historien, l'impérialisme et l'anticommunisme constituent le fil directeur, avec des conséquences ravageuses. Jeune homme, Churchill participe aux batailles en Afrique du Sud, au Soudan et en Inde, qui visent à maintenir l'ordre impérial. À la tête de la marine lors de la Première Guerre mondiale, il est responsable d'une série d'erreurs catastrophiques conduisant à des morts par milliers. Ses efforts pour écraser les nationalistes irlandais sont autant de plaies qui ne sont toujours pas cicatrisées. Endossant le rôle de défenseur de son pays pendant la Deuxième Guerre mondiale, la période la plus vénérée de sa carrière, il n'a pas hésité à sacrifier des populations : Tariq Ali évoque l'attaque brutale contre la résistance grecque, la famine au Bengale qui a coûté la vie à plus de 3 millions d'Indiens, l'assaut aérien contre les civils à Dresde et Hambourg, et son insistance sur l'utilisation d'armes nucléaires au Japon. Comme leader une fois la paix revenue, alors même que l'Empire s'écroulait, Churchill n'a jamais renoncé à sa philosophie impériale empreinte de racisme et il est l'un des architectes du monde dans lequel nous vivons aujourd'hui. Son bilan est terrible, amplement documenté dans l'acte d'accusation de Tariq Ali qui déroule en contrechamps le récit d'un demi-siècle de résistance et de luttes pour l'émancipation.

Comparing Britain and Japan reveals leadership trends that might otherwise go unobserved. The book addresses questions important to aspiring politicians as well as scholars, including: What accounts for the short tenure of most Japanese prime ministers? Does comparison with Japan explain the rapid turnover in British prime ministers since 2016? How is the influence of party factions on prime ministerial power evolving in Japan? Are British political parties more factional than commonly acknowledged? And how do changes in media technology affect leadership opportunities and constraints? The book draws on the author’s experience as a political researcher in both the British and Japanese parliaments and on interviews with over 40 politicians and political journalists working in both countries. Tina Burrett is Associate Professor of Political Science at Sophia University, Japan. She is the co-editor of The Routledge Handbook of Trauma in East Asia (2023), and Press Freedom in Contemporary Asia (2019) and author of Television and Presidential Power in Putin’s Russia (2011). She has worked in the British, Canadian and Japanese parliaments.
