Abstract

"This edited collection addresses the proliferation in recent years of community-engaged archives projects in the context of higher education. Featuring perspectives from educators, archivists (both community- and institutionally-affiliated), and undergraduates involved in efforts to deconstruct and transform the institutional authority of the archive, the volume details new roles for archives in undergraduate pedagogy and new roles for undergraduates in archives. While there has long been a place for archival exploration in undergraduate education, especially primary source analysis of items curated by archivists and educators, the models offered here engage students not only in analyzing collections, but also in the manifold challenges of building, stewarding, and communicating about collections. In transforming what archives are to undergraduate education, such projects as are profiled here transform the authority of the archive, as students and community partners claim powers to curate and create history. The volume is informed and inspired by recent scholarship in critical digital archives, Critical Archival Studies at large, and community-based archives. Contributions to this volume represent a wide range of institutions, from small liberal arts colleges to HBCUs to Ivy Leagues to large research institutions. Not all the projects detailed in this collection are primarily affiliated with academic institutions. Chapters focused on community- rather than campus-based archives projects address how they have involved significant undergraduate labor and leadership, and offer insight into the interaction between community archives and academic institutions. The assignments, projects, and initiatives described across this collection are fundamentally concerned with the challenge to model digital archival collections so as to center individual and community voices that are historically under-engaged in the archives. To address this challenge, contributors describe various approaches to substantively, often radically, redistribute archival resources and authority"--

Abstract

60 years after the end of the Second World War former forced laborers were interviewed in Russia. Which discursive patterns are found in their memories? Which emotions prevail and why? What kind of role does gender play? Which kind of psychological resources were disposable to these people? The book offers deep insight into the social and individual dynamics of totalitarian regimes. Among the results of the study is the observation that there exists a continuity from the USSR to contemporary Russia that is reflected in the book's title: stigma and silence.

Abstract

"This book introduces business historians to oral history methodologies and approaches. Using four distinct oral history case studies to explore ideas of disruption and continuity in business history over the second half of the twentieth century, Robert Crawford and Matthew Bailey demonstrate how critical engagement with oral history approaches serves to enhance and enliven business history as well as its relationship with other historical fields. The focus on disruption is used to encompass a broad set of processes such as technological change, the impact of external forces, informal business networks, social constructions of gender, knowledge transfer, firm adaptability and cultural change. The use of oral histories to interpret responses to disruption in the past, and to explore the features characterising business continuity, provides an opportunity to consider the human dimensions, subjective experiences and personal insights of workplace, firm and industry change. It also sheds light on the ways that people and firms respond to disruptive forces through innovation and adaptation - both successfully and unsuccessfully. This succinct and accessible account is essential reading for business historians with little experience in using oral history, as well as those looking to gain deeper insights from their oral history data"--

Abstract

"For all its orality, oral history has a long-standing, closely entwined relationship with writing. Sound Writing considers the interplay between sound recordings and written literature, looking back to antiquity while focusing on the nineteenth- to the twenty-first centuries. It also refers to a dream of sound writing itself, enabling voices to reach readers directly, cutting out the need for authorial mediation. Oral histories are nevertheless actively mediated, often turned into and received as written texts. There can be value in transforming spoken oral histories in print or on screen, not least in order to make them 'readable' for wider audiences. Indeed, such re-creations can be worthy and wonderful works of scholarship and art--and this book explores a wide range of different forms and media (like the polyphonic novel, and hyperlinked websites) which can most effectively convey speakers' narratives on their own terms--but there is also, always the danger of speakers' voices being distorted or lost in the process of mediation. This book examines how oral histories are co-created, by speakers, by authors, and also by readers. It considers how oral history can inform our understandings of authorship and reading, to reconceive and query their potential as creative, multiple, collective, and activist. Finally, it reflects on the role of authorship in the academy"--

Abstract

This book proposes the concept of "fictional contamination" to capture the fact that fictionalization and literary complexity can be found across different kinds of narrative. Exploring conversational storytelling in oral history and other interviews from socionarratological perspectives, the book systematically discusses key narrative features such as story templates, dialogue, double deixis, focalization or perspective-taking and mind representation as well as special narrative forms including second-person narration and narratives of vicarious experience. These features and forms attest to storytellers’ linguistic creativity and serve the function of involving listeners by making stories more interesting. Shared by fictional and conversational narratives at a basic level, they can bring conversational stories closer to fiction and potentially compromise their credibility if used extensively. Detailed analyses of broad-ranging examples are undertaken against a rich narrative-theoretical background drawn from the fields of narratology, linguistics, oral history, life storytelling, psychology and philosophy. The book is of interest to scholars and students working in these fields and anyone fascinated by the richness of conversational storytelling.

When fans become researchers, crossing boundaries is part of it. Citizen science makes it possible to change sides and perspectives, which can lead to productive exchanges of knowledge and experience in scholarship and society. This volume discusses the possibilities and limits of citizen science in media and cultural studies, and is the first to bring together the two disciplines of citizen science and fan research.

Abstract

This volume contains extensive professional, conceptual, and social-biographical interviews with experts of a special kind: actors of the second hierarchy who were responsible for GDR history propaganda and who had a lot of influence and impact. These interviews, which were conducted about 25 years ago, testify to an epoch and help to explain how history propaganda worked as a system.

Abstract

This book analyzes two Romanian villages – 2 Mai and Vama Veche – as spaces of relative freedom during the last decades of socialist rule. This microhistorical study refutes simplistic views of the communist past which focus on political figures and events, and instead explores ordinary people and everyday life. Taking a multidisciplinary approach, it considers a broad range of sources, including official Communist Party documents, secret police files, personal memoirs, oral history interviews, ethnographic films, songs, and artistic performances. This book intertwines three narrative threads: that of the visitors (mainly members of the Romanian intelligentsia, young people, and hippies); that of the local inhabitants; and that of 'authority' (local and central state agents actively engaged in surveillance and supervision). In doing so, it interrogates the spectrum of consent/dissent and resistance/collaboration hitherto neglected in scholarship.
