Abstract

Since the 1980s, the United States has regressed to a level of economic inequality not seen since the Gilded Age in the late nineteenth century. At the same time, technological innovation has transformed society, and a core priority of public policy has been promoting innovation. What is the relationship between economic inequality and technological change?Mordecai Kurz develops a comprehensive integrated theory of the dynamics of market power and income inequality. He shows that technological innovations are not simply sources of growth and progress: they sow the seeds of market power. In a free market economy with intellectual property rights, firms’ control over technology enables them to expand, attain monopoly power, and earn exorbitant profits. Competition among innovators does not eliminate market power because technological competition is different from standard competition; it results in only one or two winners. Kurz provides a pioneering analysis grounded on quantifying technological market power and its effects on inequality, innovation, and economic growth. He outlines what causes market power to rise and fall and details its macroeconomic and distributional consequences.Kurz demonstrates that technological market power tends to rise, increasing inequality of income and wealth. Unchecked inequality threatens the foundations of democracy: public policy is the only counterbalancing force that can restrain corporate power, attain more egalitarian distribution of wealth, and make democracy compatible with capitalism. Presenting a new paradigm for understanding today’s vast inequalities, this book offers detailed proposals to redress them by restricting corporate mergers and acquisitions, reforming patent law, improving the balance of power in the labor market, increasing taxation, promoting upward mobility, and stabilizing the middle class.

Abstract

"The reader may benefit from my explanation of the key turning points in my own thinking, during the six years of research. Ever since my graduate studies at Yale, the quest for a better understanding of the process of economic growth has been an important part of my research. Much of the work on economic growth in the post war period was conducted under the assumption of perfect competition. Paul Romer was among those who demonstrated that one cannot study economic growth and technological innovations within the framework of a competitive model of an economy. This observation led him to concentrate on the effects of R&D and intentional inventions on the rate of growth, but my conclusion was different. It led me to the first, central, theme of this book: it follows from the observation that once technological inventions are introduced, firms with different technological knowledge have different market positions and the vision of small, equal opportunity, firms is not applicable"--

Abstract

In the early 20th century, business elites, trade associations, wealthy powerbrokers, and media allies set out to build a new American orthodoxy: down with "big government" and up with unfettered markets. With startling archival evidence, Oreskes and Conway document campaigns to rewrite textbooks, combat unions, and defend child labor. They detail the ploys that turned hardline economists Friedrich von Hayek and Milton Friedman into household names; recount the libertarian roots of the Little House on the Prairie books; and tune into the General Electric-sponsored TV show that beamed free-market doctrine to millions and launched Ronald Reagan's political career.

Abstract

This book aims to reconstruct the activities of enterprises and individuals in one developing country (Hungary), within and across four politico-economic domains (agriculture, construction, commerce, and manufacturing), from the aftermath of the 1956 revolt through extensive reforms emphasizing profits more than ideology so as to provide abundant consumer goods. It provides hundreds of grounded, granular stories for reflection, as reported by actors and direct observers, ranging from innovation and improvisation to obstruction, failure, and fraud. Further, it offers an otherwise-unobtainable close encounter with another world, familiar in some respects while amazingly peculiar in others. The social history of enterprise and work in postwar Central European nations “building socialism” has long been underdeveloped. Through extensive macro-level research on planning and policy in Hungary, Poland, Czechoslovakia, and other Bloc countries, a grand narrative has been framed: reconstruction and breakneck industrialization under Soviet tutelage; then eventual mismanagement, stagnation and crisis, leading to collapse. This successor volume to an earlier study of the 1945–57 period seeks to explore what socialism actually looked like to those sustaining (or enduring} it as they faced forward into an unknowable future, to assess how and where it did (or didn’t) work, and to recount how ordinary people responded to its opportunities and constraints. This study will appeal to readers interested in a understanding how businesses worked day-to-day in a planned economy, how enterprise practices and technological strategies shifted during the first postwar generation, how managers and technicians learned by doing, how peasants began to farm cooperatively, how organizations improvised and adapted, how political purity and practical expertise contended for control, and how controversies and contradiction shaped a deeply flawed project to “build socialism.” Philip Scranton is University Board of Governors Professor Emeritus, History of Industry and Technology, at Rutgers University, USA.. His publications include nineteen books and 80+ scholarly articles, multiple contributions to exhibition catalogs, and numerous reviews of books and conferences.

Abstract

Elite philanthropy has produced countless essential features of modern life. Today, for-profit philanthropic innovations like donor-advised funds threaten its future. In For-Profit Philanthropy, Dana Brakman Reiser and Steven A. Dean reveal that philanthropy law has operated as strategic compromise, binding ordinary Americans and elites together in a common purpose. The authors start with an overview of the size and role of the philanthropic sector in the United States and then discuss changes in the regulatory environment that has facilitated new forms of philanthropic organizations. Private ordering, targeted regulation, or a new strategic bargain could strike a modern balance, preserving the benefits of the Grand Bargain's partnership between the modest and the mighty, and this book offers a detailed roadmap to show how it can be accomplished.
