"This book offers an efficient set of step-by-step tips and overarching lessons about how to gather useful, meaningful, and socially-informed data about clients' experiences in architecture and interior design professions. In this guide, author Michelle Janning helps the design professional conduct ongoing evaluation of design projects, create useful pre- and post-design evaluations, frame effective questions for improved future design, involve various stakeholders in the research process, and focus on responsible and evidence-based user-centered design to improve the relationship between design and people's experiences. Examining a variety of both large- and small-scale project examples from different institutional realms, including healthcare sites, schools, residences, eating establishments, museums and theaters, this book highlights the overlap in these types of projects, but also the differences between project sizes that may impact the methods used in any given project. It also offers tools for how to communicate design success to audiences that include potential clients, occupants, and other designers. A Guide to Socially-Informed Research for Architects and Designers is a go-to reference for design professionals interested in using accessible social scientific methods to gather essential and practical information from people who occupy the spaces they design, and to do so in an ethical, inclusive, and socially-informed way in order to enhance social sustainability in the built environment"--

The architect's role is constantly adapting. Throughout history it has shifted significantly, shaped by social, cultural, technological and economic forces. The very definition of what an architect is and does has evolved over time from lead builder or master mason to principal designer. A collaborative and reactive profession, it is inextricably linked to the power of the patron, whether the client is an influential and affluent individual or a political, commercial, civic or religious organisation. From Ancient Egypt, where architects were members of the ruling class, tied into the running of the empire, to the 21st century when questions are being raised about the future of the profession, this book, with its engaging narrative, explores the constant threads that remain as the profession adapts. While architects are no longer deified, their ability to imagine a new impending reality in built form implies a visionary dimension to their work. By focusing on both the practicalities of the profession and the more intangible motivations behind design - humans' need to make a mark upon their surroundings - this volume provides a critical overview of over 3000 years of practice and education. Looking at the key questions of where the architectural profession originated in the Western tradition, why it is, how it is today and where it might be going next, the authors postulate that architects' ability to adapt and reinvent themselves in the past will stand them in good stead for the uncertainties of the future.

Bilingual edition (English/German) / Zweisprachige Ausgabe (deutsch/englisch) Whoever builds is inevitably confronted with a jungle of different positions, all with one thing in common: they are all the views of professionals. As a discipline, architecture occupies a special role. It is a profession itself, and one which relates to numerous other professions and integrates them into its practice of planning and building. GAM 19 interrogates the complex constellations and various semantic meanings of professionalism in architecture. How have the professional foundations of the discipline shifted over time due to economic, ecological, or societal changes, and how do today’s architects engage with them? What is there to be learned from all the hybrid forms in which professional procedures are circumvented by unprofessional processes in order to produce hitherto unknown results? GAM 19 takes on the task of analyzing and re-evaluating architecture’s occupational profile, providing a platform for a diverse range of players to reflect on the concept of professionalism in the context of their architectural practice and to identify its contemporary manifestations. From their Dublin-based studio, Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara – Grafton Architects – rethink urban landscapes and study the relevance of contemporary architecture. Over more than forty years of practice, the studio has completed, in Ireland and internationally, a body of work that has merited the most prestigious architectural distinctions, including the Pritzker Prize (2020), the RIBA Gold Medal (2020), the Mies van der Rohe Award (2022), and their appointment as curators of the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2018. Coherent and essential, bold and vigorous, the buildings by Grafton Architects are born of critical reflection and sensitive dialogue with the existing context. This approach is reflected in the sixteen works and projects included in this monograph, organized into four sections and preceded by a text in which the architects themselves express their interests and concerns. An introductory essay by Stanislaus von Moos analyzes the intellectual gravitas and spatial ambition of office; and as a coda, the essay and four projects that compose ‘Fragments of the Future’ invite to explore the new path the office will take in the coming years.
