Abstract

Abstract

This book offers a comprehensive introduction to medio-translatology, including its historical and literary setting, its core concept, and its practice and theory. Medio-translatology, inspired by scholarship in comparative literature and the “cultural turn” in Western translation studies, has tackled many issues which previously went unnoticed or were ignored in traditional translation studies in China; it falls within the scope of literary studies and cultural studies, extending beyond the confines of language and treating literary translations and translating as historical facts. Emerging from comparative literature, medio-translatology looks at literary translation from a new and broader perspective, and explains, with illustrative and compelling examples, that literary translation is “an act of creative treason.” The originality of this approach is also evident in its distinguishing between the history of translated literature and the history of literary translation, as well as in its addressing the nature and status of translated literature. The Chinese edition of this book, being the first of its kind and well received in China, has been hailed as a milestone in exploring translation studies in the context of comparative literature in Chinese academia, and it introduces to students and researchers alike a wide range of new thoughts and ideas.

Abstract

What is the value of conversation measured by? Are there more valuable and inferior types of conversation? What role do the contents, the people, and the circumstances play? Do times and epochs shape their own conversations? Conversation norms from handbooks as well as conversations reproduced in texts or reconstructed from texts shed light on these questions. The contributions in this volume are grouped around conceptual questions, specific contexts such as the salon and the table conversation, bring studies on individual literary texts and cover the European cultural history from Plato to the 20th century. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence. A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content.

Abstract

Abstract

Adolescence is a phase of transition, change and upheaval. These processes are often translated into movements through space in literary representations. The narrated space is to be read in its construction and semantics as a complex symbol carrier that is able to connect different dimensions with one another. With reference to cultural-scientific spatial theories, the study develops a methodical model to analyze current youth novels from a topographical perspective and thus to discuss the interweaving of space, movement and growing up. This book is a translation of the original German 1st edition Räume der Adoleszenz by Anna Stemmann, published by J.B Metzler, part of Springer Nature in 2019. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation. Springer Nature works continuously to further the development of tools for the production of books and on the related technologies to support the authors.

Abstract

Many metal songs incorporate poetry into their lyrics using a broad array of techniques, both textual and musical. This book develops a novel adaptation, appropriation, and quotation taxonomy that both expands our knowledge of how poetry is used in metal music and is useful for scholars across adaptation studies broadly. The text follows both a quantitative and a qualitative approach. It identifies 384 metal songs by 224 bands with intertextual ties to 146 poems written by fifty-one different poets, with a special focus on Edgar Allan Poe, John Milton's Paradise Lost and the work of WWI's War Poets. This analysis of transformational mechanisms allows poetry to find an afterlife in the form of metal songs and sheds light on both the adaptation and appropriation process and on the semantic shifts occasioned by the recontextualisation of the poems into the metal music culture. Some musicians reuse – and sometimes amplify – old verses related to politics and religion in our present times; others engage in criticism or simple contradiction. In some cases, the bands turn the abstract feelings evoked by the poems into concrete personal experiences. The most adventurous recraft the original verses by changing the point of view of either the poetic voice or the addressed actors, altering the vocaliser of the narrative or the gender of the protagonists. These mechanisms help metal musicians make the poems their own and adjust them to their artistic needs so that the resulting product is consistent with the expectations of the metal music culture.

Abstract

“Hurray for this volume!! Breaking away from the familiar ground of Fantastical Anglophone texts read by English-language scholars, the essays here show the much needed glocality of contemporary scholarship. The first half of the essays probe the generic, methodological, and theoretical assumptions of fantasy, with each differing in approach but all coming together to build a dynamic yet operable paradigm. The second half, defined geographically, sweeps the globe to add voices, perspectives, and texts that have long gone largely unnoticed. The cumulative effect is a refreshing and exciting collection that truly magnifies the reach Fantasy Studies.” —Keren Omry, University of Haifa This handbook is the first-of-its-kind comprehensive overview of fantasy outside the Anglo-American hegemony. While most academic studies of fantasy follow the well-trodden path of focusing on Tolkien, Rowling, and others, our collection spotlights rich and unique fantasy literatures in India, Australia, Italy, Greece, Poland, Russia, China, and many other areas of Europe, Asia, and the global South. The first part focuses on the theoretical aspects of fantasy, broadening and modifying existing definitions to accommodate the global reach of the genre. The second part contains essays illuminating specific cultures, countries, and religious or ethnic traditions. From Aboriginal myths to (self)-representation of Tibet, from the appropriation of the Polish Witcher by the American pop culture to modern Greek fantasy that does not rely on stories of Olympian deities, and from Israeli vampires to Talmudic sages, this collection is an indispensable reading for anyone interested in fantasy fiction and global literature. Elana Gomel is Associate Professor at the Department of English and American Studies at Tel-Aviv University. She is the author of five academic books and numerous articles on subjects such as narrative theory, posthumanism, science fiction, and Victorian culture. She is also an award-winning fiction writer. Danielle Gurevitch is cultural ethnologist and the director of the Multidisciplinary Studies at the Humanities at Bar-Ilan University. She is the author of several articles, editor of three academic books, and author of two. Speculative fiction, medieval literature, comparative literature, and gender studies are among her fields of expertise. Abstract

This book introduces Chinese creative writing to the English-speaking world, considering various aspects of literary and creative theories in research in Chinese writing. It covers recent trends such as cross-media practices, pedagogy in creative writing in China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, specifically, and looks at how Chinese classical culture brings new interpretations to creative writing within a global context. Consisting of 14 chapters by established scholars and experts, writers, and poets working in various genres within the Chinese writing tradition, the book presents data accrued from personal reflections, classroom teaching, video games, museum studies, radio dramas, TV series, and cyber-literature. The book includes leading Chinese leading scholars’ reflections on research and the field, providing an omnibus perspective on theories of creative writing. It focuses on the interconnection between Chinese creative writing and pedagogy and examines different writer-training methods in Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, offering a comparative perspective that deepens the understanding of institutional effects on the development of creative writing. It unpacks the interaction between Chinese creative writing and multimedia and ascertains the possibilities of incorporating media studies into writing practices. It also presents new interpretations of Chinese classical culture assets to new creative or literary manuscripts, such as TV series adaptation and Internet literature. Relevant to researchers, teachers, and students working Chinese creative writing and Chinese literature, it is also a landmark text in exposing English-speaking creative writing scholars to the wealth of Chinese creative writing, in English.

Abstract

“This collection maps the terrain of an ‘inter-discipline’ that cuts across and draws together literary studies, philosophy, architecture and visual culture, to name just some of the domains with which its contributors engage. Ranging in time from the nineteenth century into imagined futures, and across our world and others, the volume helps us reimagine and rethink questions of urban existence, coexistence and community, and shows how now more than ever, thinking through forms of urban utopia inevitably involves thinking in planetary terms.” —Edward Welch, Carnegie Professor of French University of Aberdeen, UK Utopia, Equity and Ideology in Urban Texts: Fair and Unfair Cities explores the complex interrelations of three key critical topics across a diverse range of urban writing. Interrogating the links and tensions between aesthetic and political priorities in the representation and imagining of urban life, the volume engages with work from a wide variety of linguistic and cultural origins and across a range of textual practices having the urban phenomenon as a common framing concern. Individual contributions discussing genre and literary fiction, poetic writing, documentary and essayistic texts, planning manifestos and municipal communications materials serve to demonstrate that the nuanced treatments of urban experience and potential which may be gleaned from across this textual spectrum act as a pragmatic corrective to purely conceptual approaches. As such, the volume consolidates the emerging dialogue between the fields of utopian studies and literary urban studies, understanding these as complementary approaches to the reading of the city and its textual prolongations. Michael G. Kelly is Senior Lecturer in French and Director of the Ralahine Centre for Utopian Studies at the University of Limerick. Mariano Paz is Lecturer in Spanish and Associate Director of the Ralahine Centre for Utopian Studies at the University of Limerick.
