This book offers a comprehensive analysis of the multifaceted dimensions of violent extremist groups in South Asia, attending especially to the relationships between the local and regional forces influencing their emergence and activities. In addition, research in the book shows how political, security-sensitive events and processes are framed, and the factors responsible for such framing. Similarly, it discusses prevalent discourses on anti-violent extremism policy and the on-the-ground militarized preventive/reactive interventions they guide, which are inspired by ideologies that increasingly reflect controversial understandings of the experiences of people within conditions of state fragility. In doing so, the book balances attention to local conditions that frame the rise and fall, or persistency, of incidences of violent extremism. The systems-based ecological framing of issues in the book is influenced by a concern for the broader questions of securitization, global governance, poverty, (under)development, and armed conflicts in South Asia. Shafi Md Mostofa (Ph.D.) is a theologian and security studies scholar with broad interests in political Islam, authoritarianism, modern South Asian history and politics, and international relations and clash of civilizations. He is an associate professor of World Religions and Culture at Dhaka University’s Faculty of Arts and an adjunct lecturer of the University of New England, Australia. .

The American gun control debate is best understood as a battle in a war over the influence of individualism on American culture, politics, and policy. This book demonstrates that the gun debate is fundamentally about values. Specifically, it is about what we value most: private rights, or the public good. This helps explain why the technical, empirical, or legalistic arguments we hear aren't persuasive. A review of scholarly literature on both the politics of gun control and American political culture finds an American bias toward an individualism that embraces personal rights. We argue that this bias stacks the deck against gun control. Interviews we conducted with activists show that support for, or opposition to, gun control is linked to concern for the public, or private, good. Finally, we trace the federal gun control debate in Washington from the 1960s to 2010s to show the ebbs and flows of individualism's influence. Dylan S. Psychologie de la radicalité et de l'extrémisme présente les travaux et recherches scientifiques les plus récents sur le sujet en psychologie sociale et cognition sociale : depuis la radicalité violente de rue jusqu’au terrorisme, en passant par l’extrémisme politique ou les théories du complot, sans faire l'économie d'un recul socio-historique. Dans une société de plus en plus polarisée, où les groupes idéologiques s'opposent, deux questions émergent : Comment et pourquoi devient-on extrême dans ses opinions et idéologies ? À quel moment cet extrémisme se traduit dans nos comportements par des violences verbales ou physiques? À travers la littérature scientifique en psychologie, Thomas Arcizewski et ses collègues expliquent en détail les mécanismes à l’oeuvre et les replacent systématiquement dans une perspective plus large de compréhension de l’individu dans une société. L’ensemble des théories cognitives qui permettent d’expliquer comment et pourquoi nous pouvons être entraînés dans une focalisation idéologique pouvant conduire jusqu’à la violence la plus extrême sont également envisagées.

This book focusses on the interaction between different kinds of violence and radicalization. Current research criticizes linear models of radicalization and assumes that individuals are involved in radical actions even without extremist preferences. In recent years, the research on radicalization and the use of violence has increasingly been focused on this phenomenon of individual radicalization. However, radicalization is a manifold phenomenon on various levels and exists in miscellaneous variations. The book provides an impetus for analysing social situations that contain the potential for the emergence of conflict. This is done through new outlooks on the role of emotions, the influence of narratives and representations, the connection between (non)violence and emancipation and, lastly, new approaches and perspectives on deradicalization.
