Abstract

The textbooks “Solid State Theory" give an introduction to the methods, contents and results of modern solid state physics in two volumes. This first volume has the basic courses in theoretical physics as prerequisites, i.e. knowledge of classical mechanics, electrodynamics and, in particular, quantum mechanics and statistical physics is assumed. The formalism of second quantization (occupation number representation), which is needed for the treatment of many-body effects, is introduced and used in the book. The content of the first volume deals with the classical areas of solid state physics (phonons and electrons in the periodic potential, Bloch theorem, Hartree-Fock approximation, density functional theory, electron-phonon interaction). The first volume is already suitable for Bachelor students who want to go beyond the basic courses in theoretical physics and get already familiar with an application area of theoretical physics, e.g. for an elective subject "Theoretical (Solid State) Physics" or as a basis for a Bachelor thesis. Every solid-state physicist working experimentally should also be familiar with the theoretical methods covered in the first volume. The content of the first volume can therefore also be the basis for a module "Solid State Physics" in the Master program in Physics or, together with the content of the 2nd volume, for a module "Theoretical Solid State Physics" or "Advanced Theoretical Physics". The following second volume covers application areas such as superconductivity and magnetism to areas that are current research topics (e.g. quantum Hall effect, high-temperature superconductivity, low-dimensional structures). The author Gerd Czycholl, born 1951 in Cologne, studied physics in Cologne, diploma in 1974, doctorate in 1977 at the University of Cologne, then postdoc (research assistant) at the University of Dortmund and 1983-84 at Stanford University, habilitation in 1985 at the University of Dortmund, then temporary professorships in Dortmund and 1987-1990 at RWTH Aachen. Since 1991 Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Bremen.

Abstract

This book focuses on recent advances in both theoretical and experimental studies of material behaviour at the micro- and nano-scales. Special attention is given to experimental studies of nanofilms, nanoparticles and nanocomposites as well as tooth defects. Various experimental techniques were used. Magneto- and thermoelastic coupling were considered, as were nonlocal models of thin structures.

Abstract

This book focuses on surface activity of electron emission (EE). Prior to protective painting, a steel surface is usually grit blasted or sandblasted to remove scale and contaminants and to roughen the surface. This book emphasizes that such surface treatment causes EE, increasing the strength of paint adhesion. Introduced here are the experimental results of thermally assisted photoelectron emission (TAPE) and tribo-stimulated (rubbing) electron emission (TriboEE) from practical metals after different kinds of surface-treatment processes. A detailed description is given of how Arrhenius activation energies relating to electron transfer through the surface overlayer and also the energy levels of electrons trapped in the overlayer can be obtained, and how TAPE and TriboEE data can be influenced by the chemical properties of that overlayer. This book is composed of four parts: I. Surface treatment processes; II. The principle of EE analysis used for practical surfaces; III. Materials and methods of EE and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS); IV. EE and XPS characteristics of practical surfaces. In the last part, the EE and XPS results for metals, semiconductors, and carbon materials are drawn from the author's own publications. The book will be useful for researchers engaging in surface-treatment processes of various materials.

Abstract

The subject of this supplement to Landolt-Börnstein IV/22 Series is to present both the numerical and graphical data on the various magnetic properties of materials under pressure. Data for transition metal binary oxides MmOn [M: transition metals, O: oxygen, m, n: 1~15], MXO [M: transition metals, X: F, Cl, Br, O: oxygen] and MM'On [M: transition metals, M': transition metals or non-transition metal elements, O: oxygen, n=2, 2.5, 3] ternary oxides are presented. As well known, the data-compiling principle in the Landolt-Bӧrrnstein series is to choose the best reliable values from many available experimental data. The present compilation is done according to this principle.

Abstract

Our current concept of matter, one of scientific research's greatest successes, represents a long journey, from questions posed during the birth of philosophy in Ancient Greece to recent advances in physics and chemistry, including Quantum Physics. This book outlines that journey. The book has three parts, each detailing a phase of the journey. The first saw the development of a conception based on "classical" physics; the second saw the construction of the "old" quantum theory attempting to explain the mysterious properties of matter, resulting in formulation of the "new" quantum theory; the third saw the formation of the modern conception of matter, based on quantum mechanics. Along the way, various topics are discussed, including: rediscovery and appropriation of antiquity by Western culture in the modern era; the subsequent revision process in the 16th and 17th centuries and the new experiments and theories of the 18th; attempts to understand the mysterious properties of matter that could not be explained by classical physics; the first quantization hypotheses; discovery of new purely "quantum-mechanical" properties of matter; and the ultimate clarification of atomic structure. This book is aimed at anyone who wants a clear picture of how we arrived at the modern conception of matter. .

Abstract

Solid state physics is essentially the investigation of the quantum properties of solids. This subject poses a serious learning curve to students because abstract concepts (from quantum mechanics and reciprocal space) are used and a variety of mathematical tools are used, especially techniques of making approximations. The purpose of this book is to provide students with a rigorous but accessible introduction to solid state physics, covering the standard topics of crystal structures, phonons, electronic properties, basic semiconductor physics and basic aspects of magnetism. This book has two unique features to make it accessible to students: 1) explicit details of calculations are provided; and 2) a number of animations are interspersed throughout the book to aid the visualization of abstract concepts. The provision of calculational details allows students to have time to ponder over the physical implications of the calculations that were being carried out, thereby leading to a deeper and more satisfying understanding of the topic.

Abstract

T his textbook offers a comprehensive introduction to the basic principles ruling the working mechanism of the most common solid-state electronic devices. It covers the physics of semiconductors and the properties of junctions of semiconductors with semiconductors, metals, and insulators. The exposition makes a minimal use of quantum mechanics concepts and methods. On the other hand, it avoids the pure phenomenological description of the properties of electronic devices. Thus, using a semi-classical approach the book provides a rigorous treatment of the subject. The book is addressed to undergraduate students of scientific and technological faculties as well to professionals who wish to be introduced to the basic principles of electronic devices.
