This monograph studies the architectural history of ancient public toilets, called foricae. Using comparative data and historical, archaeological and literary sources, this comprehensive analysis of foricae offers a deeper understanding of their origin in the Hellenistic period. It also examines their diffusion in the ancient Roman world through advances in hydraulic technology and building techniques. Foricae became characteristic features of many Roman cities, playing an important civic and hygienic role. The study of their features reveals various plans, of which the peristyle is undoubtedly the most original. The independent and freestanding peristyle forica of Kos (Greece) is the most opulent example, and the exhaustive survey of the peristyle foricae of the Hadrianic Baths of Lepcis Magna (Libya) and of Gortyn (Crete-Greece) prove the importance of this typology in the history of functional architecture in the Roman Empire.

The analysis of sanitary spaces and places dedicated to personal care, as in a privacy observatory, helps with the in-depth assessment of social changes, allowing us to determine how the lives of users can be improved, how conflicts of use in public places can be resolved between populations of different sexes and ages, and how the quality of public and private health can be enhanced. Observing these issues pushes us to explore the forms and meanings of bathrooms and private spaces in relation to their different functions, including those of transgressive and informal meeting places and spaces of inevitable and forced social coexistence. This book constitutes a new step in this field of research, presenting a series of scientific and artistic interventions that proves the diverse range of uses to which 'wet rooms' can be put in social life, the evolution of the use of furniture, and the new meanings of details and objects in domestic bathrooms and public toilets. The texts, largely written for the 2018 symposium Intimacy Exposed: Toilet, Bathroom, Restroom (organised by the Department of Interior Architecture at HEAD - Genève) present a practice-based study of the recent past of modernist technologies and a vision of the future of personal and collective practices regarding the realm of the toilet. Edited by Javier Fernández Contreras and Roberto Zancan. Text by Catherine Ince, Louise Lemoine and Ila Bêka, Eva Gil Lopesino, Alexandra Midal, Philippe Rahm, Rotor-Deconstruction, Joel Sanders.

16 sets of creators join the big project that greatly changes the common sense of public bathrooms. 17 toilets introduce photos, drawings, data, etc. Contains many interviews and contributes and features designs by Tadao Ando, Takenosuke Sakura, Shushi Saka, Toyo Ito, Naho Tamura, Sonsuke Fujimoto, Kagato Kago, Gochini, Mark Newson, Junko Kobayama, Masatsukazu, Sato, NIGO, Miles Pennington, Makiko. If you have seen the film ‘Perfect Days’ by Wim Wenders, about a man who leads a tranquil life cleaning public toilets in Shibuya, you might recognise just how truly beautiful such places can be. In the past, public toilets may not have left a good impression due to sanitary and safety concerns. These facilities were usually lacking inclusive design qualities. Toilets should be accessible, comfortable, and anxiety-free for everyone at all times. With this in mind, the project team considered what sort of public toilet would be safe, clean, and comfortable for every user. These are the toilets featured in the film, now renovated to be gender-free and fitted with the latest sanitation equipment.
