En raison de son riche patrimoine mégalithique, l'Aveyron figure sans doute parmi les lieux les plus inspirants en Europe pour se rencontrer et discuter de l'architecture et de la statuaire néolithique et protohistorique en pierre, et par extension du rôle que joue ce matériau dans la vie et l'imaginaire des sociétés du Néolithique et de la Protohistoire méridionale, notamment avec l'émergence du mégalithisme. Par ailleurs, par le biais de ce matériau, nulle part ailleurs l'homme néolithique ne se sera autant représenté lui-même. Il s'agit d'un cas unique qui fait des statues-menhirs, ces figures immobiles et muettes en apparence, les témoins à la fois de la vie quotidienne et de la pensée symbolique des populations méridionales de Préhistoire récente. Le colloque de Rodez (17-21 nov. 2021), dont la publication de ces actes rend compte ici, a ainsi proposé d'aborder l'utilisation de la pierre dans les constructions pré et protohistoriques, aussi bien en contexte domestique, funéraire et symbolique, à travers des approches techniques variées s'appuyant sur des méthodes et des outils de recherches innovants qui conduisent à de nouveaux questionnements, notamment sur le pourquoi de leur existence et leur signification. Il s'est agi de regarder, au-delà des traditionnelles et légitimes questions de chronologie ou de pratiques funéraires et symboliques, le projet mégalithique en le considérant à la fois comme un système technique à part entière et une production symbolique. En d'autres termes, il s'agit de définir comment les techniques d'acquisition, de transformation et d'utilisation du matériau mégalithique ont été mises à contribution pour produire du sens. Comme à l'accoutumée, la session thématique est accompagnée d'articles rendant compte de l'actualité du thème et des recherches en cours. Because of its rich megalithic heritage, Aveyron is undoubtedly one of the most inspiring places in Europe to meet and discuss Neolithic and Protohistoric stone architecture and statuary, and by extension the role this material played in the life and imagination of Neolithic and Southern Protohistoric societies, particularly with the emergence of megalithism. What's more, nowhere else will Neolithic man be so self-represented. This is a unique case that makes statue-menhirs, these seemingly immobile and mute figures, witnesses to both the daily life and symbolic thought of southern populations in recent prehistory. The Rodez colloquium (Nov. 17-21, 2021), the proceedings of which are published here, addressed the use of stone in prehistoric and protohistoric constructions, whether in domestic, funerary or symbolic contexts, through a variety of technical approaches based on innovative research methods and tools, leading to new questions, notably as to the reasons for their existence and their signifi cance. Beyond the traditional and legitimate questions of chronology or funerary and symbolic practices, the megalithic project is considered both as a technical system in its own right and a symbolic production. In other words, defi ning how the techniques of acquiring, transforming and using megalithic material have been used to produce meaning. As usual, the thematic session is accompanied by articles on the latest developments in the theme and current research.

Rethinking Migrations in Late Prehistoric Eurasia provides an insight into cutting-edge research on late prehistoric migrations in Eurasia, integrating different strands of evidence and emphasising the need for combining bioarchaeological analyses with a solid theoretical and methodological background. The 15 chapters within the book range from the 3rd to the 1st millennia BC, with a geographical scope extending from Atlantic Europe to Central Asia. Case studies include a reassessment of large-scale migrations, but also high-resolution studies from micro-regions. Overall, the results offered in the volume reveal the extraordinary diversity of migrations in ancient Eurasia and the ways in which archaeology can contribute to wider discussions on past and present mobility."--
