Abstract

Li He (790-816) holds a place in China's poetic history somewhat outside the mainstream, but in every generation of readers there have been those who have found his intense and often cryptic lyrical visions irresistibly fascinating and utterly without parallel. He is renowned particularly for his lyrical reimaginings of song traditions from the ancient past, and his premature death, along with the otherworldly quality of many of his works, led later readers to view him as the emblematic cursed poet, whose fascination with ancient history, with ghosts, and with celestial and demonic beings seemed to presage the brevity of his own existence. Li He's style and diction are often idiosyncratic and even hermetic, and his work presents daunting challenges to readers wishing to follow the flights of his imagination, or simply to construe the basic sense of his language. This volume presents close translations of all of Li He's poetry, in facing-page format with the original texts, with explanatory notes on literary and historical references and difficult points of interpretation, along with endnotes briefly discussing textual variants and other technical matters. Taken together, these features will be a welcome aid to readers wishing to explore Li He's poetic worlds first-hand.

Abstract

A generous selection of poems by a major Victorian writer, a virtuoso of traditional forms who came to be recognized as a uniquely inventive and original voice in modern poetry This selection of poems by Thomas Hardy (1840-1928), edited by David Bromwich, covers the range of Hardy's extraordinary work: songs, ballads, and sonnets, dramatic monologues and elegies, along with poems that mark epochal events, such as the end of the Great War. This selection shows why Hardy has been admired as the most inward and personal of the moderns, yet also the most accessible and widely read. Included here is the full and integral text of Chosen Poems of Thomas Hardy, the final selection of his own work that Hardy chose to publish. Bromwich has selected more than one hundred fifty additional poems that cover the length of Hardy's career, from Wessex Poems to Winter Words. His critical and biographical introduction sets Hardy's achievement in the context of a career in prose and poetry that has no parallel.

Abstract

Adam Mickiewicz (1798 - 1855) was the greatest Polish Romantic poet, and one of the great intellectual and literary figures of the first half of the 19th century in Europe. Through his verses, as well as his efforts as a scholar, lecturer, political activist and literary celebrity, he sought to bridge the gap between the Slavic nations and the culture of Western Europe. This selection of 27 poems focuses on the poems within Mickiewicz's oeuvre which might be described as metaphysical. These original, ingenious verses explore an astonishing range of religious, mystical, philosophical, and existential themes, inviting the reader to include Mickiewicz among the most eminent figures of early European Romanticism, including Coleridge, Wordsworth and Novalis, as well the American transcendentalists. Mickiewicz's poetry and thought are the creation of a restlessly inventive mind: his vision was unorthodox, unpredictable and ever-developing. The book presents a bilingual edition (Polish-English) with a scholarly introduction and commentary, presenting Mickiewicz as a writer in the context of his times. The co-editors of the volume are Jerzy Fiećko, one of the eminent experts in the field of Mickiewicz studies, and Mateusz Stróżyński, an internationally recognized scholar of the Platonic tradition and Western mysticism.

Abstract

This book examines different contexts relevant to Pushkin in 1825 when the poem "Count Nulin" was written. Its bulk consists of studies devoted to (1) various manuscripts of the text, (2) the issue of censorship and the publication of "Count Nulin" during Pushkin's life, (3) the biographical context for the poem's creation, (4) the role of the text in literary polemics and (5) reactions of critics (as well as readers) during Pushkin's lifetime. Developing the idea of Boris Eikhenbaum, R. Leibov proposes that the text was addressed primarily to members of the Petersburg literati who made up the "Poliarnaia zvezda" (Polar Star) circle. Moreover, Leibov suggests that, in "Count Nulin", Pushkin purposefully exaggerated those literary techniques that attracted criticism in "Eugene Onegin", making "Count Nulin" function as a self-parody. The final section of the book is composed of commentary on the poem, combining a traditional focus on the interpretation of fragments of the text with an emphasis on its overall composition, as well as description of the changing rhetorical and narrative strategies of its author.
