Abstract

If the uses of photogrammetry are many and various, the use of it in archaeology is now well standardised in the large majority of these uses. It is mainly a replacement of the traditional plan, section and elevation measurements of archaeological remains by the production of ortho-images, known as orthomosaics. This guide aims to provide students and professionals of our discipline with a complete protocol (from field acquisition to data storage), which has been tried and tested, with reproducible results, and which is entirely based on free scientific tools.

Abstract

Portus, investigaciones geoarqueológicas en el muelle este-oeste collects the scientific results of the geoarchaeological project on the east-west pier of Portus (Rome) developed within the framework of the Archaeological Projects Abroad program of the Ministerio de Cultura y Deporte of the Kingdom of Spain, and also under a collaboration agreement between the University of Huelva and the Parco Archeologico di Ostia Antica. Since 2017, without interruption until the present, various excavation and study campaigns have focused their efforts on the pier via an inter- and multidisciplinary methodology involving archaeologists, geologists, palaeobotanists and palaeontologists. Thus, excavation activities, geophysical prospecting, petrographic, archaeometric studies and architectural analysis have been developed, always with the application of new photogrammetric techniques and laser scanning, which have allowed us to obtain a significant volume of data. Its analysis and interpretation now gives the most extensive and up-to-date picture of one of the most interesting and extensive docks in Portus, with new contributions related to its chronology, with a building phase from the fourth century AD; its construction system, whose foundations have been determined; the surrounding paleoenvironment, with new data related to the silting process of the Claudio inlet; as well as the changes that occured in the transition to the Early Middle Ages, among others.

Abstract

Since the launch of Seasat, TIROS-N, and Nimbus-7 satellites equipped with ocean observation sensors in 1978, a new era of ocean remote sensing has opened. Today, remotely sensed data have been widely used in oceanographic studies. This reprint collects various advanced ocean remote sensing technologies and their applications, including the use of artificial intelligence techniques to explore ocean information and bibliometric analysis to assess researchers and trends in this scientific field. The observations of various sensors enrich the application of ocean environment monitoring and ocean dynamical analysis. If you are interested in understanding the application of ocean remote sensing, this monograph should be very helpful.

Abstract

In the last few years, huge amounts of progress have been made regarding remote sensing in the field of computer vision. This success and progress is mostly due to the effectiveness of deep learning (DL) algorithms. In addition, the remote sensing community has shifted its attention to DL, and DL algorithms have been used to achieve significant success in many image analysis tasks. However, with regard to remote sensing, a number of challenges caused by difficulties in data acquisition and annotation have not been fully solved yet. This reprint is a collection of novel developments in the field of remote sensing using computer vision, deep learning, and artificial intelligence. The articles published involve fundamental theoretical analyses as well as those demonstrating their application to real-world problems.

Abstract

When adopting remote sensing techniques in precision agriculture, there are two main areas to consider: data acquisition and data analysis methodologies. Imagery and remote sensor data collected using different platforms provide a variety of information volumes and formats. For example, recent research in precision agriculture has used multispectral images from different platforms, such as satellites, airborne, and, most recently, drones. These images have been used for various analyses, from the detection of pests and diseases, growth, and water status of crops to yield estimations. However, accurately detecting specific biotic or abiotic stresses requires a narrow range of spectral information to be analyzed for each application. In data analysis, the volume and complexity of data formats obtained using the latest technologies in remote sensing (e.g., a cube of data for hyperspectral imagery) demands complex data processing systems and data analysis using multiple inputs to estimate specific categorical or numerical targets. New and emerging methodologies within artificial intelligence, such as machine learning and deep learning, have enabled us to deal with these increasing data volumes and the analysis complexity.

Abstract

Satellite measurements of night-time lights are widely recognized as a valuable indicator of human activity on Earth. These measurements capture the amount of light emitted from Earth at night and provide significant insights into a range of fields, including urbanization processes, socio-economic dynamics, local and regional GDP, economic impacts of conflicts, effects of epidemics on economic activity, and the various impacts of natural and man-made disasters. This reprint includes 16 articles that were published in the Remote Sensing Special Issue "Remote Sensing of Night-Time Light" and that highlight novel research on the remote sensing of night-time lights. The reprint aims to stimulate progress in the remote sensing research domain related to the utilization of night-time lights in a wide range of multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary domains, including urban studies, ecology, economics, oceanography, sociology, epidemiology, and more.

Abstract

The forest, as the main body of the terrestrial ecosystem, has a huge carbon sink function and plays an important role in coping with global climate change. This book on "Monitoring forest carbon sequestration with remote sensing" mainly focuses on new remote sensing theories, methods, and technologies for monitoring carbon sinks in forest ecosystems (including urban forest ecosystems) and calls for papers that present original research on the following broad topics: Application of new remote sensing techniques to estimate forest aboveground biomass carbon storage and soil carbon storage. Coupling remote sensing and ecosystem models to simulate the carbon cycle of a forest ecosystem. Application of new sensors or algorithms to retrieve vegetation parameters closely related to forest carbon sink functions, such as leaf area index, tree height, chlorophyll, maximum rate of rubisco carboxylase activity, sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence, forest age, etc. Integration of multi-temporal or multi-sensor data to detect dynamic changes in and disturbances of forest resources.
