Abstract

"Shépa: 'explanation' or 'elucidation' in Tibetan. A form of oral poetry sung antiphonally in a question-and-answer style. This book contains a unique collection of Tibetan oral narrations and songs known as Shépa, as these have been performed, recorded and shared between generations of Choné Tibetans from Amdo living in the eastern Tibetan Plateau. Presented in trilingual format - in Tibetan, Chinese and English - the book reflects a sustained collaboration with and between members of the local community, including narrators, monks, and scholars, calling attention to the diversity inherent in all oral traditions, and the mutability of Shépa in particular. From creation myths to Bon and Buddhist cosmologies and even wedding songs, Shépa engages with and draws on elements of religious traditions, historical legacies and deep-seated cultural memories within Choné and Tibet, revealing the multi-layered conceptualization of the Tibetan physical world and the resilience of Tibetan communities within it. This vital and unique collection, part of the World Oral Literature Series, situates Shépa in its ethnographic context, offering insights into the preservation and revitalization of intangible cultural heritage in the context of cultural Tibet, Indigenous studies and beyond. Scholars and students in the fields of anthropology, linguistics, ethnic and minority relations, critical Indigenous studies, Tibetan studies, Himalayan studies, Asian studies and the broader study of China will find much to reward them in this book, as will all readers interested in the documentation and preservation of endangered oral traditions, intangible cultural heritage, performance and textuality, and Tibetan literature and religions."--Publisher's website.

Abstract

"How did the use of earlier narrative and legal material within Chronicles and other Second Temple texts illumine instances of unevenness that later interpreters smoothed to a degree but retained in the text? Benjamin D. Giffone shows how community memory existing outside the written texts provided limits on the changes that could be introduced by scribes. Narrativity as a key feature of the texts allowed certain memoires to be retained, framed by various techniques to suit the storymakers' aims." --

Abstract

"This volume explores the rich pre-history, history, and oral history of the North East region of India -- a land-locked region that is home to over 350 ethnolinguistic communities. Despite its uniqueness and diversity, little is known to the outside world. The book studies the vibrant and diverse socio-political and cultural history of this region through a transdisciplinary perspective, covering a wide range of topics such as the pre-history, medieval and colonial history of Assam, the geopolitics of the creation of independent states from undivided Assam, oral narratives from Manipur, prehistoric cultures of Meghalaya, the Naga National Movement, Sikkim's Namgyal dynasty, and Tripura's transition from monarchy to democracy. It also discusses the invaluable contributions made by Professor Mohammad Taher (1931-2015), who laid the foundation of geography in North East India. A compelling exploration of this geo-politically contested space; this volume will be of interest to students and researchers of anthropology, archaeology, history, human geography, South Asian studies, and minority studies."

Abstract

"The significance of this book is its uniqueness. First, the book contains a collection of fourteen chapters that capture the personal, professional, and historical experiences of international global scholars and artists to which they were subjected to in their native country and after they immigrated to the United States. What makes this book project highly unusual in comparison to other publications is that these international global scholars and artists experienced historical events of trauma and joy in their native country and in their newly adopted country of the United States that lie deeply buried in their sub-consciousness; that these memories are unforgettable and still painful for them; that these memories are a constant companion in their daily lives; and that the experienced historical events of trauma and joy have shaped their professional and personal lives to this very day. There exists a paucity in the global education literature of this far-reaching topic and, thus, has the potential to enhance and diversify the global education literature. Second, the significance of this book lies in the pedagogical power of the oral history narrative tradition and its impact on students at the secondary and tertiary levels in education. When one's lived experiences of trauma or joy occur during a critical time in history, they rarely yield unforgotten memories and deeply held private knowledge that do not come to light without a storyteller. When first-hand accounts are shared publicly, they can bring powerful insights into past historic events to the very presence. Thus, the pedagogical strength of this book contributes to knowledge creation in the classroom as oral histories move students from abstract textbook descriptions to concrete and compelling "lived" stories associated with historical happenings. This pedagogy leads students to become more critical of historical events of the past and develops in them a deeper understanding of the past. Consequently, oral history narratives enable teachers and teacher educators to enrich the abstract text of textbooks with the authentic voice of the individual. A third significance of this book lies embedded in the rich historical perspective displayed by storytellers of non-native international global scholars and artists from around the world who portray their lived-through, first-hand experiences such as child labor, communism, hate, hunger, fascism, fear, intolerance, discrimination, prejudice, poverty, war, protest, and death. Finally, a major purpose of this book is to expose young learners from around the world to empowering non-native international role models in global education and the arts from nations in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Eurasia, Europe, the Middle East, and South America who build bridges-not walls-between peoples and nations"--

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Based on approaches accepted in Classical Philology as well as on folkloristics, this book defends the theory of Émile Dermenghem, who affirms the Amazigh ("Berber") origin of the tale of Psyche and Cupid. In North Africa, are the oral counterparts of the Latin narrative of Apuleius (ATU 425), mere traces of a European influences? Is it only by affectation that the author, born in Madauros (currently Mdaourouch), recognizes himself as "half-Numidian and half-Getulian" (Apol. 24)? Is this passage the only indication of Africanity in the work? Where did the author find the intellectual legitimacy to insert a 'barbaric' tale into his novel? Is it likely that the Latin narrative generated the oral tales of North Africa? Finally, what is the part of the imperial culture and that of the provincial culture in the middle of the Metamorphoses? The answers to these questions allow the investivation to gradually reconstitute a unique poetic in its time, because it was based on the movement between Latin, Greek, and African (Libyan) cultures of which Apuleius is the heir. --
