Who owns the past? Are museum archives and their re-collections of cultural heritage a cult of the dead-and if so, are we living in a necropolis? This book on photography, cemeteries, and the archive evolved out of an experimental research project at the Bibliotheca Hertzianain Rome, with its immense collection of canonic photographs from the history of art and architecture. An artist's book, it takes on the form of a description of an unfinished film in five acts-a cinematic fragment, so to speak: Dopostoria. The title essay by Christoph Keller is complemented by two contributions on burial cultures in prehistory and in modernity from the archaeologist Maria Clara Martinelli and the modern historian Carolin Kosuch. A sequence of collages at the back of the book conjures up a phantasmagorical journey through an ancient-modern Rome.

Een voorstelling’ is the new collection catalog of this museum and shows the 125 works of art that were donated by Jules and Irma Dhondt-Dhaenens to the self-founded foundation in 1967.The catalogue is conceived around a photographic concept that reveals the physical handling of the collection. Clusters of works are assembled, laid out on the museum floor by figurants and photographed. The book becomes a theatrical performance with paintings, drawings and sculptures deployed as actors in changing stage settings. In addition, in a separate section, 27 top works are highlighted and reproduced full-page.Finally, the book contains texts by outside voices who briefly explain their personal experiences with the museum and interpretations of its historical heritage. The texts were written by Inge Braeckman, Bart Cassiman, Chantal Pattyn, Herwig Todts, Kia Tsakiridis, Karen Van Godtsenhoven, Olga Van Oost, Cathérine Verleysen and Bart Verschaffel.

Marking the 50th anniversary of Edward Steichen's death, this exciting project showcases the work of two eminent contemporary artists, Dutch photographer Erwin Olaf (*1959) and Belgian visual artist Hans Op de Beeck (*1969).Out of their appreciation for each other and their shared admiration for Steichen?s oeuvre, Olaf and Op de Beeck agreed to collaborate on a project for the first time ever. The exhibition features Olaf's series Im Wald, together with watercolours, sculptures and videos by Op de Beeck and landscape photographs by Steichen himself, creating surprising connections between the three artists. Although very different, they come together like virtuoso musicians, creating a new harmony, a richly variegated presentation of imagery in black, white and grey tones that is strikingly unified and self-evident.The show, thus, provides a new context for the oeuvre of the Luxembourg-born photographer and encourages viewers to (re)discover the artistic qualities of his prints through a contemporary lens. In addition to their joint show, Olaf and Op de Beeck will also present a curated selection of works by Steichen from the MNHA's extensive collection in the museum?s Steichen room.bron : https://hansopdebeeck.com/exhibitions/2022/erwin-olaf-hans-op-de-beeck-inspired-by-steichen

The core of the Van Gogh Museum’s collection consists of the paintings, drawings, prints and letters of Vincent van Gogh, as well as a substantial group of artworks by his contemporaries, which Vincent assembled with his brother Theo. The fact that the collection was kept together and eventually housed in a dedicated museum is entirely to the credit of the Van Gogh family. Following Theo’s tragic death, barely six months after that of Vincent himself, his widow Jo van Gogh-Bonger devoted her life to raising awareness of this magnificent legacy. The international fame that Van Gogh’s work enjoys today is due in large part to her efforts. To keep the collection intact, Theo and Jo’s son – named Vincent after his uncle – set out to have a museum built. So it was that the Van Gogh Museum opened its doors to the public in 1973, the fiftieth anniversary of which falls in 2023.Choosing Vincent looks back over a tale of doubt, setbacks and triumph, while highlighting many of the masterpieces and lesser-known gems from this unique collection.
