In Creation and Contemplation, Julien Decharneux explores the connections between the cosmology of the Qur’ān and various cosmological traditions of Late Antiquity, with a focus on Syriac Christianity.The first part of the book studies how, in exhorting its audience to contemplate the world, the Qur’ān carries on a tradition of natural contemplation that had developed throughout Late Antiquity in the Christian world. In this regard, the analysis suggests particularly striking connections with the mystical and ascetic literature of the Church of the East, which was in effervescence at the time of the emergence of Islam.The second part argues that the Qur’ānic cosmological discourse is built so as to serve the overarching theological message of the text, namely God’s absolute unity. Despite the allusive, and sometimes obscure, way in which the Qur’ān talks about the world’s coming into being and its maintenance in existence, the text betrays its authors’ acquaintance with cosmological debates of Late Antiquity.In studying the Qur’ān through the prism of Late Antiquity, this book contributes to our understanding of the emergence of Islam and its relationship with other religious traditions of the time.

"Urmas Nõmmik untersucht die Anfänge der Erzelternerzählungen im Kontext der Königshöfe im alten Israel und Juda. Die mit Literar- und Redaktionskritik kombinierte Motivgeschichte bzw. Motivkritik erlaubt einen Einblick in die Verbindungen zwischen den ältesten Genesis-Texten, anderen alttestamentlichen Texten und den altorientalischen Hoftraditionen. Einzelne Jakoberzählungen in Gen 25*, 27*, 28* und 32* sowie ihre älteste Kombination im Zyklus Gen 25-33*, aber auch die Isaakerzählung in Gen 26* und die Lot-Sodom-Erzählung in Gen 19* liefern zahlreiche Motivverbindungen zu nordwestsemitischen und mesopotamischen Texten. Besonders sind aber die strukturellen Parallelen in alttestamentlichen (Gen, Num, 1-2 Sam, 1-2 Kön), hethitischen und mesopotamischen Überlieferungen hervorzuheben. Unter den letzten sticht zumal die Gilgamesch-Tradition heraus, die sich mehr oder weniger in den Jakob-, Isaak-, Rebekka- und Lot-Erzählungen widerspiegelt."

This book considers the role of postmodernism (skepticism towards metanarratives and anti-essentialism) in Ralph Waldo Emerson's philosophy by putting it in conversation with key 20th and 21st century thinkers such as Beauvoir, Coates, Derrida, Paz, Rorty, and Zizek. Postmodern Emerson shows how Emersonian skepticism to metanarratives such as sexism, racism, Beauvoiran "serious values," and others, can help us face some of society's gravest contemporary social and philosophical challenges. Methodologically, the book exemplifies Emersonian postmodernism by defying traditional philosophical metanarratives about the difference between high and low culture or serious and ridiculous subjects, and Emerson with what would seem to be his opposite. This is itself a postmodern gesture, breaking rules of genre and topic to make unlikely but interesting connections. Above all, this book proves that in this time of social division and widespread despair, Emerson can help.
