Abstract

Refinement and enrichment of surfaces in stone, wood and plaster is a fundamental aspect of early modern architecture which has been marginalised by architectural history. Enriching Architecture aims to retrieve and rehabilitate surface achievement as a vital element of early modern buildings in Britain and Ireland. Rejected by modernism, demeaned by the conceptual 'turn' and too often reduced to its representative or social functions, we argue for the historical legitimacy of creative craft skill as a primary agent in architectural production. However, in contrast to the connoisseurial and developmental perspectives of the past, this book is concerned with how surfaces were designed, achieved and experienced. The contributors draw upon the major rethinking of craft and materials within the wider cultural sphere in recent years to deconstruct traditional, oppositional ways of thinking about architectural production. This is not a craft for craft's sake argument but an effort to embed the tangible findings of conservation and curatorial research within an evidence-led architectural history that illuminates the processes of early modern craftsmanship. The book explores broad themes of surface treatment such as wainscot, rustication, plasterwork, and staircase embellishment together with chapters focused on virtuoso buildings and set pieces which illuminate these themes.

Abstract

The book examines the interplay of ancient and new decor elements on Insula IX 5 in Pompeii during the final phase of the city between AD 62-79 . This is the first time that an attempt has been made to grasp the construction and equipment phases of the houses. However, the décor is not only classified chronologically, but analyzed both in terms of the décor decisions made for it and the effect of the décor.

Abstract

Two days of study were devoted a few years ago to the lapidary deposits relating to medieval monuments in Picardy and Northern France - "Architecture in objects: the lapidary deposits of Picardy" (University of Picardie, Amiens, September 2006) and "Architecture in objects: the lapidary deposits of Northern France" (INHA, Paris, December 2008). This third meeting, which took place at the University of Artois on November 29, 2019, was an opportunity to present the latest studies on this theme. Fragments of architecture - whether preserved in sites or monuments themselves, in museums, in archaeological centers, etc. - form either the sole vestiges of destroyed buildings, or witnesses scattered among the ruins, or a deposit created during restorations undertaken on a monument or following archaeological projects. The diversity of their nature and their place of conservation as well as their owner, however, calls for similar questions. The proceedings of this study day aim to make known and compare the results of various research and reflections undertaken on the lapidary collections of Flanders, Artois and Cambrésis, linked to religious, civil and editorial. The chronological field largely focused on the Middle Ages is also open to modern times. This work brings together contributions written by heritage professionals, art and architectural historians and archaeologists. They concern the history of the lapidary collections of a place and their content, on a particular fund, on the material management of these collections, the means and methods implemented for their study, fundamental for the contribution to knowledge monumental, and their promotion to a wide audience.

Abstract

"This book examines neglected architectural decoration from the late antique city of the East Mediterranean. It addresses the omission in scholarship of discussion about the embellishment of non-monumental secular buildings (public porticoes, small public baths, shops/workshops, and non-elite houses). The finishing of these structures has been overlooked at the expense of more lofty buildings and remains one of the least known aspects of the late antique city. The book surveys the archaeological evidence for decoration in the region, with the maritime sites of Ostia and Ephesus selected as case studies. Drawing upon archaeological, written, and visual sources, it attempts to reconstruct how such buildings appeared to late antique viewers and investigates why they were decorated as they were"--
