Abstract

This book focuses on the unified solutions and analysis for the problems in soil mechanics based on the unified strength theory, which is a new theory on the yield and failure of materials under multi-axial stresses. Then, it provides a system of yield and failure criteria adopted for most materials, from metallic materials to rocks, concretes, soils, polymers, etc. It includes the Tresca criterion, Mohr–Coulomb theory, and Mises criterion as well, which are special cases or linear approximation of the UST. .

Abstract

This textbook offers a uniquely accessible introduction to flows on compact surfaces, filling a gap in the existing literature. The book can be used for a single semester course and/or for independent study. It demonstrates that covering spaces provide a suitable and modern setting for studying the structure of flows on compact surfaces. The thoughtful treatment of flows on surfaces uses topology (especially covering spaces), the classification of compact surfaces, and Euclidean and hyperbolic rigid motions to establish structural theorems that describe flows on surfaces generally. Several of the topics from dynamical systems that appear in this book (e.g., fixed points, invariant sets, orbits, almost periodic points) also appear in the many subareas of dynamical systems. The book successfully presents the reader with a self-contained introduction to dynamical systems or an expansion of one's existing knowledge of the field. Prerequisites include completion of a graduate-level topology course; a background in dynamical systems is not assumed.

Abstract

Experimental physics is an important part of the education of anyone interested in science or engineering, serving as one of the fundamental fields of knowledge for understanding how the world around us functions. This textbook seeks to present the topics usually covered in an experimental physics course for aspiring scientists and engineers in a concise but comprehensive manner. The book is organized into ten chapters on different topics, including work and energy, gravity, relative motions, and fluid mechanics. Proof of the most important theorems is given, and additional information is provided to stimulate the curiosity of the students. At the end of each chapter, performed exercises and exercises with solutions are offered to illustrate the chapter’s points and make their importance even clearer. Based on the author’s teaching notes from his own lectures, this book proves invaluable to anyone with an interest in developing a clearer understanding of such topics as mechanics and thermodynamics.

Abstract

This book is the standard text book for elastoplasticity which is explained comprehensively covering the rate-independent to -dependent finite deformations, soils, polymers, crystal plasticity, etc. and the friction phenomenon. Concise explanations on vector-tensor analysis and continuum mechanics are provided first, covering the underlying physical concepts, e.g. various time-derivatives, pull-back and push-forward operations, work-conjugacy and multiplicative decomposition of deformation gradient tensor. Then, the rigorous elastoplastic/viscoplastic models are explained comprehensively, which are based on the subloading surface model incorporating the crucially important variable “normal-yield ratio” in order to describe the continuous development of the plastic/viscoplastic strain rate with the approach to the yield stress but can never be described by the other plasticity models, e.g. the Chaboche-Ohno and the Dafalias-Yoshida models assuming the purely-elastic domain. The main of them are as follows: 1) The subloading surface concept underling the cyclic plasticity is introduced, which insists that the plastic deformation develops as the stress approaches the yield surface. Thus, the smooth elastic-plastic transition leading to the continuous variation of the tangent stiffness modulus is described always. 2) The subloading-overstress model is formulated by which the elastoplastic deformation during the quasi-static loading and the viscoplastic deformation during the dynamic and impact loading can be described by the unified equation. Then, only this model can be used to describe the deformation in the general rate of deformation, disusing the elastoplastic constitutive equation. 3) The hyperelastic-based (visco)plasticity based on the multiplicative decomposition of deformation gradient tensor and the subloading surface model is formulated for the exact descriptions of the finite elastic and (visco)plastic deformations. 4) The subloading-friction model is formulated for the exact description of the dry and the fluid (lubricated) frictions at the general rate of sliding from the static to the impact sliding. Thus, all the elastic and inelastic deformation/sliding phenomena of solids can be described accurately in the unified equation by the subloading-overstress model. The subloading surface model will be engraved as the governing law of irreversible deformation of solids in the history of solid mechanics. .

Abstract

Knowledge of and skill in physics are essential foundations for studies in science and engineering. This book offers students an introduction to the basic concepts and principles of physics. It covers various topics specifically related to physical mechanics, the properties of matter, and heat. Each chapter begins with a summary of concepts, principles, definitions, and formulae to be discussed, as well as ending with problems and solutions that illustrate the specific topic. Steps are detailed to help build reasoning and understanding. There are 300 worked problems and 100 exercises in the book, as well as 306 figures to help the reader visualize the processes being addressed. Computer calculations and solutions are carried out using wxMaxima to give insight and help build computational skills. The book is aimed at first-year undergraduate students studying introductory physics, and would also be useful for physics teachers in their instruction, particularly the exercises at the end of each chapter.

Abstract

This book covers the work of Erik W. Aslaksen who continues to develop the view of society and its evolution published in earlier work – The Social Bond (Springer 2018), The Stability of Society (Springer 2020), and Measures of Social Evolution (Springer 2021), bringing together core material of that work with the results of recent investigations in order to present the evolution of society as an integrated and continuous story leading right up to the present time. A story of human action driven by our beliefs, desires, and an ideology arising out of our ability to transform and exploit our environment through the development and application of technology. The distinguishing feature of the work is the treatment of society as an information-processing system and applying the system methodology for handling complexity, as it is applied, e.g., in engineering. This focus on information is particularly pertinent in the current circumstances, where the world has arrived at a critical point in its history through the conjunction of a number of issues that appear to be spiralling out of control: Global warming and the associated climate change, the destruction of our environment through such processes as land clearing and industrialisation with associated loss of biodiversity, the rapidly increasing visibility of the inequality in the quality of life with associated tensions, and above all, the determination of the US-led Western alliance to cling to its hegemonial role, apparently at all cost. With the sophistication and proliferation of nuclear weapons, the latter has the potential to bring on the end of civilisation as we know it. The resolution of any of these issues depends on the information available to all parties involved, and hence, the availability and quality of information is seen as the crucial and overarching issue of the present time. A number of aspects of this issue, including the role of education, economic inequality, and the control of the media, are treated in some detail, and proposals for some small steps in the right direction are put forward.
