Abstract

Carers and caring are contemporary global issues of growing political and societal significance. Changing demographics in the UK and beyond, as well as policy drivers promoting community-based living, mean that the family is increasingly the site of care for relatives with long term support needs. Whilst there is a plethora of literature on carers it tends to be situated in separate subject areas. For the first time Family Carers and Caring brings together a range of material and evidence about carers from different sources presented in an accessible and yet academically informed way. Milne and Larkin help to make sense of the complexities of family carers and caring, carving a coherent path through the academic, policy, socio-political, and practice terrain. Family Carers and Caring is explicitly underpinned by principles of social justice and rights, focusing on how inequalities intersect with caring.--

Abstract

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, research demonstrated a significant impact of family caregiving responsibilities on the careers of professionals who work in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM) - especially women. The COVID-19 pandemic increased public recognition of the challenges experienced by caregivers in STEMM fields and created a sense of urgency among many stakeholders. As part of the information-gathering stage of a forthcoming consensus study to address the barriers faced by caregivers, of all genders, in STEMM fields, the Committee on Policies and Practices for Supporting Family Caregivers Working in Science, Engineering, and Medicine organized two national symposia on February 27 and March 27, 2023. Scholars and leaders from a range of sectors convened to identify evidence-based interventions that can support the recruitment, retention, and advancement of caregivers in science, engineering, and medical fields. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussion of the symposia.

Abstract

Abstract

"Tungohan's project traces the arrival of migrant care workers in Canada beginning in the early twentieth century through to the contemporary age in which Filipina migrant care workers constitute nearly 95% of all live-in caregivers in the country. Within that timeline, the project concentrates more fully on the emergent migrant care worker activism which has led to institutional policy changes with both the Foreign Domestics Movement (FDM) and the Live-in Caregiver Program (LCP) -- programs that have placed strict terms on workers. Unlike other migrant worker groups, migrant care workers have been inordinately successful with their activism; besides policy changes, migrant care worker activism has created greater public awareness regarding the rights of migrant care workers, and has formed new organizations that meet the needs of migrant care workers in ways that sending and receiving states cannot or will not. Incorporating seven years of primary and archival research, Tungohan's project examines the types of organizing currently taking place among migrant care workers, the internal dynamics of such organizing, as well as the different activist sites, strategies, and short- and long-term goals that define migrant care worker activism. Through this specified focus on Canadian migrant care workers, Tungohan's project makes greater connections to the role migrant workers play in Western societies. Care activism challenges the stereotype of downtrodden migrant caregivers by showing that care workers have distinct ways of caring for themselves, for each other, and for the larger transnational community of care workers and their families. Ethel Tungohan illuminates how the goals and desires of migrant care worker activists goes beyond political considerations like policy changes and overturning power structures. Through practices of subversive friendships and being there for each other, care activism acts as an extension of the daily work that caregivers do, oftentimes also instilling practices of resistance and critical hope among care workers. At the same time, the communities created by care activism help migrant caregivers survive and even thrive in the face of arduous working and living conditions and the pains surrounding family separation. As Tungohan shows, care activism also unifies caregivers to resist society's legal and economic devaluations of care and domestic work by reaffirming a belief that they, and what they do, are important and necessary"--

Abstract

"After getting her master's in clinical psychology, Dasha Kiper took a leave of absence from school and began to look after a Holocaust survivor with middle-stage Alzheimer's. For a year, she lived with the emotional strain of caregiving, learning at firsthand how disorienting and painful it can be to look after a person whose condition blatantly disregards the rules of time, order, and continuity. Based on the subsequent decade she has spent counseling caregivers of dementia patients, Kiper offers an entirely new approach to understanding the relationship between patients and those tending to them. In these poignant but unsentimental stories of parents and children, husbands and wives, Kiper dispels the myth of the perfect caregiver. Relying on a wide breadth of cognitive and neurological research and borrowing from philosophy and literature, Kiper explores the existential dilemmas created by this disease: a man believes his wife is an impostor; a woman's imaginary friendships with famous authors drive a wedge between her and her devoted husband; another woman's childhood trauma emerges to torment her son; a man's sudden, intense Catholic piety provokes his wife. As painful as these conflicts are for caregivers, resolving them has its own cost. In order to find peace, caregivers try to walk an impossibly fine line between acknowledging what the disease has taken from someone they love and recognizing what it has left"--Publisher's description.

Abstract

Christopher Howard focuses on the poor and offers the first comprehensive map of the US social safety net. He chronicles what Americans say about poverty, and what we do about it, capturing the views of ordinary citizens, business and labour organisations, churches and other charities, and public officials. Although the US social safety net is extensive, Howard argues that major gaps remain, particularly impacting Blacks, Hispanics, and individuals who are not employed full-time. Emphasising how we have spent many years investigating the poor, this book also shines a light on the behavior and views of the non-poor.

Abstract

In Part-Time for All, Jennifer Nedelsky and Tom Malleson propose a plan to radically restructure both work and care and offer a solution to a fundamentally dysfunctional imbalance of work and care obligations. They argue that no competent adult should do paid work for more than 30 hours per week, and everyone should also contribute roughly 22 hours of unpaid care to family, friends, or their chosen community of care. While such a transformation would require radical changes to our cultural norms as well as to our workplace practices, this book carefully dissects the current crisis of care and offers a realistic plan forward.

Abstract
