Abstract

The second edition of this critical text features heavily revised chapters detailing how to approach the anesthetic and perioperative management of adult and pediatric patients with congenital heart disease. Initially, a broad overview of relevant concepts in pediatric cardiovascular embryology, physiology, and pharmacology is provided. Subsequently, relevant diagnostic approaches including the use of three-dimensional modeling in surgical planning and preoperative considerations are described. The intraoperative management of a wide range of specific lesions is discussed, with full descriptions of anesthesia plans and the appropriate diagnostic methods and surgical interventions. New topics detailed include the use of hybrid techniques and applications of electrophysiology in patients with congenital heart disease. Postoperative care and potential future approaches are also addressed. Congenital Heart Disease in Pediatric and Adult Patients: Anesthetic and Perioperative Management provide a comprehensive, up-to-date overview of the care of the pediatric patient undergoing cardiac surgery and anesthesia. It is therefore of interest to all practicing and trainee medical professionals who encounter these patients in their day-to-day practice.

Abstract

The present is bundled with several unique features. It provides up-to-date information on electrocardiograms for almost all electrocardiographic abnormalities covers all aspects of surface electrocardiography in detail. Summaries follow all book chapters for quick revision and MCQs for self-assessment. This book will be helpful to clinicians, fellows in medicine preparing for different careers in cardiology, and ECG technicians and their teachers. The purpose of writing this book - While teaching undergraduates, postgraduates in general medicine, and students of diploma course in cardiac instrument technology, I realized that the students did not have the knowledge of basic concepts of electrocardiography and did not know the clinical significance of various abnormalities. Students, therefore, felt that the subject was difficult to understand and of no clinical significance. Students, therefore, did not feel interested. There was a need for a book that could simplify the subject to the ground level for a beginner who does not know even the basics of electrocardiography. Most of the books in this field are targeted towards cardiologists with an understanding that the reader already has enough knowledge of the basic concepts of electrocardiography. MCQs are the cornerstone for learning, teaching, and evaluation. None of the books in the market gives the idea of MCQs in electrocardiography. What problem does this book solve for the readers? - This book explains various normal and abnormal findings with the help of diagrams and illustrative electrocardiograms. Clinical implications of multiple abnormalities are discussed. This makes the subject easy to understand and to interest for a beginner. MCQs will help the readers in self-assessment. MCQs will also help teachers and examiners in evaluating the students.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus has become epidemic on a global scale, and millions of new cases are diagnosed every year. With an estimated 80% of people with diabetes living in disadvantaged regions, and the key roles of lipoproteins in the pathogenesis of the chronic complications of diabetes, this volume will be relevant to many readers globally. It is our intention that the contents will advance knowledge of the readers who will use it to contribute to the reduction of the burden associated with altered lipoproteins in people with diabetes. The second edition of this book provides an updated and comprehensive review of the field. The book, which includes many tables and figures, is presented in three main sections: (i) Lipoprotein metabolism, qualitative changes and measurements; (ii) Lipoproteins and the complications of diabetes; and (iii) the treatment of lipoproteins in diabetes. Each chapter from the first edition has been updated, and new topics added. New topics include the links between glycemia and lipoproteins, the role of lipoproteins in ischemic stroke, the diagnosis and management of statin intolerance (which is thought to be more common in people with diabetes) and the use of PCSK9 inhibitors and fish oils in the management of lipoproteins in people with diabetes. This book is written by an international group of experts in the clinical, laboratory and research aspects of lipoproteins in diabetes. Lipoproteins in Diabetes Mellitus, 2nd Edition is a comprehensive reference on the clinical and scientific aspects of lipoproteins in diabetes. It is a must-have resource for primary care and specialist clinicians, clinical and basic science researchers and to trainees and students.

Abstract

This book presents the latest findings in the field of cardiac mechanobiology in health and disease. Cardiac mechanobiology provides knowledge of all aspects of mechanobiology of the heart. Cardiomyogenesis is discussed as well as the mechanobiology of cardiac remodeling and regeneration. The molecular mechanisms of mechanoperception and mechanotransduction in cardiomyocytes are explained, as well as stretch induced differentiation of cardiomyocytes derived from induced pluripotent stem cells. This volume of the series Cardiac and Vascular Biology complements the volume Vascular Mechanobiology in Physiology and Disease (volume 8) published in this series. The book is aimed at clinicians as well as researchers in cardiovascular biology, bioengineering and biophysics, and also represents an educational resource for young researchers and students in these fields.

Abstract

This book on "Renin-Angiotensin System in Cardiovascular Disease" includes 25 chapters, which are organized in three sections, namely (i) modulatory aspects, (ii) pathophysiological aspects, and (iii) pharmacotherapeutic aspects. It includes an updated as well as comprehensive knowledge about molecular and cellular aspects for the role of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) in the pathophysiology and therapy of cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension, atherosclerosis, ischemic heart disease, and heart failure. This book emphasizes the molecular and cellular mechanisms, signaling transduction pathways involved in the development of different cardiovascular diseases due to the prolonged activation of RAS. Furthermore, biochemical mechanisms are outlined for the inhibition of this system by the blockade of angiotensin converting enzyme as well as angiotensin II type 1 receptors in patients suffering from cardiovascular abnormalities. Since cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death worldwide, leading to approximately 17.9 million deaths each year, there is a keen interest in understanding the pathogenesis and improving its therapy. In this regard, we can attest that this book provides ample information about essential components of RAS and their role in the development of cardiovascular disease. From the selection of recognized global experts in their area of investigation, this book can be seen to cover diverse cardiovascular aspects and molecular and cellular mechanisms of angiotensin II action for the development of different cardiovascular abnormalities. It is our contention that this book will be most suitable for promoting knowledge in the field of RAS biology and will be of great interest to health professionals involved in both experimental and clinical cardiology as well as academic investigators and cardiovascular scientists, graduate students, and fellows worldwide.
