Schools have the potential to empower communities by connecting people better with the places they live. But how can these benefits be baked into a design brief? As complex institutions, schools not only provide education and pastoral care for children, as they grow and develop, but also act as workplaces for staff and civic assets or hubs for the wider community. Yet they're not often perceived to be critical infrastructure. Community Schools reconsiders what is required from physical school environments, building on the learning gathered from the sector over the past two decades. To meet the new social, environmental and economic challenges it advocates designing differently, both in terms of the form that buildings take and the evaluation of their impact and performance. By calling for a reframing of the way that schools are regarded as community-wide amenities, this book explores the potential for architects to deliver design in a manner that supports healthy lifestyles and promotes wellbeing. Through encouraging social connections, new possibilities open up for educational facilities to become open, welcoming and inclusive.

The twin sisters Selma Mikou and Salwa Mikou founded their own Paris office in 2006 – after working for many years for Jean Nouvel and Renzo Piano. Each project primarily aims to liberate itself from preconceived forms in order to create original solutions that focus on the dimension of an emotional spatial experience. The architects have produced numerous prominent buildings in this way, including the Balsanéo Aquatics Center in Châteauroux (2021), which was developed as a dynamic figure that spans the boulevard like a bridge to overlook the unique landscape of the Indre region.

The name Maria Montessori is widely associated with a child-centered and careful pedagogy. Montessori schools became trendsetting educational institutions early on, and their philosophy is strongly reflected in their equipment, adapted environment, and architecture. Montessori Architecture is the first book to comprehensively address the architectural design, construction, and use of materials in and the furnishing of educational spaces according to Maria Montessori's visionary ideas. The book's first part explores spatial design patterns that make up exemplary kindergarten and school buildings. In the second part, nine case studies from Europe as well as from tropical countries are featured in detail through photographs, plans, and concise texts. This highly illustrative book offers a wealth of information and practical guidelines for architects, teachers, and others engaged in creating stimulating learning environments for children.

Its colour reflects the mineral content in local clay, and a variety of brick sizes and construction methods make masonry a highly flexible option for construction. The traditional building material is more in demand today than ever before. Easy to dismantle and recycle, energy-efficient and sustainable, brick can be used across a wide range of applications.Brickwork Buildings S, M, L showcases 30 buildings of various sizes with inspiring photos and in-depth construction details. From small residential buildings, museums and schools to university buildings, cultural centres and even residential towers, the book shows its many potential uses.
