Resumen (revisado) The tourism research article (RA) has not been the focus of many studies. This volume offers a description of the genre in terms of section, besides an analysis of the most used language features in each section of the RA. Among these are the presence of modal verbs. Precisely, the goal of this work is to describe their use, meaning and functions in a corpus of the "introduction" and "conclusion" sections of the RA in tourist studies. The compilations included texts from leading journals in the area. The method of inquiry includes corpus linguistics tools to analyze texts as well as specific examples to show how these forms behave in the RAs. The analysis of context is also essential in order to identify the exact meanings of modal verbs, and for that reason visual inspection of each sample is mandatory. The discussion of the evidence obtained is accounted for by studies in the domain of functional linguistics. The conclusions show that formal variation exists in the introduction and the conclusion sections. This also applies to their meanings. Dynamic modality is attested to be more recurrent in the introductions and epistemic modality is preferred in the concluding sections. The functions performed by these modals are varied to feature interpersonal and textual cues in the elaboration of meaning in the RA.

This collection explores the links between multimodality and multilingualism, charting the interplay between languages, channels, and forms of communication in multilingual written texts from historical manuscripts through to the new media of today and the non-verbal associations they evoke.

"Modality is a vast phenomenon. In fact, it is arguably a plurality of phenomena. Within it, one type of modality warrants distinctive interest in philosophy and, in particular, in metaphysics. In view of this, Section 2 of this Element is devoted to modality as a general phenomenon; different types of modalities are distinguished, and the question of unification is raised. Following this, Section 3 is focused on metaphysical modality: the type of modality that is of distinctive interest in metaphysics, and thus for this Elements series. In Section 3, the overarching question is about the source of metaphysical modality, and the discussion here informs, and it informed by, the question of unification discussed in Section 2"

This book concerns the philosophical analysis of modal sentences. David Lewis' Modal Translation Scheme 'translates' sentences of quantified modal logic into sentences of predicate logic supplemented by counterpart theory. A number of theoretical advantages are thereby secured. One component of the translation scheme makes reference to non-actual but possible worlds i.e. the primitive predicate "at a world(s), w". The author addresses the problem of advanced modal sentences which threaten this predicate and so the ability of genuine realism to secure the aforementioned theoretical benefits. The problem of advanced modal sentences is a relatively new field of philosophical research. This ground-breaking book will primarily be of interest to researchers in modality, particularly those working in this field.

This edited volume brings together two largely separate fields - organization studies and multimodal social semiotics - to develop an integrated research agenda for the novel interdisciplinary field of 'organizational semiotics'. Organizations, whether for profit, non-profit, or governmental, dominate much of everyday life, and multimodal communication is not only an output of organizations, it is constitutive of them. This volume argues in particular for the importance of organization studies for social semioticians: not just as a site of application, but as a critical contemporary context which requires novel and expanded methods of analysis and critique, and new practices of partnership. The volume addresses a range of institutions and sectors, from civil to retail to medical, from corporations to universities, and reveals how a deep engagement with their meaning-making practices produces insights not just about communication but also about the broader contemporary cultural context in which organizations play such a significant role. Fundamentally, it reveals that the rich analytical and theoretical resources of multimodal perspectives on organizations studies can - and should - make a fundamental contribution to our understanding of organizations in social life. This volume is relevant to social semioticians and organizational researchers, as well as to practitioners and decision-makers in organizations.

Modal verbs in English communicate delicate shades of meaning, there being a large range of verbs both on the necessity side (must, have to, should, ought to, need, need to) and the possibility side (can, may, could, might, be able to). They therefore constitute excellent test ground to apply and compare different methodologies that can lay bare the factors that drive the speaker’s choice of modal verb. This book is not merely concerned with a purely grammatical description of the use of modal verbs, but aims at advancing our understanding of lexical and grammatical units in general and of linguistic methodologies to explore these. It thus involves a genuine effort to compare, assess and combine a variety of approaches. It complements the leading descriptive qualitative work on modal verbs by testing a diverse range of quantitative methods, while not ignoring qualitative issues pertaining to the semantics-pragmatics interface. Starting from a critical assessment of what constitutes the meaning of modal verbs, different types of empirical studies (usage-based, data-driven and experimental), drawing considerably on the same data sets, shows how method triangulation can contribute to an enhanced understanding. Due attention is also given to individual variation as well as the degree to which modals can predict L2 proficiency level.

This book explores the ways in which multimodality and multilingualism as areas of study intersect and provides empirical examples of how this looks in practice from a wide range of settings. It argues that the everyday practices of multilingual communities are multimodal in nature.

This volume approaches the interaction of evidentiality with some other related categories, such as modality and mirativity, from an innovative angle: its connection to informational configuration. It provides an innovative theoretical view as well as a robust typological, crosslinguistic perspective.
