A detailed exploration of how more than fifty of the most iconic chairs from the last 150 years were conceived and made―the design principles, the material selection, the manufacturing processes, and the designers and architects behind them. Chairs are one of the most integral design pieces to everyday life: from office chairs to dining tables, from lounging to working, the importanceof good chair design is central to our well-being. Accordingly, designers and architects seeking solutions to space, comfort, and function, have grappled with making the perfect―or most unusual―chairs for centuries. But since consumers only see the end result, we rarely think about why each design is special. This expanded edition of Chair Anatomy reveals the form and the construction detail―that is, the anatomy―of a selection of more than fifty chairs from the last 150 years of modern chair design. James Orrom introduces readers to the designers, their backgrounds, and their reasons for creating each product, bringing together photographs, illustrations, and a truly nuts-and-bolts perspective on masterpieces of design. New to this edition is the inclusion of four new chairs with technical and constructional originality, from chairs made from recyclable plastics and sustainable hemp-fibers to designs based on the principle of a clothes-peg. In reducing chairs to their constituent parts, the book gets to the heart of each design: how pieces are designed and produced to fit together; why a particular material imparts a certain quality, functional advance, or comfort level; and how the chair’s structure can withstand stress while being elegant and economical to produce. In short, a chair is architecture in miniature.

Cast materials become solid, yet they originate as fluid materials that can take on any imaginable form. This simple yet radical paradigm allows for the exploration of volumetric formations through process-oriented casting and experimentation with alternative ways of manufacturing, presenting, and shaping casting molds.Working with hardening bodies fundamentally challenges the notion of formal rigidity; conventional formwork models are reconsidered, and a new aesthetic emerges.Fluid Bodies presents a variety of objects created using alternative casting methods. The book documents experimental artistic research and showcases innovative and surprising sculptures in concrete and plaster.

Along with urban planning and architecture, design played a central role in shaping the socialist future. On both sides of the Iron Curtain, it was above all the issue of housing that became the yardstick of the successful implementation of visions of a better world. Beginning in Berlin with its early housing exhibitions which took place in an atmosphere that was shaped by political rivalry and the pathos of progress, this publication focuses on the (post-)Soviet satellite states. It explores the socio-political dimension of housing and the role of design between utopia, power and gender discourses. In their texts, 25 experts from around the world present different designs and interiors. They cover a wide range of objects from kitchen utensils to space rockets. The book thus makes a significant contribution to the current discourse on (post-)socialist design, which is gaining increasing academic attention especially internationally. For the first time, authors originating from the various (post-)Soviet countries have worked together on a publication: it fills an important lacuna in the study of the history of design.

Hermann Czech, born in 1936, is one of Austria's most eminent and influential architects and theorists. This influence is based not only on his work as a designing architect, which extends to furniture, interiors, and exhibitions. Czech is also widely admired just as much for his writings on architectural theory and as the editor and translator of classics of architectural history, including texts by Otto Wagner, Adolf Loos, Josef Frank, and Christopher Alexander, among others. This book is the long-awaited updated and expanded English edition of the only full monograph on Hermann Czech to date. First published in German in 2018, it goes far beyond a mere presentation of an architecture practice's buildings and projects. The first part traces what links Czech's work to the approaches of Viennese modernism. The second part explores Czech's biography and the trajectory of his career, analyzing as well the contemporary influences that shape his thinking and designs. The third part features selected buildings and unrealized projects, setting forth also Czech's numerous references and underlying reflections. A complete index of his buildings, projects, and writings, an essay by Vienna-based philosopher Elisabeth Nemeth on the relationship between architecture and philosophy in Czech's work, and an introduction by architectural historian Liane Lefaivre round off this volume. Bron : https://www.copyrightbookshop.be/shop/vrouwen-in-de-vormgeving-1880-1940-in-nederland/

This visually stunning love letter to the art of craft takes readers inside Europe’s most illustrious—and in many cases endangered—decorative arts workshops to profile how artisans continue to maintain the highest centuries-old standards of workmanship and creativity.Beginning in the Renaissance, ateliers were established as places for European artists to work and teach their crafts. Centuries later most of these spaces have disappeared, but a select few continue to produce some of the world’s most celebrated and sought-after objects in the areas of crystal, ceramics, wrought iron, fabric, bookbinding, mosaic, wood paneling, and more. John Whelan and Oskar Proctor traveled throughout Europe to document these important spaces, both to celebrate them and to preserve their disappearing ideals. Ranging from the well- known to the obscure, this volume takes readers inside dozens of ateliers from Austria, England, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Switzerland. Sumptuous double-page spreads feature alluring photography, and fascinating background texts tell their stories. By shining a light on their collective value as well as their individual expertise, this book offers both a historic evaluation of how ateliers have been shaped by modern forces—and also a clarion call for their preservation.
