Abstract

This book 'Essays on Contemporary Psychometrics' provides an overview of contemporary psychometrics, the science devoted to the advancement of quantitative measurement practices in psychology, education and the social sciences. The volume consists of four parts, each having several chapters on cutting-edge work in the field. Part I, General Perspectives on Psychometrics, includes expert views on topics such as psychological models vs. measurement models, using tests in decision making, artificial intelligence, and psychometric network models. Part II, Factor Analysis and Classical Test Theory, the type of psychometrics that is still used most often in the social and behavioral sciences, includes state-of-the-art contributions on test-score reliability, change-score reliability, handling missing data in principal component analysis, test equating, and conditional standard errors of measurement. Part III, Item Response Theory, the leading form of psychometrics in modern educational measurement, includes discussions of sampling from many conditional distributions, transparent score reporting, nonparametric item response theory, and targeted testing. Part IV, New Psychometrics, discusses recently developed ideas beyond classical test theory and item response theory, including topics related to computer adaptive testing, response-time modelling, validity indices, diagnostic classification models, and the sparse latent class model for ordinal measurements. Together, these four parts provide an overview of the current state-of-the-art in psychometrics in educational measurement. They are a valuable source of information for graduate students who (intend to) study psychometrics and need an overview of the field, and for researchers interested in the current developments in the field. Chapters [3], [5], [8], [16] and [19] are available open access under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License via link.springer.com.

Abstract

"Advancing Natural Language Processing in Educational Assessment examines the use of natural language technology in educational testing, measurement, and assessment. Recent developments in natural language processing (NLP) have enabled large-scale educational applications, though scholars and professionals may lack a shared understanding of the strengths and limitations of NLP in assessment as well as the challenges that testing organizations face in implementation. This first-of-its-kind book provides evidence-based practices for the use of NLP-based approaches to automated text and speech scoring, language proficiency assessment, technology-assisted item generation, gamification, learner feedback, and beyond. Spanning historical context, validity and fairness issues, emerging technologies, and implications for feedback and personalization, these chapters represent the most robust treatment yet about NLP for education measurement researchers, psychometricians, testing professionals, and policymakers"--

Abstract

This book delves into how Japanese schools evaluate and enhance education quality through lesson study, curriculum management, and school self-evaluation. It explores the concept of “understanding by design” in the context of the historical background and the challenges of the present, providing practical methods of educational evaluation for the future. Through in-depth case studies of two primary schools, readers gain a comprehensive understanding of educational evaluation and improvement. The book proposes a new theoretical framework for a comprehensive quality care process that links lesson study, curriculum management, and school evaluation. Based on authentic assessment, the strategies and examples presented can be applied to any quality system. The conclusion offers core ideas for successful implementation of educational evaluation and improvement. This book is essential reading for teachers and school leaders seeking to build their schools’ quality systems, and for researchers and graduate students interested in improving educational evaluation.

Abstract

This book describes language testing practices that exist in the intermediate space between large-scale standardized testing and classroom assessment, an area that is rarely addressed in language testing literature. Drawing empirical research on a variety of languages, the volume discusses local language tests’ ability to represent local contexts and values, explicitly and purposefully embed test results within instructional practice, and provide data for program evaluation and research. Although local testing practices have been grounded in the theoretical principles of language testing, the authors in this volume supplement the theoretical content with practical examples of how local tests can be designed to effectively function within and across different institutional contexts. .

Abstract

This book transforms our current understanding of assessment practice in different educational settings and cultures. Drawing upon the resources of language games and critical realism the authors argue for an innovative engagement with the philosophical, theoretical and practical foundations of assessment. What is the connection between learning, motivation and assessment? Is assessment for learning a motorway or a blind alley for improved learning outcomes? How can creativity be assessed through the eyes of the connoisseur? How can assessment cultures be understood as forms of life and language games? Do new forms of society transform our assessment practices? A critical appreciation of the work of Royce Sadler is offered for assessment specialists.

Abstract

"Blended teaching represents a great opportunity to enhance the entire educational experience. Much has happened in the past two years, and the debate has rapidly increased in both the academia and business landscapes. Shedding light on the latest trends, challenges and practices is a must today. The book addresses these topics brilliantly." —Leonardo Caporarello, Deputy Dean for Lifelong Learning, SDA Bocconi School of Management, Italy. This book examines synchronous and asynchronous teaching in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Within a few weeks, millions of teachers found themselves forced to teach online, often with little systematic preparation and in their own homes. While this mode of teaching was earlier seen to be supplementary to brick-and-mortar classes, online teaching has become pivotal to the classroom experience. The chapter authors write of shared experiences that encapsulate the challenges faced by faculty, students and also higher education institutions. The book covers what worked, what did not work and what had to be changed during the rapid shift to online synchronous and asynchronous teaching during the lockdowns. Comprising both theoretical and practical perspectives, this book provides one of the first authoritative analyses of the field, while gathering lessons to be learned from the pandemic. Payal Kumar is Dean of Research and Management Studies at the Indian School of Hospitality, Delhi, India. Jacob Eisenberg is Associate Professor in the Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School at University College Dublin, Ireland.
