La littérature comparée est à entendre comme la science comparative de la littérature, une branche des sciences humaines et sociales qui se propose d’étudier les productions humaines signalées comme œuvres littéraires, sans que soit définie au préalable quelque frontière, notamment linguistique, que ce soit. Il ne s’agit pas tant de "comparer des littératures" que de questionner la littérature (au sens de collection d’œuvres) en plaçant chaque œuvre, ou chaque texte, dans des séries élaborées par le chercheur, qui interrogent la singularité relative de cette œuvre. Les comparatistes construisent ainsi des espaces où ils se heurtent volontairement à des œuvres venues de pratiques et de cultures "autres" : l’étranger est leur pierre de touche. Cet ouvrage présente un état documenté des orientations actuelles de cette discipline, et suggère quelques perspectives susceptibles de contribuer à un humanisme moderne.

The 17 contributions in this volume pursue a positioning of the philologies, which - based on the 'Volksgeist' (popular spirit) of the 19th century and the cultural studies of the 20th century - must reposition themselves in the 21st century. The contributions address questions such as: What changes are occurring with increasing globalization? Are national literatures increasingly being absorbed into the so-called "world literature"? The authors come from the fields of Romance studies, German studies and English studies. They deal with topics of literary historiography, canonization, comparative literature, and also questions of the future. This book is a translation of an original German edition. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation.

This comparative Polish-Italian study explores the comic potential of metafiction, and illustrates it with the examples drawn from drama works of Luigi Pirandello and Witold Gombrowicz. It is the first publication which juxtaposes this aspect of both writers' works, and the theoretical model elaborated by the author allows reading works by other authors in this context.
