Abstract

Our built and unbuilt environment is confronted with the homogenizing effects of globalization, necessitating a transformative response. This reflection paper explores the pressing need for a care-taking approach to space, considering the paradoxical coexistence of vacant spaces and grand real estate projects, as well as the diminishing presence of nature in urban areas. By challenging the predetermined and embracing uncertainties, can we uncover latent potentials and envision alternative futures? This requires active participation, the appreciation of unintentional qualities, and a rejection of finality (embracing of unfinishedness). Showcasing these qualities, we can reshape our environments as political instruments that reflect and challenge social hierarchies. This reflection aims to question how we can leave a positive imprint on the world.

Abstract

Last November, we travelled to Porto, Portugal to see the famous works of Siza and Fernando, among others, and this study trip gave me so many powerful memories that will be the background of this project. I collaborated with Jinru Wu on a multi-faceted study of PISCINAS DAS MARES, a swimming pool that blends into the Atlantic Ocean, and CASA ROCHA RIBEIRO, a private residence that was an invaluable experience to visit, and we marvelled at Siza's sensitivity to the natural environment. He uses the architecture to create so many details to blend in with nature, using the artificial to mould the building into a part of nature, designing every free space with precision. This project site is located on a hill in the northern part of Namur, surrounded by mostly residential areas, with a quiet atmosphere that gives me a strong sense of life, but when I visited the site I felt that the texture of the area was still mainly linear with streets and houses along them. I wanted to design a node within this linear urban grain, a community centre that reconnects all the residents of this neighbourhood, and two single volumes for the elderly and children who have more time on their hands. The elderly and the children are also the two poles of the age line and the interconnection of these two groups is sure to create an interesting spark. I wanted the public building that reconnects the neighbourhood to be a simple and harmonious combination with the sloping site with its original highland greenery, where people can find their own place to stay and interact without the burden of doing so, in line with the relationship between architecture and nature that I experienced in Portugal last autumn. Enjoying the sun and the breeze of the sloping hill.

Abstract

This paper examines the significance of attachments and roots in the context of migration, highlighting how migrants maintain a connection with their homeland and actively reflect their attachments to their new environments. These reflections have far-reaching effects that can transform cityscapes in distant lands from their place of origin. One of the extreme examples of these reflections can occur in the case of social movements in their motherlands. Despite the ephemeral and unpredictable nature of these reflections within the built environment, they are relevant to architecture and urbanism. Using the “Woman, Life, Freedom” (WFL), the recent social movement in Iran as a case study, I tried to question the role of architecture and urbanism. The impact of these reactions on cityscapes is approached through the lens of signs and symbols. I tried to examine the symbolization by defining a sign on social media as a symbol of this movement, the red squares. This symbol is then translated into architectural form, resulting in the concept of red cubes. The aim is to move beyond sculpture and make these symbols inhabitable and functional. Drawing from firsthand experiences of participating in WFL demonstrations in European cities and engaging in discussions with Europeans who possessed some understanding of the movement, albeit not a complete one, the concept of a contemplation museum emerged. This museum would be dedicated to telling the story of the movement, allowing outsiders to experience and engage with it. The presence of symbols in this context serves not only to evoke emotions but also to inform visitors. Furthermore, the paper explores the potential of cyberspace as a container for the dynamic narrative of the WFL movement. It suggests that cyberspaces can be constructed and experienced as physical spaces, harnessing their inherent capacity for dynamism and fluidity. This approach opens up possibilities for accommodating the evolving nature of social movements within a virtual realm.

Abstract

In this master dissertation I am proposing a new typology, in order to address the housing crisis and displacement that is occurring in the city of Chicago, more specifically in the area of Pilsen. This typology consists of giving a second birth to the industrial buildings, often left to their faith, on the riverside in Pilsen. The buildings would be managed by co-operatives formed by inhabitants that want to claim their space back in the neighborhood instead of being obliged to leave due to the rising popularity and, the rising prices of housing. The need to address the living typology differently is present and needs to be developed in order to maintain communities and families living in the area for decades and lately suffering from the changing neighborhood.

Abstract

This paper, through a greenification strategy, it redefines this idiosyncratic built environment into a sustainable urban wilderness, fusing past and future, reintroducing Landbouwbelang in the urban fabric of Maastricht, aiming to bring about a transitional yet inclusive threshold, an in-between space serving as a platform for increased social and cultural interaction open to all, in a non-anthropocentric exclusive scope. The final aim is to offer a proposal to re-introduce this fallen in disuse Industrial Heritage embedded in the collective memory of the inhabitants of Maastricht, to activate the new dynamics between the site and its surrounding Urban Fabric which however latent currently, it offers great potential of increased social dynamics resulting finally in a much greater and inclusive sense of place for this particular site. As we strive for a more resilient future for the newly proposed Landbouwbelang, the intrinsic importance of the historical and cultural values that this site has in itself embedded in the last decades and centuries, this hard core heritage must form and un-alienating part on its future. Making use of a fair amount of research and the necessary imagination in conceptualising life-moments gone through at Landbouwbelang, along with a strong drive to engage the project and sheer hard will, following a sustainable greenification strategy, this industrial sleeping-giant can be reabsorbed in Maastricht’s urban fabric. The proposal of this paper, seeks in bringing together in a sort of considerate amalgamation, the native natural element that surround the site and the people of Maastricht under the shadow of the Landbouwbelang. Allowing that the recent industrial past, be absorbed by an older and much longer typology of existence, by allowing the wild to retake by design the building, offer to Maastricht an sustainable Urban Wilderness along the bank of the Meuse. The practices that it will foment in its new existence rely on bringing about the cultural and social interaction between its human users. Through a combination of experiences and practices that would find place in different formats and level of engagement, spanning from passively experiencing the place to active learning, the Landbouwbelang will have plenty to offer to an array of users, including those otherwise-abled in order to provide for a major inclusivity. As it has done in its recent past, Landbouwbelang will continue to a fertile site for cultural interaction as well, by supporting both the supply and demand side, allowing for spaces to create and experience art. However the users of the newly proposed Landbouwbelang are not limited to only one particular sort, namely the human one. It greenification strategy follows a non-anthropocentric reflective design where the “wild” and its accommodation receives the adequate attention and dedication. By allowing the native flora to re-appropriate by design the site, the foundations are set to allow for a relative fauna also to claim it right to the site. Through design enhanced specifications and opportunities for increased wild-friendliness, incorporated also in the building interventions, this new uncommon user of this former industrial site will rightfully appropriate its share of the site’s future. The joint appropriation of the new Landbouwbelang, is designed to foresee a balanced and considerate dynamic between men and wild. Sustainability is yet another strong element integrated in the future

Abstract

This dissertation is devoted to Brussels, hosting so many different people from around the world, including myself, a young woman from Switzerland who has been exploring Brussels and its layers for the past two years. I was, and still am, since the beginning fascinated by the city and its contrasts which are often found just next to each other. Brussels stands out as a hyper-diverse metropolis with a melting pot of cultures, languages, and traditions within such a little perimeter. It‘s a place where people from all over the world have migrated and come to settle, creating a composition of vibrant and dynamic atmospheres. This coexistence of cultures and communities is resulting in a mosaic of identities, where diverse groups are still geographically segregated. After examining the multifaced nature of Brussels through the lens of an architect, I’m seeing the potential for Brussels to be an exciting hub of intercultural interactions. Meaning that the city needs spaces that foster interaction among individuals from different ethnic backgrounds. Spaces that are neutral in a way, where different identities can be kept. The aim is not to unify but to find a common ground. This project sheds light on a different way of doing architecture that goes beyond designing buildings. Instead, architecture is about designing situations and addressing spatial problems through form and shape. By exploring different spatial configurations, we gain a deeper understanding of how form and shape can embody concepts such as equality, unity, individuality, and appropriation. In this context, I’m introducing another architectural language in form of spheres. Spheres offer an alternative approach to gathering and interacting, prioritizing shared interests over traditional criteria like cultural or geographical backgrounds. Their neutral architecture provides inclusive and accommodating spaces, bridging gaps between communities, and encouraging interactions between individuals who may not typically cross paths. This approach promotes diversity, cross-cultural understanding, and the exploration of new ideas, making spheres valuable incubators for innovation and collective problem-solving. By exploring the interplay between diverse cultures and the transformative potential of such spheres, this dissertation seeks to contribute to the broader discourse on migration, urbanism, and cultural diversity, ultimately highlighting the vital role that cities like Brussels play in shaping our collective future.

Abstract

Abstract

This intervention is a multi-scalar proposition with a major focus on a better flood resilience. The buildings studied are Palazzo Del Cinema and Palazzo Del Casino. Functional dikes and a secretive defense wall are built to absorb the water and stop it in case it rises. They can also be used by the locals in multiple configurations accordingly. Moreover, a path is crossing the buildings following the interior streetscapes and providing many levels of accessibility and visibility that connect the buildings to the context around them. The buildings are reappropriated to be used as a Film Institute to increase the level of productivity of the area that currently remains abandoned. Various spatial organization principles are taken into account to provide flexible and adaptable spaces for the students/visitors and to activate the buildings bringing the productivity from 30% to 90%.

Abstract

Abstract

The notion of a stranger can be melancholic when detachment resides. In terms of architecture, the stranger can be a symbol of unity, diversification and a gift bearer to a society where certain bonds are formed. This project is the interpretation of a personal experience in the Jean Felix Hap Park located in Etterbeek, Brussels. The concept of Hortus Conclusus has been widely used and interchanged across history and civilizations yet, the purpose remained the same, a place of inner peace and sanctity, shielded from the outside world. By exploring the surroundings of the park, I instantly reflected on the enclosed garden’s concept while witnessing the whereabouts. The more I investigated while both experiencing the park firsthand and through extensive research, the more I figured out how much of a symbiotic relationship this place provides for nature, humans and architecture. After studying the behavior of plants, I went on to explore the elements of the park and stumbled upon the abandoned house which is the core of this project. A static asset, survivor of generations and changes across time, this house was screaming for a new identity. Upon inspecting its surroundings and interior, the structure was a hollow shell of memories, currently used as a storage space for gardening. What was even more particular about this house was its location, standing alone, mighty yet frail, glowing yet gloomy. After exploring its interior walls, aspects and potential, this house was a sanctum of its own, lodged in another sanctum. This house spoke to me in more ways than I could have imagined, as if we were both strangers in an environment reaching for belonging. The simplest way an architect can implement changes is through drastic and extreme changes such as demolishing or replacing them with newer materials. However, this does not pay respect to nature nor architecture as a discipline. By utilizing the exact same materials found in the park and specifically in the house, I have enhanced the latter, added amenities and created a habitable space as a gift to the community and to the structure itself, attempting to give it back its integrity.
