Abstract

"When does religious accommodation undermine the autonomy of others? On what grounds should religious accommodation claims be limited? This book offers an original model of religious accommodation which can be applied in practice in secular liberal democracies where religious diversity continues to pose various challenges. Firstly, the book makes a case for religious accommodation by addressing the key normative challenges raised by religious claims. Secondly, it offers a typology of how religious claims can be managed and limited through the careful balancing of competing interests. The author draws on case study examples from jurisdictions subject to the European Court of Human Rights and the European Union's Court of Justice such as the UK, Germany and France. The result is a timely contribution to the debate on how a legal duty or policy approach in favour of religious accommodation can be applied in practice. Moreover, the proposed model offers criteria that can be used to guide the implementation of equality policies in contexts such as employment and education. The book will be of interest to academics, legal practitioners and policy-makers."--

Abstract

Maintaining an Orderly Society in the Age of Revolution: Religious Toleration in the Habsburg Empire, 1792-1848 covers the tumultuous period in the Habsburg Empire from Joseph II's failed reforms through the Revolutions of 1848, documenting the ongoing struggle between religious activism and civil peace. In the name of stability, the Habsburg Empire sidelined Catholic activists and promoted religious toleration during this era in which Austria was an international symbol of conservatism and other states engaged in strident confessional politics. Austria's well-known fear of disorder and revolution in this notoriously conservative regime extended to Catholics, and the state utilized the censors and police to institutionalize religious toleration, which it viewed as essential to law and order, and to tame religious passions, which officials feared could mobilize public opinion in unpredictable directions. The state's growing use of police power had wide-reaching consequences for refugees, women, and empire-building. By the end of the nineteenth century, the Habsburg Empire would become known as a multinational and multicultural state, but this toleration was the product of the infamously conservative and rigid regime that ruled Austria in the decades after the French Revolution and until the Revolutions of 1848. While the Habsburgs typically are associated with Catholicism, 1780 to 1848 marked the only era in which the Habsburgs tried to disassociate themselves politically from Catholicism. Though civil peace and religious toleration eventually became the norm, this book documents the decades of heavy-handed state efforts to get there.

Abstract

"At present, variable-frequency, positional and tracking electric drives (ED), which perform controlled convesion of electric energy into the energy of mechanical motion of working bodies, are the main executive part of the automation systems of industrial mechanisms, machines and technological facilities. The scope of variable-frequency EDs is rather large: from high-power electric engineering to various areas of utilities and household devices. The use of variable-frequency ED makes it possible to reduce electricity consumption by 20-50% due to the application of mechanisms in which the motors are designed for maximum load, and the average daily load is 60-80%. At the same time, the operating conditions of motors and mechanisms in general are improved due to the exclusion of dynamic shocks, starting overloads and current limitations Thus, the use of variable-frequency ED allows creating an efficient energy-saving technology, the use of which enables not only saving electricity but also increasing the service life of the equipment. However, despite the simplicity and efficiency of modern variable-frequency ED systems, their proper functioning depends on the reliable operation of the motor, the three-phase off-line voltage invertor and the control system, as each of these components may malfunction. Electric motor malfunctions are the most significant share of the variable-frequency ED faults. The most essential percentage of IM failures is caused by the damage in the stator power circuit. In most cases, such a damage develops gradually and eventually results in the complete failure of the electric machine. That is, IM operates for a long time with a damage in the early stages of its development. Such operating modes are characterized by the fact that the system does not lose its operability, but the indicators of the control quality significantly worsen. The energy efficiency of the energy conversion process deteriorates; the energy losses essentially increase and variable components of electromagnetic torque and active power consumption appear. Long operation of ED systems in such modes results in the further development of defects, and, ultimately, in the complete failure of the electric machine, which may cause accidents. The termination of ED systems operation due to the above problems, on the one hand, and the ever-increasing trend of expanding the scope of variable-frequency ED with an IM in industry, on the other hand, turns the issue of their reliability and fault tolerance into the problem of paramount importance. The timely detection and elimination of IM damage in the early stages of their development can extend the technological equipment life and reduce the financial losses caused by unforeseen shutdown of the equipment due to technological failure or failure of IM. Thus, fault-tolerant control systems (FTC) are of particular interest. They are capable of detecting various types of damage at the initial stage and promptly adapt the control law in such a way as to preserve the ED operability for a long period of time until the possibility of IM repair or replacement occurs. That is, the most efficient use of the FTC system is industrial equipment, which should continue to operate despite the deterioration of dynamic performance and energy efficiency"--

Abstract

Allergies are a significant health issue, yet few books exist on allergen tolerance of separation; here the author classifies allergen tolerance breakdown in specific types, according to the possibility that the autonomic breakdown of allergen tolerance in the unified airway depends on a deficit of pro-tolerogenic neurotransmitters at the local level. This paradigm, which explains the pathogenesis of allergic disorders, opens to new approaches to allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT). While focusing on the new atopic disorders of the unified airway, such as local allergic rhinitis, "dual" allergic rhinitis, local allergic asthma, and local allergic conjunctivitis, the work combines clinical examples of allergic diseases and their treatment with their immunological background. The topics range from the specific immune-derived maintenance of allergen tolerance and the role of the neuroimmune network in allergic inflammation to conventional atopic diseases and more particular issues of local atopic disorders in the unified airway, oral tolerance, and its breakdown, and its translation in genitourinary aspects of allergic inflammation. Specific chapters are also devoted to allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT) and anti-allergy treatments. Thought for upper graduate students, it will also be a valued resource for allergy practitioners, pulmonologists, ENT specialists, pediatricians, and translational researchers, Textbook of Allergen Tolerance includes classical didactic features such as abstracts, keywords, background notes, discussion points, and Q&A., as well as 20 audio files Text-to-Speech for the visually impaired, and 10 video to support the readers. .

Abstract

This Special Issue in renal transplantation covers a variety of clinical and research areas in kidney transplantation. The recent decade is associated with an ongoing shortage of organs for transplantation with efforts to increase the organ pool with DCDs and extended criteria donors. However, with the increasing success rate of kidney transplants, there is also a growth in the candidate list because of removal of the age barrier and transplantation of high risk patients with other comorbidities. The future seems promising with the development of innovative non-invasive technologies introducing biomarkers for diagnosis of rejection and ischemic reperfusion injury, use of cell therapy for tolerance induction, development of artificial organs, and overcoming immune and non-immune barriers in xenotransplantation. This Special Issue will touch some of these topics that are in the frontiers of the modern era of kidney transplantation.

Abstract

La modalité sociale (différents hébergement sociaux ou isolement) et psychomotrice (exercice physique avec roue d’activité motrice) seront investiguées Drug addiction is strongly caused by sustainable neurobehavioural adaptations due to repeated exposure to a drug. Some of these adaptations lead to an increase behavioural response to the same drug. This phenomenon is called "behavioural sensitisation" or "reverse tolerance". In contrast, other adaptations lead to a decrease in behavioural responses. This phenomenon is called "behavioural tolerance". Behavioural sensitization is a key concept in contemporary drug and alcohol theory and may explain the transition from moderate drinking to an alcohol syndrome. Alcohol sensitization and tolerance are particularly related to environmental conditions. Enriched/dappoverished environmental conditions, especially during childhood and adolescence, are widely considered to be the main factors influencing the development of alcoholism. The present study aimed to examine the preventive effects of different housing conditions on sensitization and behavioural tolerance induced by chronic ethanol exposure in mice. The social (different social accommodation or isolation) and psychomotor (physical exercise with running wheel) modality will be investigated.

Abstract

"The religious minorities of Iraq suffered immense violence at the hands of ISIS and they are now trying to rebuild their lives. In their own words, this book tells their stories of resilience against oppression, creativity in the darkest moments, and hope amidst death. Covering the experiences of the Christians, Kakais, Yezidis, Sunni Muslims and Shabaks, among others, this is an in-depth investigation that reveals how the different communities narrate their beliefs and deal with life and recovery in the aftermath of ISIS. Existing literature on the religious minorities in Iraq treats them in isolation as if they do not interact. This is the first book to show that a strong network between them operates in the absence of a strong civil society and based on a common desire to coexist, reconstruct their society and build peace. Over three years, the author visited religious and archaeological sites and interviewed more than one hundred people between representatives of the religious communities, academics, activists, politicians, policy makers and refugees. Among them are victims and persecutors, men, women and children, all who have been overwhelmed by the tragic events of the last few years. The author shows that all these groups are animated by the same desire for a new, more tolerant society and that their treatment of each other is nurtured by their shared experience of persecution and oppression"--

Abstract

In 1945, Sukarno declared that the new Indonesian republic would be grounded on monotheism, while also insisting that the new nation would protect diverse religious practice. This book explores how the state, civil society groups and individual Indonesians have experienced the attempted integration of minority and majority religious practices and faiths across the archipelagic state over the more than half century since Pancasila.
