Abstract

Redox reactions are involved in biochemistry, energy, corrosion, and much more. In both biology and electrochemistry, the redox reaction is complex and varied. For example, redox shuttles in supercapacitors show aspects of molecular electrochemistry applied to electrode porosity. In pseudocapacitors, the formalism associated with their electrochemical response requires investigation and formalism. Similarly, the simple definition of redox potential opens fundamental questions about its measurement in solutions without supporting salts. This book illustrates the variety of redox reactions in its examination of the importance of redox molecules in the development of new electrical energy storage devices.

Abstract

This document summarizes the work of a multidisciplinary group of twelve experts, brought together by Inserm (French National Institute for Health and Medical Research) as part of a collective expert report procedure (Appendix) at the request of the French health authorities. The review, originally published in French, explores the health and socio-economic burden of alcohol consumption and is based on the academic literature available in the first half of 2020. Nearly 3,600 articles constituted the document base for this expert report. The analysis covers recent data on alcohol consumption levels and patterns, the impact of alcohol on health (including low consumption levels and also damage specific to the perinatal period), the socio-economic costs of alcohol, risk factors for consumption, and aspects related to the marketing and lobbying activities of the alcohol industry. Measures for reducing alcohol-related harm are examined and evaluated, including primary and secondary prevention (restricting supply and demand, screening, interventions, alcohol abstinence challenges), as well as management of alcohol dependency. It concludes with a series of recommendations for both public policy and research. Those which have proven their effectiveness are highlighted and must be integrated at the heart of a public health policy of harm reduction based on reducing alcohol consumption.

Abstract

"This unique work from acclaimed author Dr. Paul Marino (Marino's The ICU Book, The Little ICU Book) challenges the traditional notion that the human body thrives on oxygen, and that promoting tissue oxygenation is necessary for promoting life. This concept fails to recognize that oxygen is a destructive molecule that also damages the human body. Instead of welcoming oxygen, the human body limits exposure of the tissues to oxygen, and employs an army of chemical antioxidants to combat the damaging effects of oxygen. This "oxygen protective" human design represents a new paradigm for the relationship between oxygen and human survival, and it has important implications for the excessive and unregulated use of oxygen in clinical practice"--

Abstract

What happens phonetically in the production of stems in words such as days and daze? Do inflectional stems differ phonetically from monomorphemic words? Can these differences be perceived? This volume aims to answer these questions in a replication project by investigating data from two corpora and a production experiment, as well as by extending this research with two perception experiments. It investigates what happens phonetically in the stems of words that end in homophonous suffixes, and whether listeners can perceive these subtle phonetic differences. Two potential effects were termed; categorical paradigm uniformity, in which stems of words ending in [s, z] are expected to have longer durations if these words are morphologically complex (e.g. days is longer than daze), as well as gradient paradigm uniformity, in which the frequency of related words is expected to have an influence on paradigm members (e.g. day influences days). Findings from these studies contribute to a growing body of research in the field of morphophonetics.
